Bristol collective whose combination of dark rhythms, reverb-laden guitars, and atmospheric samples helped pioneer the sound of trip-hop.
Daydreaming  (W. Badarou / Robert del Naja) 4:14
Be Thankful for What You've Got 4:09
Five Man Army (Robert del Naja) 6:04
Unfinished Sympathy  (Robert del Naja) 5:08
from Blue Lines 1991
The first masterpiece of what was only termed trip-hop much later, Blue Lines filtered American hip-hop through the lens of British club culture, a stylish, nocturnal sense of scene that encompassed music from rare groove to dub to dance. The album balances dark, diva-led club jams along the lines of Soul II Soul with some of the best British rap (vocals and production) heard up to that point, occasionally on the same track... Flaunting both their range and their tremendously evocative productions, Massive Attack recorded one of the best dance albums of all time.

Anarchic, experimental, and whimsical ensemble originally led by guitarist Daevid Allen, a founding member of the Soft Machine.

from Shapeshifter 1992
For their first album of new material in over 20 years, the real Gong (i.e., one led by Daevid Allen and containing a number of players from the classic '60s-'70s period) offer -- well, much of what made them so popular in the first place. There's an impish sense of humor to the lyrics, Gilli Smyth's deeply echoing space whisper, stunning sax and flute work from the criminally underrated Didier Malherbe, and plenty of trademark glissando guitar from Allen himself. Goddesses are invoked, gnomes are mentioned, and rhubarb is eaten, among many other things. Guitarist Steffi Sharpstrings fills what was Steve Hillage's role with plenty of post-punk energy, but really it all revolves around Allen's personality and some stunning music. Time's been kind to Gong. Their pioneering space rock ways found a home with the ambient crowd and their music shows they've listened to what's gone on and incorporated it into their sonic journey, which is part prog rock, part jazz, and part just out there...
Daevid Allen

Theatrical leader of '70s-era Genesis and a bona fide pop star by the '80s despite his experimental, often exotic, material. As the leader of Genesis in the early '70s, Peter Gabriel helped move progressive rock to new levels of theatricality. He was no less ambitious as a solo artist, but he was more subtle in his methods. With his eponymous debut solo album in 1977, he explored dark, cerebral territory, incorporating avant-garde, electronic, and worldbeat influences into his music.

Peter Gabriel
Come Talk to Me (Peter Gabriel) 7:05
Only Us (Peter Gabriel) 6:32
Digging in the Dirt (Peter Gabriel) 5:18
Kiss That Frog (Peter Gabriel) 5:19
from Us 1992
Six years after earning his first blockbuster, Peter Gabriel finally delivered Us, his sequel to So. Clearly, that great span of time indicates that Gabriel was obsessive in crafting the album, and Us bears the sound of endless hours in the studio... Since the music is so muted, it's no surprise that the album failed to capture a mass audience the way So did, but it's foolish to expect anyone but serious fans to unravel an album this deliberate. Gabriel is as adventurous as ever, yet he is relentlessly sober about his experiments, burying exotic sounds and percussion underneath crawling tempos measured atmospherics -- this is tastefully two-toned music, assembled by a consummate craftsman who became too immersed in detail to make anything but an insular, introspective work... But it takes a lot of spins and patience to get to that point, since this is an album he made for himself, and only those dedicated to the artist will have the patience to decode it.

Adamis Anna

A hetvenes-nyolcvanas évek egyik legjelentősebb magyar rockzenekara. Nevük akkoriban egyet jelentett a minőséggel.

A Locomotiv GT-t 1971-ben alapította Barta Tamás (1948–1982, gitár), Frenreisz Károly (1946–, basszusgitár, szaxofon), Laux József (1943–2016, dob) és Presser Gábor (1948–, billentyűsök, ének). Az új supergroup az első nyilvános koncertjét 1971. június 28-án a Budai Parkszínpadon adta. Bár kezdetben a Magyar Hanglemezgyártó Vállalat vezetői – legalábbis a visszaemlékezések szerint – nem különösebben lelkesedtek az Omega, a Metro és a Hungaria zenekarokból érkezett muzsikusok újszerű, rhythm and blues alapú rockzenéje iránt („Nincsenek olyan számok, mint a Trombitás Frédi vagy a Citromízű banán?” – kérdezgették állítólag tőlük), a külföldi sikerek hatására engedték őket dolgozni.

Első albumuk (LOCOMOTIV GT, 1971) igazi progresszív rockzene, erőteljes hangszeres improvizációkkal. A szakmát lenyűgözte, a nagyközönségnek azonban túl merész volt, ezért ettől kezdve – amerikai mintára – következetesen mást vettek lemezre és mást játszottak a koncerteken.

1998-2007

London bassist who brought the funk and dub to Public Image Ltd. before going on to a collaboration-heavy solo career within world music. Jah Wobble is one of the genuine polymaths to emerge from the British post-punk scene of the late 1970s. He is a virtuoso bassist, composer, producer, journalist, poet and author. As a musician, his dub-heavy style weds reggae, jazz, funk, punk, and numerous global folk traditions (from Celtic to Asian music and more)...
Mehmeda Majka Bubage 3:10
St. Mary-Le-Bow 4:04
Mount Zion 12:10
from Umbra Sumus 1998
The strange, spiritual album that is Umbra Sumus is one of the more interesting items released in 1998. Bassist and composer Jah Wobble creates strangely compelling soundscapes that draw textures from a variety of ethnic traditions without explicitly evoking any one of them. .. At times, Jah Wobble's music verges on art-jazz, at times electronica with melodic sound effects, and at times it is in territory that doesn't have a name because nobody else sounds quite like this. Whatever you call this music, it is interesting throughout. .. The name of this album translates as "We Are Shadows," but many listeners will find that this music sheds welcome light on the possibilities of musical fusion.

This talented African guitarist's technique has often been compared to Delta blues legend Robert Johnson. One of the most internationally successful West African musicians of the '90s, Ali Farka Touré was described as "the African John Lee Hooker" so many times that it probably began to grate on both Touré's and Hooker's nerves. There is a lot of truth to the comparison, however, and it isn't exactly an insult...
Ali's Here (Ali Farka Touré) 3:13
Saukare (Ali Farka Touré) 2:51
Instumental (Ali Farka Touré) 4:13
from Niafunké 1999
Malian guitarist Ali Farka Toure's music has always managed global travel with ease and musical grace, shrinking the miles between Western Africa and the Mississippi Delta and seemingly visiting every city in between. Toure has received his share of accolades for blurring the lines between his contemporary/traditional fingerpicking style and "country blues."... He establishes a firm aesthetic residence on Niafunké, his first and most welcome CD in five years. Niafunké was recorded using a state-of-the-art portable studio in Toure's home village of Niafunke, which clearly lends a decisive authentic flavor and sense of musical place to the disc. Each tune is a lithe and resonant labyrinth of call-and-response patterns: a fingerpicked guitar speaks to a one-stringed njarka fiddle, calabash pummelings weave into those of the conga drums, and a lively small chorus answers Toure's authoritative lead vocals. A couple of the best cuts include "Ali's Here" and "Saukare." A beautifully rendered and intoxicating record.

A Mexican-American Laurie Anderson or if Frida Kahlo were a musician instead of a visual artist. Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Lila Downs is among the most globally popular singers of Latin music. One reason is that despite long established roots in Mexico and the United States, her cultural vision is anthropological. Hers is informed by ancient and earthy cultures both from her native Oaxaca -- boleros, rancheras, and mariachis -- and U.S. with its jazz, blues, and soul standards. Her own songwriting topics reflect themes of political and social justice, immigration, transformation, and environmentalism, all rooted in the human condition.
Nueve Viento (Paul Cohen / Lila Downs) 4:46
Luna (Paul Cohen / Lila Downs) 3:38
La Iguana 3:05
from Tree Of Life 2000
Downs' remarkable voice has been compared to both Cesaria Evora and Susana Baca, combining operatic training and jazz chops, while maintaining her Mixtec Indian heritage and incorporating music from many different Latin cultures. Inquisitive fans of worldbeat music will want to investigate Tree of Life.

Grażyna Auguścik is a Polish jazz vocalist, composer, and arranger. She frequently uses Polish folk music, Latin American music, and klezmer music.
Grażyna Auguścik
The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress (Jimmy Webb) 5:10
Dancing All Around (Grazyna Auguscik) 4:07
from River 2001
Her voice has a distinctive sound and style, and her choice of tunes spans genres, so it is not surprising that Polish-born vocalist Grazyna Auguscik has made a bit of a name for herself in the active Chicago jazz scene. Like contemporary Patricia Barber, another word sculptor from the Windy City, Auguscik defies pigeonholing, and as with Barber, her voice emanates a dark, brooding quality that is quite unlike any other. Ultimately, Auguscik's sound will not appeal to everyone, with its slightly off-beat qualities and odd harmonies. One thing in her favor: a compatible band, with first-rate performers such as accordionist Jarek Bester, who solos beautifully on "Bachianas Brasileiras," and local mainstays bassist Eric Hochberg and guitarist John McLean. .. She leaps across intervals, repeats phrases, and puts her entire self into her songs. The results sometimes charm and more often challenge, auguring well for the future of jazz singing. She points in an uncharted direction that takes nothing for granted, as little sounds mix with soft subtlety and poetic lyrics to achieve something just different enough to raise a few eyebrows.

Having graduated as an architect from the Technical University Budapest (BME), and as guitarist from the Jazz Faculty of the Béla Bartók Conservatory, he started to play in leading Hungarian jazz bands. He founded his own band, the group „Kaszakő” in 1975, which had a really original sound. Their first record was published under the title Édenkert (Garden of Eden) in 1983. He formed the group „Things” with sax player Tony Lakatos in 1985, which functioned for a period of seven years.

I have been blessed to meet and play with Attila László and his music for over ten years. Attila László's music is so wonderful in so many ways, I always hear a very broad span of musical influences coming from his playing and music so much, that I stopped trying to figure it out, I just enjoy it and always be alert and ready for what comes next. Every time I play a concert with him, I can expect the music to live within me, and it does. Which is what we have become, "Brothers". - Tommy Campbell
Attila László - electric and acoustic guitars, Kálmán Oláh - piano, keyboards, Béla Lattman - electric and acoustic bass, Kornél Horváth - percussions, Péter Szendőfi - drums

Jaco Pastorius
was a meteor who blazed on to the scene in the 1970s, only to flame out tragically in the 1980s. With a brilliantly fleet technique and fertile melodic imagination, Pastorius made his fretless electric bass leap out from the depths of the rhythm section into the front line with fluid machine-gun-like passages that demanded attention.

Teen Town - Victor Wooten (Jaco Pastorius) 4:10
Punk Jazz - Richard Bona (Jaco Pastorius) 5:03
Killing Me Softly -  Jeff Carswell (Pee Wee Ellis / Charles Fox / Norman Gimbel / Jaco Pastorius) 4:22
Back before he turned everyone's idea of bass playing inside out, Jaco Pastorius spent five years on the bandstand with the Peter Graves Orchestra at Bachelors III, a swanky spot in his hometown of Ft. Lauderdale. Nearly three decades after the future star's departure in 1975, and 16 years after his brutal murder, Graves got the guys back together, christened them in their former colleague's name, and invited the most prominent bass guitarists of the early 21st century down to join them in a project dedicated to Pastorius' legacy. Throughout these polished performances, the bass parts testify to how profoundly Pastorius altered that instrument's role. Bottom line (so to speak): he gave them the option of playing from a soloist mentality and blowing all over the beat, as fast and free as any saxophonist, as long as he or she had chops and didn't subvert the groove. The guest bassists on this collection absorbed this lesson long ago. Each can scatter quick licks, some of them even faster than Pastorius himself...

One of the Midwest's leading blues and soul divas; has also worked with Bob Seger, Kid Rock, and Big Chief.
Try to Remember (Mike Danner / Thornetta Davis / Phil Dürr / Matt O'Brien / Al Sutton) 4:13
Cry (Mike Danner / Thornetta Davis / Phil Dürr / Matt O'Brien / Al Sutton) 4:11
The Deal (Mike Danner / Phil Dürr / Matt O'Brien / Eric Oblander) 3:44
Working with her previous employers from Big Chief, specifically bassist Matt O'Brien, guitarist Phil Durr, and drummer Mike Danner, turned out to be the perfect approach for Thornetta Davis' solo debut. It's not quite Big Chief with a different lead singer, happily, with Sunday Morning Music showcasing her affinity for the blues while not losing the powerful punch of that band. Davis' singing is just wonderful -- she's got a rich, warm voice that she doesn't show off with, avoiding pointless vocal high jumps and wails for confident, often soaring delivery... Black Crowes member Eddie Harsch also adds keys and clavinet at various points, easily slotting into the band's smoky sound. Through it all, Davis sounds on top of her game, and the whole album makes for a worthwhile, invigorating listen.

Chicago guitarist Jimmy Johnson didn't release his first full domestic album until he was 50 years old. He's determinedly made up for lost time ever since, establishing himself as one of the Windy City's premier blues artists with a twisting, unpredictable guitar style and a soaring, soul-dripping vocal delivery that stand out from the pack.
Jimmy Johnson
Black and White Wall (Jimmy Johnson) 3:59
My Ring (Jimmy Johnson) 4:19
Jockey (Jimmy Johnson) 5:40
from I'm A Jockey 1995
It shouldn't have taken Johnson a full decade to find his way back into a studio, but such are the injustices of the record business. The wait was worth it, though -- backed by his touring trio of the timeframe, Johnson mixes blues and soul, originals (a heartfelt "Black & White Wall" and the soaring ballad "My Ring") and covers (his takes on McKinley Mitchell's "End of a Rainbow" and Wilson Pickett's "Engine Number 9" hit home), in decidedly solid contemporary form.

Contemporary blues star known for his passionate, fiery guitar playing and powerful vocals.
Tommy Castro
Can't Keep a Good Man Down (Tommy Castro) 4:00
Suitcase Full of Blues (Steve Schuffert) 4:10
Hycodan (Keith Crossan) 4:31
There's a clean San Francisco sheen to Tommy Castro's second album for Blind Pig, and it's not just the glossy production work of Jim Gaines (Santana, Huey Lewis and Stevie Ray Vaughan) that's responsible for it. Castro and his band have long been local favorites of the Bay area bar crowd, and his blues-rock/soul-pop synthesis with the occasional slow blues thrown in makes him another young contender for the yuppie throne of modern bluesdom..

Phil Guy
didn't eclipse his older brother Buddy's status as a blues superstar, and in reality, Phil's funky brand of blues was not captured correctly for posterity. But he remained an active attraction on the Chicago circuit, following in his sibling's footsteps and patiently waiting for his own star to rise up until his death.

Going Back to Louisiana (Lurrie Bell) - Phil Guy feat: Lurrie Bell 4:38
Lurrie Bell was born on December 13, 1958, in Chicago. His famous father, harpist Carey Bell, had him working out on guitar as a wee lad. By 1977, he was recording with his dad and playing behind a variety of established stars, tabbed by many observers at the time as a sure star on the rise.
Phil Guy and Lurrie Bell

New York singer/songwriter and guitarist at the forefront of the 1990s country-blues revival. Like Josh White, Jr. -- son of folksinger Josh White -- singer, songwriter, and guitarist Eric Bibb was raised in the folk tradition, the son of folksinger Leon Bibb. Bibb's uncle was the world-famous jazz pianist and composer John Lewis, part of the Modern Jazz Quartet.

Needed Time )Traditional) 5:17
Woke Up This Mornin' (B.B. King / Jules Taub / Traditional) 4:22
Braggin' (Eric Bibb / Göran Wennerbrandt) 3:02
Eric Bibb grew up in New York City, surrounded by a plethora of cultural variety from Leadbelly to Villa-Lobos wafting in from the radio and the streets. By the time little Bibb got his first guitar, his father, the eminent Leon Bibb, was making the rounds as a respected folk singer. Leon removed Eric from school in favor of packing him along to rehearsals, where he consorted with the likes of Judy Collins, Odetta, Bob Dylan, Earl Robinson and many others. Spirit and the Blues is a funky folk-blues delight: a bubbling pot of authentic bottleneck spirituals and memorable hum-alongs, especially for hardcore Deacons fans. Bibb blends the muddy-river vocal style of Delta gospel and the drive of white vagabond balladeers like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger... A modern and beautifully mixed record, graced with spirit and a real timelessness factor.

Contender for the title of greatest blues guitarist ever, with a fiery, screechy, super-quick technique that influenced countless followers. Buddy Guy is one of the most celebrated blues guitarists of his generation (arguably the most celebrated), possessing a sound and style that embodies the traditions of classic Chicago blues while also embracing the fire and flash of rock & roll.

She Got the Devil in Her (CeDell Davis) 5:10
from Sweet Tea 2001
...So, after a bit of a break, Guy returned in 2001 with Sweet Tea, an utter anomaly in his catalog. Recorded at the studio of the same name in deep Mississippi, this is a bold attempt to make a raw, pure blues album -- little reliance on familiar covers or bands, no crossover material, lots of extended jamming and spare production. That's not to say that it's without its gimmicks. In a sense, the very idea behind this record is a little gimmicky -- let's get Buddy back to the basics -- even if it's a welcome one, but that's not the problem... This may not showcase the showmanship of the artist live, the way Damn Right did, but it does something equally noteworthy -- it illustrates that the master bluesman still can sound vital and can still surprise.

Before he was old enough to legally take a drink, Tommy Bankhead was playing the blues with a long list of legendary musicians that included Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, Sonny Boy Williamson, Joe Willie Wilkins, Robert Nighthawk, and Joe Hill Louis.

I'm Not Your Alley Cat (Tommy Bankhead) 4:22
Please Accept My Love (Tommy Bankhead) 4:13
Everything Gonna Be Alright (Little Walter) 4:08
He started in his teens and for half a century remained a high-caliber bluesman. A Mississippi native, he settled in St. Louis at the end of the '40s. Bankhead made a name for himself with his guitar, but he also possessed refined skill on the bass, drums, and harmonica.

Free jazz has not produced many notable guitarists. Experimental musicians drawn to the guitar have had few jazz role models; consequently, they've typically looked to rock-based players for inspiration. James "Blood" Ulmer is one of the few exceptions: an outside guitarist who has forged a style based largely on the traditions of African-American vernacular music.
Rodolphe Burger is a French experimental rock icon whose most notable achievements include a two-decade tenure as the singer/guitarist of Kat Onoma, plus acclaimed solo albums and a wide range of collaborations. Born on November 26, 1957, in Colmar, Haut-Rhin, France, he first garnered musical fame in the experimental rock band Kat Onoma.

Hendrix meets the Velvet Underground is the best way to describe this amazing release. Blood is of course James Blood Ulmer who had avoided for decades to fulfill the promise to continue where Hendrix has ended it with the Band of Gypsies although many saw him as legitimate heir. Burger is the French singer and guitarist Rodolphe Burger, formerly leader of Kat Onoma and rooted in the Velvet Underground sound of White Light White Heat...

Award-winning blues singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer who rose to prominence in the 1980s. It took Joe Louis Walker a while to establish himself as a force of his own -- nearly 20 years, to be precise -- but once he released his debut, Cold Is the Night, in 1986, he quickly became a staple in contemporary blues.
Do You Love Me? (Joe Louis Walker) 5:22
New Direction (Joe Louis Walker) 6:43
Messed My Mind Up (Joe Louis Walker) 6:58
from New Direction 2004
Joe Louis Walker is quite the triple threat. Not only is he a superb blues guitarist, with remarkable fluency and imagination, he's also an excellent singer (as you might expect from someone who came up through gospel groups), and an excellent writer with a strong penchant for soul music...  With "Soldier for Jesus" his blues mixes with gospel, and some wonderful guitar work. With a small band -- bass, drums keys -- that truly swings, he keeps center stage, which is what he needs... A superb record from someone who might just be the best contemporary bluesman.
