Prolific and widely known flutist, beloved in jazz circles, has covered many world music styles. Herbie Mann played a wide variety of music throughout his career. He became quite popular in the 1960s, but in the '70s became so immersed in pop and various types of world music that he seemed lost to jazz. However, Mann never lost his ability to improvise creatively as his later recordings attest.

Starting his career as a practitioner of cool jazz and bop, Herbie Mann was one of the first musicians to embrace world influences into his sound. Incorporating the rhythms and melodies of Cuba, Africa, and South America, as well as the Middle and Far East, into his work, Mann was also known for his high-profile collaborations, appearing alongside the likes of Art Blakey, Chet Baker, Sarah Vaughan and numerous others...

...Hamburg was the Beatles' baptism by fire. Playing grueling sessions for hours on end in one of the most notorious red-light districts in the world, the group was forced to expand its repertoire, tighten up its chops, and invest its show with enough manic energy to keep the rowdy crowds satisfied. When they returned to Liverpool at the end of 1960, the band -- formerly also-rans on the exploding Liverpudlian "beat" scene -- were suddenly the most exciting act on the local circuit. They consolidated their following in 1961 with constant gigging in the Merseyside area, most often at the legendary Cavern Club, the incubator of the Merseybeat sound...

The Beatles entered a recording studio for the first time 50 years ago, in 1961. It wasn’t actually the group’s gig, since they were essentially the backing band for singer Tony Sheridan, but the way recording was done at the session and at a second session in 1962, with instrumental parts laid down first and vocals added later, it’s possible to catch a faint, nascent glimpse of the international pop phenomenon the Beatles would become a couple years down the road. Orchestral big-band leader Bert Kaempfert had discovered the group playing in a German nightclub, signed them to a recording contract, paired them with Sheridan in the studio, and then released the songs through Polydor Records in Germany in 1961 and 1962. These early tracks have been released multiple times over the years in both mono and stereo mixes (with reverb added), and this set from Time Life Music includes both versions. Everything’s here, really, kind of frozen in time, since the original tapes were lost in a fire at Kaempfert's warehouse in the early '70s. Sheridan handles almost all of the vocals, and there are only two tracks without him, a version of John Lennon singing “Ain’t She Sweet” and an early George Harrison instrumental called “Cry for a Shadow,” both of which are featured here in mono, stereo, and medley versions.... Everything has a beginning. This two-disc set collects the earliest recordings of perhaps the most important recording act in pop music history. That’s the story, and the rest is history.

Chuck Berry's fifth Chess Records album, New Juke Box Hits, was recorded and released in the midst of the legal difficulties that would put him in jail the following year. That distraction seems to have kept him from composing top-flight material, while the attendant publicity adversely affected his record sales, such that the album contained no hits. The included single was "I'm Talking About You," later successfully recorded by the Rolling Stones, and the album also contained "The Thirteen Question Method" and "Don't You Lie to Me," worthy minor entries in the Berry canon. Elsewhere, Berry filled out the record covering others' hits -- Nat "King" Cole's "Route 66," B.B. King's "Sweet Sixteen," Little Richard's "Rip It Up." The result is a good rock & roll set, but not in the same league with Berry's earlier albums.

Ron Gallo spent close to a decade exploring the boundaries of his blues, country, and roots rock influences with his band Toy Soldiers, but when he jumped ship to go solo, he left all of that behind. At least that's the very strong impression given by Gallo's second solo album, 2017's Heavy Meta. Gallo's first solo effort, 2014's Ronny, was a step away from Toy Soldiers' sound into a brighter and poppier direction, but with Heavy Meta, he's done an about-face into raw, wiry, guitar-based rock & roll. Backed by bassist Joe Bisirri and drummer Dylan Sevey, Heavy Meta is a gritty, energetic exercise in punk-informed 21st century garage rock, with Gallo's buzzy, rough and ready guitar figures and high-attitude vocals front and center in the mix at all times...

The Salad Boys' 2015 debut album Metalmania was a fine update on classic jangle pop, full of ringing guitars, hooky melodies, and a mix of uptempo and more relaxed tunes. They don't deviate much from their winning formula on This Is Glue, the 2018 follow-up. Unlike the previous album, which was a more collaborative effort, this time the band's songwriter Joe Sampson took control. With drummer James Sullivan in tow, he recorded the album in various locales around his hometown of Christchurch and gets a much less polished sound than on Metalmania. This approach fixed one of the main problems that album had, which was how sleek and shiny it was. Jangle pop can easily come off as too polite if there isn't some grit under the chiming guitars, and This Is Glue has just enough scruff and lo-fi appeal to avoid this pitfall...

Alison Nicole Mosshart is an American singer, songwriter, artist, and the lead vocalist for the rock band the Kills and blues rock band the Dead Weather. She started her musical career in 1995 with the Florida punk rock band Discount which disbanded in 2000.

Perfume Genius - Set My Heart on Fire, Immediately / Describe
On Perfume Genius' previous albums, Mike Hadreas revealed so much of himself that it's difficult to imagine he'd have more to uncover. With Set My Heart on Fire, Immediately, however, he goes beyond baring his soul to exploring the power and tenderness of the body. Before making this record, Hadreas collaborated with choreographer Kate Wallich and her dance company the YC, not just writing the music for her piece The Sun Still Burns Here but performing in it as well. This collaborative, body-oriented way of making art had a profound impact on his fifth album. Set My Heart on Fire, Immediately is more theatrical and more direct than much of Perfume Genius' earlier work, and revels in the physicality of his music in inspired ways. The album's textures are almost tangible, particularly on "Describe"'s thick distortion and flowing slide guitars...

Everything Everything - Arch Enemy
UK art-rock band Everything Everything have announced Re-Animator, their first new album since 2017’s A Fever Dream. Recorded over the course of two weeks with producer-to-the-indie-rock-stars John Congleton, Re-Animator was in part inspired by frontman Jonathan Higgs’ fascination with psychologist Julian Jaynes’ theory of the bicameral mind.
“This idea of the divided self captivated me,” Higgs explains in a statement. “Jaynes attributes this to the origin of gods, people ascribing deity status to this voice they could hear in their head. All this blew my mind, and I started thinking of ways I could make this a central concept It really touched me. So across the whole record there are millions or references to this theory — to having a split brain, two selves, hearing voices.”

Moody, Brit-pop-influnced chamber rock from this Montreal collective led by enigmatic frontman Murray Lightburn.
The Dears - Lovers Rock / Instant Nightmare
One of the more compelling mysteries in indie rock is the relationship between Murray Lightburn and Natalia Yanchak of the Dears. Lightburn is the group's founder, leader, songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist, while Yanchak is their keyboard player. They've been working together since 1998 and have been married since 2005. The longevity would suggest they have a reasonably happy and functional relationship, but even the most cursory examination of the Dears' music makes it clear Lightburn takes an extremely dim view of romance and the world around him... At their best, the Dears make music so beautiful that you can sometimes forget how bitter and resigned they seem to be, and Lovers Rock works the "pretty music about ugly emotions" angle as effectively as anything they or their peers have done in ages.

Sparks - A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip / Left Out In The Cold
"Our inconsistency is our consistency/our insincerity is our sincerity," Russel Mael sings at one point on A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip. It's a sentiment that could pass for Sparks' manifesto: Over the years, fans have come to expect dizzyingly witty lyrics and dazzling, ever-changing sonics from the Mael brothers. Their 24th album offers plenty of both, as well as a more pointed outlook and a slightly more down-to-earth sound than the duo's last outing, 2017's Hippopotamus. Ron and Russel Mael give these songs about misfits, outliers, and disasters a driving urgency... the darkly cosmic "Nothing Travels Faster Than the Speed of Light," which provides a great showcase for Ron Mael's formidable keyboard skills...

British rap-punk duo with an aggressive, no-nonsense sound led by the blue-collar, ranting wordplay of Jason Williamson.
Sleaford Mods - All That Glue / Tweet Tweet Tweet
Since their breakthrough in the mid-2010s, Sleaford Mods have remained as prolific as they are angry. Along with releasing a slew of albums, they issued enough singles, EPs, and rarities to fill out their own ample compilation. All That Glue, a roughly chronological set of album tracks, B-sides, and more that spans seven years of the Mods' career, isn't a greatest hits or odds 'n' sods collection in the strictest sense of either, but it does speak to the consistency of Jason Williamson and Andrew Fearn's music. The better-known tracks here still brim with the fury and humor that propelled the duo out of obscurity...  "Tweet Tweet Tweet," taken from their other brilliant 2014 full-length Divide and Exit, remains one of the duo's most musical and relevant songs in its spooky evocation of social media paranoia and loathing...

This U.K. group makes shimmery noise pop that combines surf, punk, and garage rock inspirations.
Chemtrails - The Peculiar Smell of the Inevitable / Suck My Mind
Bandleader Mia Lust and co-singer/guitarist Laura Orlova are back with a new keyboardist and rhythm section for Chemtrails' second album, The Peculiar Smell of the Inevitable. It turns out not to be a cause of concern for fans, as the refreshed lineup continues to funnel the group's boisterous blend of vintage surf, garage rock, and proto-punk influences into compellingly glittery noise pop. Even more newsworthy than changes in membership is that over the course of the three EPs and the full-length that preceded it, the duo's songwriting has only gotten catchier. At the same time, Lust's snarling mix of complaints and shrug-emoji endurance of subjects both personal and societal bring just the right amount (a lot) of outsider attitude to their poppy tunes...

Hanni el Khatib - Flight / Peace
Hanni El Khatib hit a career high in terms of unfiltered creative expression with 2017's Savage Times, a sprawling set of disparate but highly entertaining cuts that when bundled together represented the final fruit of an experimental multi-volume EP project from the previous year. The Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist has come a long way from the raunchy guitar-and-drums rock & roll of his 2011 debut, branching out over subsequent years into veins of icy synth-rock, hip-hop, folk, post-punk, and whatever else seemed to catch his interest at the time... Loaded with brief tracks under the two-minute mark, Flight scoots along at a breezy and entertaining pace, with El Khatib sounding confident and spunky in his role as captain/emcee. Comparisons to Beck and the Beastie Boys are apt, but El Khatib -- a lifetime skate rat and designer with his own skateboard line -- brings his own personal West Coast stamp, and the traces of his more straightforward blues-stomp rock still rear their head now and again...

Philadelphia-based artist whose short, bright bedroom pop songs go in unpredictable directions.
ARTHUR - Hair of the Dog / Biz
Philly-based solo artist ARTHUR's fragmented pop visions were formed in part by constant exposure to video games and their 8-bit soundtracks while he was growing up. His 2018 debut album, Woof Woof, was a collection of short songs that flew by like succinct theme songs for imaginary late-night TV shows. Second album Hair of the Dog continues ARTHUR's proclivity for miniature pop composition, growing more demented, giddy, and cartoonish with each track. Even in its more reserved moments, Hair of the Dog is crowded with melodies and aggressive full-color arrangements. "Biz" ornaments its would-be mellow groove with blasts of pitch-shifted vocals, outbursts of distorted synths, and liquid vocal harmonies...

Low-key, earthy, Maxwell-approved singer and songwriter from D.C. who arrived with a pair of EPs in 2014.
Nick Hakim - Will This Make Me Good / Gods Dirty Work
...Hakim’s music occupies a realm between R&B and jam-band-adjacent rock — while he’s not big on long solos or other trademarks/stereotypes of the latter genre, there’s definitely an affinity in vibe. It’s often hazy, soft-lit and atmospheric, with slowed-down Parliament-Funkadelic-esque melodies, D’Angelo-ish multi-tracked vocals and flashes of Shuggie Otis. And he’s doubled down on the production, wafting even further out with woozy tempos, deep echo and effects that often evoke classic reggae dub music from the ‘70s and ‘80s...

Experimental collective from Brooklyn whose work blends abstract hip-hop, free jazz, lo-fi, and numerous other genres.
Standing on the Corner - Angel
Standing on the Corner are fastidious collagists at heart; the Brooklyn experimental ensemble stitches together far-flung samples, jazz instrumentation, and hip-hop beats into warped freeform suites. “Angel,” a punch-drunk interplanetary transmission anchored by a swooning, dazed vocal performance from the group’s architect Gio Escobar, is their first new single since 2017’s Red Burns. Over hollowed-out drum fills, scratchy, exuberant fanfare, and gently strummed electric guitar, the group tease out new vocal and brass tones and imbue them with dreamy lovesickness. The video elevates this astral-mindedness even further, casting musician and blaxploitation legend Melvin Van Peebles as an astronaut cruising through the cosmos. As he nears the darkness of the unknown at the end, Escobar’s vocals slow to a crawl and become increasingly mournful, pleading to “fly, fly, fly.” It’s an evocative low-lit ballad that induces a potent wave of melancholy and nostalgia.

Alison "VV" Mosshart is the vocalist of The Kills. Apart from her work in The Kills with Jamie "Hotel" Hince; Mosshart is one of the original members of the alternative rock band The Dead Weather, that formed in late 2008.

In all her years howling out front of such esteemed rock ‘n’ roll bands as the Kills and the Dead Weather, Alison Mosshart has never released music under her own name. That changes with today’s release of Mosshart’s debut solo single, “Rise.”
Mosshart began sketching out the idea for “Rise” back in 2013: “I didn’t ever forget it,” she says. “I remember right where I was when I wrote it, sitting at my desk in London, missing someone badly.” She didn’t finish the song until much more recently, when she was approached to contribute music to Sacred Lies: The Singing Bones, a TV show on FacebookWatch starring Juliette Lewis. The slow-burn blues-rock track is featured throughout the series; Jordan Alexander’s character Elsie sang it in Episode One, and the song prominently features in today’s season finale.

"Before Anything Happens"

Ghost Toast - Shape Without Form / Before Anything Happens
...A “Szellem(es) pirítós” előző albumáról anno megemlékeztem az oldal hasábjain és a friss opusz is hasonló szellemben fogant, mint az Out of this World. Tehát a srácok maradtak az instrumentális post/prog. rock vonalon, de talán a Shape Without Form lemezen kicsit több kemény, metalos téma/ megoldás bukkan föl, mint a korábbi korongokon. Továbbá most is megkapjuk, a lassan már Ghost Toast védjegynek számító összművészeti attitűdöt, irodalmi és filmes utalásokat. Már maga a lemezcím is egy T.S. Eliot vers (Az üresek – The Hollow Men) egyik sora...A Before Anything Happens-ben is varázsol a dob + a basszus. De a szinti sem pihen, néha be-befolyik egy-egy szordínós trombitára hajazó hangszín. És hát a masszív zongorafutamoknak is nehéz ellenállni. A 3:20 körül kezdődő témázgatás zseniális, itt újfent nagyon jól használják a sztereó hatást, Bence gitárja fölváltva szól az egyik, majd a másik fülünkben!...

Jazzekiel - Szép napok / Roszz hírek
Öt évvel a Másokat szeretni után érkezett meg a Jazzékiel új lemeze, a Szép napok. A köztes időben a  "debütáló" album, a Holy Shit tízéves jubileumi újrakiadásával, valamint kimaradt dalokkal enyhítették a várakozást. Cserébe mostantól sokáig lehet és kell is emészteni a nagy világégések előtt készült, boldog, mosolygós családi fotók által ihletett, a zenekar által vihar előtti csenddel jellemzett dalokat...  A Szép napok koncepciója pedig kiválóan rímel a jelen válságos időkre, még ha ezt Fürgéék jó eséllyel egyáltalán nem láthatták előre. Ez persze nem von le egy hajszálnyit sem az album értékéből, talán áldás is, átok is, de mindenképp megvan a “látnoki romantikája”.
Az előző két lemezhez hasonlóan a Szép napok is olyan, mint egy hagyma, hallgatjuk, újra és újra, bontogatjuk le a rétegeket...

Jazzbois - Jazzbois / Bois
Tavaly ősszel jelent meg a Jazzbois Jazzbois Goes Blunt című bemutatkozása, ami komoly nemzetközi visszhangot kapott (ajánlotta például az Okayplayer is). Most pedig itt a "hivatalos" debütálás, a Jazzbois című EP, amit a berlini Cosmic Compositions jelentetett meg vinylen is. Itt jött ki az Abase tavalyi nagylemeze is, azon is dobol Czirják Tamás, aki Molnár Bencével (Rhodes, szinti, MPC) vette fel az új EP-t, plusz vendégekkel. A kiadó ismertetője szerint a jazz és a broken beat a legmélyebb gyökerek, de emellett a hiphop, a diszkó és a funk hatása is érezhető az ötszámos anyagon...

Fran Palermo - Crocodile Juice Bar / Jeopardy
...Az albumot részben a frontember házi stúdiójában, részben a londoni Toe Rag Studiosban rögzítették, ahol a munkálatokban a Grammy-díjas Liam Watson segített a zenekarnak. Nála olyan együttesek fordultak már meg, mint a Tame Impala, a Temples, Wolf Alice, a Metronomy vagy éppen Jack White. Összesen 11 dal van az albumon, amelyek tematikailag érintik Párizst, a filmeket, a könyveket, a képzőművészetet, a saját bőrön megtapasztalt pánikrohamokat... A FOMO főcímdalát tavaly, fogorvostól hazafele menet kezdtem el dudolászni magamban, lezsibbasztott szájjal a nagykörúton. Hazaértem, és otthon el is kezdtem egy halandzsa verziót csinálni belőle, mert a dalszövegeket általában szeretem a végére hagyni. Hartung Attila filmrendező tinédzser botrányról szóló filmjéhez készült, és ez volt az egyetlen inspirációm hozzá. Hartung egyébként mondhatni produceri státuszban volt ebben a dalban, mert ő kérte, hogy legyen benne elektronikus zenei kiállás, és hogy a tempó mindenképp vérpezsdítő legyen. Ez a szám a fiatalon elkövetett tragédiák feldolgozásáról szól és arról, hogyan oldjuk meg, lépünk rajtuk túl vagy próbáljuk elfelejteni ezeket. Valamint felveti a kérdést, hogy az idő oldja-e meg a problémákat, vagy az, hogy ha teszünk érte valamit...

"Amikor a sok munkától kiürülök, akkor kell valami, ami laktató, de izgalmas, átmozgat, de azért az intellektusomat is leköti, és mindenekelőtt érző emberként hat rám. Legutóbb, nagyjából egy éve azon vettem magam észre, hogy nem találok ilyen lemezt. Éreztem, hogy valahol ott kell lennie a világban, de mégsem találtam. Ekkor kissé nagyképűen úgy döntöttem, hogy írok magamnak egyet! Ez lett az Octopus. Olyan ez, mint egy válogatáskazi, amit az ember a csajának csinál: ilyesmiket hallgatok, ez vagyok én" - A Subtonesban, mint Subicz mondja, úgy működnek a tagok, mint egy polip – innen az album címe. Subicz Gábor jazztrombitás-zeneszerző a fej, a többiek a karjai, Jónás Vera és Kiss Flóra énekel és dalt szerez, Benkő Dávid, Csókás Zsolt és Fonay Tibor építik fel a zenét, Csízi László és Szarvas Dávid a ritmus-vázt adják az egészhez, és végül Fenyvesi Márton a sound designer gyúrja egységgé a dalokat...

Isle of Man - Missing Places / Spectrum
Az Isle Of Man 2015-ben még Matos Gergely szólóprojektjeként mutatkozott be Magyarradar rovatunkban, aztán több közreműködő is megjelent a nagyívű posztrock és a kísérletező, ambientes elektronikus zene megoldásait egyaránt használó zenében, aminek fő erőssége az atmoszférateremtés. (Nem véletlenül volt a 2017-es lemez címe Atmosphere - ez nem mellesleg egyik kedvenc kiadványunk volt az évben.) Az Isle Of Man azóta teljes értékű trióvá lett, és ugyan az előbbi meghatározás továbbra is áll, az új EP-t premierező Phenom'enon-cikkben "a letisztulás és egységessé válás" dokumentumának nevezik a Missing Placest...

Képzelt Város - Samizdat / Unsound
Hosszas hallgatás után jelentkezett végre új lemezzel az egyik, ha nem a legjobb magyar posztrock zenekar, a Képzelt Város, ami a négy éve megjelent Köd után most ismét keblére ölelte a hosszabb, elszállósabb posztrock témákat, ennek pedig egy elég hipnotikus anyag lett a vége... "Rengeteg a buktató, de ha a végén sikerül egy kompromisszumok nélküli dolgot készíteni, az mindenképp jó érzés, különösen akkor, ha ez valahogy meg is találja a helyét és útját az emberekhez. A kompromisszumokkal való ilyen küzdelem sokunk életét végigkíséri más szempontokból is, nagyjából erről szól ez a lemez. Mi hoztuk létre, mi csináltunk rajta mindent, ami jó és mindent, ami rossz. Azt próbálja kifejezni, hogy mennyire nehéz a különféle zsúfolt, nyomasztó helyzetekkel és jelenségekkel megküzdeni mind fizikailag (nagy tömegek, növekvő népsűrűség és társaik), mind érzelmileg és szellemileg, azt hiszem ebben a világban, amiben élünk, talán mindenki harcol ezekkel valamelyest. Kezdetben nem vettük teljesen komolyan a zenei alapötletet, de végül sikerült úgy alakítanunk, hogy ma már kedvenceink közé tartozik a lemezről. Szerencsésen sikerült a tartalmát és formáját összekapcsolni...

Mordai - Mordái / Hidegen fújnak a szelek
...A Mordái zenekar közel egy éve alakult, amikor Nóvé a Népdalok című szólólemezéhez keresett zenekart. A szólólemez munkálataival végül megszületett a Mordái, illetve egy három számos lemez, ami egyben a 2018-as év megjelenései listánkra is rákerült....
"Kapusi Viktorral, Czitrom Ádámmal és Porteleki Áronnal játszottam korábban egy Morphine tribute esten, és a zenében sok átfedést éreztem. Nem beszélve arról, hogy a csapat nagyon jól működött. Később csatlakozott Vértesi Feri gitáron és Klausz Ádám dobokon. Eleinte még azokat a népdal-feldolgozásokat gyakoroltuk, amelyek a szólólemezemen találhatóak, majd később elkezdtünk közösen új számokat írni" - mesélte Nóvé...

Szesztay Dávid - Határtalan / Határtalan
Szesztay Dávid multiinstrumentalista zeneszerző három számos anyaga tovább folytatja a debütlemezzel megkezdett utat, még plasztikusabb, de ugyanolyan bensőséges hangszereléssel, a sodró intenzitástól a feszes repetíciókkal való játékig terjedő dramaturgiai ívvel... "A Határtalan pedig az állandó mozgást, utazást képviseli számomra ebben a sokszor hovatehetetlen és szürreális világban... Dalok bentre felvételeitől eltérően most akusztikus dob alapokat vettünk fel amiket természetesen a zenekari felállás dobosa Klausz Ádám játszott fel. A dobfelvételeket Fenyvesi Márton készítette a Sinistra stúdióban, a további hangszereket én játszottam fel és a keverést is én végeztem el a saját stúdiómban."

Black Nail Cabaret - Gods Verging on Sanity / No Gold
...Ennyi idő alatt sokat változott a BNC zenéje, más, mint az előző albumok – ám ez természetes. Ami változatlan, az a minőség iránti elkötelezettség. Abból nem adtak le. A Gods Verging of Sanity egy viszonylag visszafogott tempójú, erős album sötét és karakteres énekkel, modern hangzással, olykor már-már misztikusan és mágikusan drámai elektronikus hangszínekkel. Az a fajta lemez ez, amit elsősorban hallgatni jó, de táncolni sem tilos rá – van több olyan dal is rajta, mely ellenállhatatlanul megmozdítja a lábat...

Krúbi - Ösztönlény / Csekk
...Krúbi az az ösztönlény, aki a csöcsökről, pénzről és kokainról makogó tengerentúli rapperekhez hasonlóan nem tudta feldolgozni a hirtelen szerzett népszerűséget és anyagi jólétet, aki az összes csajt leszopatja a backstageben, és aki egész életében várta „ezt a rocksztár életet”, aki elvesz „egy fullos nőt, majd húsz év múlva még egyet”.
A Krúbi mögött álló előadó pedig az, akinek már eddig is volt egy metálzenekara, rappelni csak poénból kezdett a haverjainak és véletlenül befutott, azóta pedig az új számokon kívül a magánélete és a Krúbi-karakter között próbál balanszírozni....
