A Szép napok komor. Nem is mertem egyszerre sokat hallgatni, de nem is tudtam sokat nem hallgatni. A záró, címadó dal hangulata, jórészt a kórus miatt, olyan, mintha egy viharos történelmi film végén aláfestőzene lenne, amikor a halott főhős unokái lassan becsukják a családi fotóalbumot, the end, stáblista, viszlát. Aztán ott ülsz ezzel a kurvanagy űrrel, és akkor újraindítod a Szép napokat.

Savages (a Savages Y Suefóból) 2008-ban jelentette meg első szólóalbumát, egyben a magyar downtempo egyik kulcslemezét, a Five Finger Discountot, ami nemrég kijött bővített verzióban is (itt írtunk róla bővebben). 11 év után pedig itt a második szólólemez, a Life In The Wild Garden, ami az egészen pontos leírás szerint: "az első nyomdokait követi, megfűszerezve lusta boom bap beatekkel és sok környezeti felvétellel, amik személyesebbé teszik". Savages 2017-ben költözött Budapestről falura, mégpedig Érsekvadkertre - innen a címbeli wild garden -, és "a zajos és hangos fővárostól távoli környezet és életstílus" hatásáról nemcsak a kísérőszöveg ír, hanem tényleg hallható a zenén...

1991-2001

The Cape Verdean singer was the preeminent force of morna music, which combines fado, jazz, and Latin. A native of the island nation of Cape Verde, Cesária Évora was known as the country's foremost practitioner of the morna, which is strongly associated with the islands and combines West African percussion with Portuguese fados, Brazilian modhinas, and British sea shanties.
Mar Azul 3:38
Cabo Verde 3:14
from Mar Azul 1991
From Cesaria Evora's opening wail on Mar Azul's title track, one knows that this disc, a short set comprised of only eight songs, is going to be something special. This is the album that won Evora the praise of Paris, and was released prior to her international hit, Miss Perfumado. These are classic mornas at their most haunting -- all the songs are devastating, slow-burning, and stellar. The subject matter is about love, loss, and the heartbreak of life in Cape Verde. The music is acoustic, with guitars, sweeping pianos, and the occasional horn or violin to augment the effect. The liner notes set up the image of Evora ("Cize," as she is known to those close to her) as she prepares to sing in a smoky Cape Verdean nightclub. The overlying feel of this album is that of a dark and intimate seaside bar, under a starry sky, featuring a beloved singer who woos the audience with her dreamy, mesmerizing voice. Highlights include the haunting "Mar Azul," the elegantly moody "Cabo Verde,"... and its heartbreaking finale, "Separacao." This truly original and understated album burns with the underlying ferocity of an emotional roller coaster, and introduced to the world the mornas of Cape Verde and their most famous interpreter, Cesaria Evora.

Singer/songwriter Kiko Veneno was born in Figueres, Spain, and later settled in Sevilla making his live debut at a local university in 1971. After participating in a duet called Kiko y Germán, he joined brothers Rafael and Raimundo Amador to form Veneno, a flamenco/pop act that disbanded a year later. In 1981, Kiko Veneno made his first solo record, Seré Mecánico por Tí...
Lobo López 4:55
Echo de Menos 3:47
...A seminal but erratic artist, Veneno benefited here from the key support of Radio Futura's Santiago Auserón and producer Joe Dworniak, and was thus able to focus his talents for a set that included classics such as "Lobo López," "En un Mercedes Blanco," "Echo de Menos," and "Joselito."...

Listeners who learn the name of this band will in the process learn an old Hungarian proverb, meaning "the end of pains," and normally used to describe the situation when someone dies. Neither of the words is actually Hungarian -- "kampec" is Yiddish, "dolores" is Latin -- but the band itself has been the most successful touring Hungarian rock band since the collapse of the Soviet Eastern bloc in the mid-'60s.
Tű fokán 4:41

...For the following decade Kampec Dolores toured the entire European continent more than two dozen times. Musically the group started with the kind of new wave, post-punk styles that were prevalant in the '80s. The musicians worked with many different influences from ethnic music and avant-garde music including free improvisation. The vocalist Gabi Kenderesi developed her own style of scat singing, using made-up languages and extended vocal techniques. She is also a fine violinist...

At the forefront of the Rock en Español movement, the band mixes rock, punk, electronics, and the occasional traditional Mexican flavoring. The Mexican quartet has remained one of the biggest acts on the Latin music scene since, inspiring two generations of rockers in their wake...

from Re 1994
For Re, Café Tacuba experimented with different styles and sounds, resulting in one of the most wildly varied releases of the '90s... Re proves that Café Tacuba is lyrically and musically more adventurous than most of its '90s peers.
...The band employs a standard rock lineup of guitar/bass/drums with vocals, certainly, but the members also incorporate electronics as well as exotic instrumentation into their music, which encompasses styles as divergent as punk and ballads, as well as regional Mexican sounds like norteña, cumbia, ranchera, and even mariachi and electronica, indie pop, and garage rock. .. While critics look at these reasons to signify Café Tacuba's importance, legions of global music followers are enamored with them simply because of their music, which is broadly appealing not only because of its groundbreaking nature, but also because of it's fun, madcap, and ever-changing...

Brazilian singer and a founding member of Return to Forever. Her trademark is an adventurous improvisational fusion of Brazilian and American jazz.
Radio Experienca (Radio Experience) 4:47
Finale 3:54
from The Flight 1994
Influenced by both traditional Brazilian singers and the improvisations of American jazz divas like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, Flora Purim was one of the most adventurous singers of the 1970s. After meeting and marrying her husband, percussionist Airto Moreira, in their native Brazil, Purim moved with him to the U.S. in the late '60s. Though she worked with Stan Getz and pianist Duke Pearson before the decade ended, it wasn't until joining Chick Corea, Joe Farrell, Stanley Clarke, and Moreira in the original Return to Forever in 1972 that she became well known in the States.

An acclaimed, ever-evolving jazz bassist, Dave Holland is a gifted improvisor and composer whose work has touched on acoustic post-bop, avant-garde jazz, and fusion.

The Winding Way (Dave Holland) 11:57
Claressence (Dave Holland) 7:28
Dream of the Elders(Dave Holland) 11:07
Stylewise, the music on this CD sounds much closer to a mid-'60s Blue Note release than what one might expect from ECM. Although the general sound of the ensembles is light, the music is often filled with inner heat, a little reminiscent of a Wayne Shorter record. Altoist Eric Person and vibraphonist Steve Nelson work well together, bassist Dave Holland takes plenty of solo space, drummer Gene Jackson keeps the momentum flowing... Holland's originals have plenty of variety in moods while close attention is paid to dynamics. A satisfying and thought-provoking session.

A pioneer of soul-jazz who revolutionized the Hammond organ, turning it into one of the most incisive, dynamic jazz instruments of its time.

Slow Freight (Lupin Fein / Irving Mills / Buck Ram) 5:52
froim Angel Eyes 1996
A follow-up to the mostly heated performances of Damn!, this CD features organist Jimmy Smith sticking to ballads and slower material. There is a sextet rendition of "Stolen Moments" (with both Roy Hargrove and Nicholas Payton on trumpets); duets with both trumpeters, bassist Christian McBride, and guitarist Mark Whitfield; a trio; a quartet...

1988-1997

Swamp blues vocalist and harp-man of the 1950s and '60s who earned an impressively long revival beginning in the 1980s.
I'm a Man (Bo Diddley) 4:00
Alligator Shuffle(Leslie Johnson) 2:45
from Harp & Soul 1988
After a lengthy hiatus from the music business, Lester was in the midst of his comeback when he waxed this album for Alligator. The overall sound is redolent of those Louisiana swamp blues classics, but with a cannily updated contemporary edge that works well.

A fiery guitarist and talented songwriter who plays a unique blend of Memphis R&B, southwest blues, and urban funk.
I've Made Nights By Myself (Albert King) 2:36
Lucky Lou (Jody Williams) 3:21
from Georgia Blue 1988
A hard-rocking, high-voltage blues guitarist most often compared to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tinsley Ellis is hardly one of the legions of imitators that comparison might imply. Schooled in a variety of Southern musical styles as evidenced by his 1988 Alligator debut Georgia Blue (a label he has been signed to three different times) Ellis draws not only from fiery Vaughan-style blues-rock, but also Texas bluesmen like Freddie King and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, the soulful blues of B.B. King, the funky grit of Memphis soul, and numerous other electric bluesmen...

Iconic singer/songwriter and musical wanderer who rose to prominence during the '60s folk revival and changed the world of music.  Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-consciousness narratives...
Political World  (Bob Dylan) 3:48
Everything Is Broken (Bob Dylan) 3:13
from Oh Mercy 1989
Oh Mercy was hailed as a comeback, not just because it had songs noticeably more meaningful than anything Bob Dylan had recently released, but because Daniel Lanois' production gave it cohesion.

A Danish indie rock quartet who merge driving dance-rock with lush, brooding post-punk proclivities, Yung is led by singer and songwriter Mikkel Holm Silkjær.
Progress 3:54
Autobiograhy 4:02
from Ongoing Dispute 2021
Showcasing an angsty, unsettled indie rock with dark post-punk and heavier inclinations, Denmark's Yung made their international debut with A Youthful Dream in mid-2016. The quartet spent the next nearly five years preparing the follow-up, with bandleader and main songwriter Mikkel Holm Silkjær citing members' varied musical tastes as a challenge in finding the right balance of noise and tunefulness...

Canadian electro-rock outfit Holy Fuck play dance music without modern electronic equipment, instead preferring to use standard rock instrumentation as well as unconventional vintage devices and machines, synthesizers and unconventional instruments
Luxe feat. Alexis Taylor  6:10
San Sebastian 3.14
from Deleter 2020
Toronto electro-rock group Holy Fuck have managed to hone their junk shop aesthetic into a surprisingly coherent form of warped pop music... Like their previous albums, this one was born from impromptu jams and sketches at rehearsals and soundchecks. At this point in their career, the group's chemistry is so strong that the music seems to naturally flow from them, and they've never sounded this tight before. Having incorporated buried, distorted vocals into their last few releases, here they invite a few guests to give a bit more of a human touch to their machine rhythms...  Tipping closer to dance-pop than noise-rock, Deleter is one of Holy Fuck's most finely tuned albums, yet the band sound as spontaneous as ever.

Philly duo with a gnarled take on space rock that includes pulsing drum machines and galactic saxophone leads.

Dirt in My Mind’s Eye 4:31
A Whole New Jupiter 19:49
from Out of the Ether 2019
Even though Philly-based band the Writhing Squares is made up of just two people, they conjure enough layers of sonic sludge to sound not just like a large band on full power, but a wall of beautifully gnarled noise calling out from the depths of a black hole. Building on the clatter of decidedly primitive drum-machine rhythms, Daniel Provenzano's overdriven bass lines wobble and churn as his bandmate Kevin Nickles fills in any space with tentacular waves of saxophone, delay-drenched vocals and deep-fried electronics... Even at their most meandering, the Writhing Squares' dense and hulking sound belies its own considered design. Out of the Ether is the strongest chapter of their work to date and points towards even more interesting space explorations to come.

1983-1988

The mercurial music icon widely considered the original pop chameleon and figurehead for countless musical movements.
David Bowie
Modern Love  (David Bowie) 4:48
Let's Dance  (David Bowie) 7:37
Cat People (Putting out Fire)  (David Bowie / Giorgio Moroder) 5:09
from Let’s Dance 1983
After summing up his maverick tendencies on Scary Monsters, David Bowie aimed for the mainstream with Let's Dance. Hiring Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers as a co-producer, Bowie created a stylish, synthesized post-disco dance music that was equally informed by classic soul and the emerging new romantic subgenre of new wave, which was ironically heavily inspired by Bowie himself.

Briefly active in the mid-'80s, vintage R&B-inspired supergroup featuring Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck.
The Honeydrippers
Young Boy Blues (Doc Pomus / Phil Spector) 3:32
Rockin' at Midnight 5:59
Sea of Love (George Khoury) 3:03
from The Honeydrippers, Vol. 1 1984
...Plant always harbored deep, abiding love for early rock & roll, a fact that was often obscured by his restlessness, too, a side that he indulged on his first two post-Zep solo albums -- glistening, modern albums with a heavier debt to Robert Fripp than Little Richard. Two albums in, he switched tactics for the EP detour The Honeydrippers, Vol. 1, an unabashedly retro-rock project that hauled out five golden oldies from the pre-Beatles era and served them up authentically, or at least as authentic nostalgia... Some may find this kind of pastiche a bit distancing, even campy, but there's a genuine warmth in Plant's performance, and his ad-hoc group of Honeydrippers -- including Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page in uncredited cameos -- have a great time running through these handful of oldies, particularly "Rockin' at Midnight."...

Enigmatic, prolific singer/songwriter and author known for his genre-defying work and contrary personality.
Reynard the Fox (Julian Cope) 6:16
O King of Chaos (Julian Cope) 2:36
from Fried 1984
In contrast to the crisp, clean sound of World, Fried often sounds rougher, a bit more shut in. Combine that with Cope's generally successful attempts to project an image of barely stable sanity, helped in large part by the notorious wearing-nothing-but-a-turtle-shell cover photos, and the idea of Fried as his album of crazed musical collapse understandably is a strong one. However, World producer Steve Lovell once again handles things here, along with playing guitar, while even more importantly, key Cope collaborator Donald Ross Skinner, a young musician from Cope's hometown, makes his debut. Kate St. John again contributes cor anglais throughout, adding a haunting atmosphere on many cuts. If anything, the album shows that Cope may be completely musical tripping out as he chooses but he knows exactly what he's doing throughout...
