Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever

weekly favtraX
29-12-2018

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - An Air Conditioned Man 4:51
Coming from Melbourne, air conditioning is presumably a very present concern for Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever. The band’s finely interlocking indie-pop grooves recall the old school underground rock of their Australian homeland and even more of their global neighbors in New Zealand. “An Air Conditioned Man” is very much part of that lineage, toggling between gorgeous guitar reveries and revved-up, krautrock, influenced rhythmic zone-outs.

DISQ - Communication 5:37
Disq are Isaac De Broux-Slone and Raina Bock, two extremely cool teenagers from Wisconsin who make neat, smart, Midwestern power-pop. The pair — who count Weezer, Big Star, Todd Rundgren and the Beatles as influences — released their first album in high school... It’s an upbeat, chunky rocker that starts out plucky and trill but upticks into a clashing, reverb-drenched 21st century suburban breakdown... It’s an existential track, full of blunt expressions of adolescent lostness, darker than the bright melody and sometimes beachy guitars signal (“I feel busy/ I don’t know where to go/ Who do I know?/ I am not very sure”). Such passages skewer the nonstop communication that can sometimes just make us feel even more alone (“Looking below/ People aren’t very pure/ And again communication/ Takes me farther away”).

Bristletongue - daisy chain 5:10
Bristletongue are a four-piece from Illinois fronted by L Morgan, whose aureate poetics bolster the group’s expansive compositions, which lie along the emo to post-rock spectrum. True to its title, the four songs on their debut EP, Femme Florale, are fixated on flower imagery, whether withering or blossoming or dying on the vine. It’s a thematic through-line that pays off well and matches the band’s music, with its many tendrils tied back to the singular root that is L Morgan’s impressive voice...

Lana Del Rey - Mariners Apartment Complex 4:06
Lana Del Rey has released a new song called “Mariners Apartment Complex.” It’s a collaboration with Jack Antonoff... Del Rey started teasing their team-up earlier this year via a few sly Instagrams and earlier this month she offered up a preview of the song. It’s the first of two new songs that Del Rey plans on releasing this month — another one, called “Venice Bitch,”
During an interview with Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1, Del Rey said that she was working on a book of poetry that she plans to self-publish.

Pistol Annies - Got My Name Changed Back 2:54
Lambert is one third of the country supergroup Pistol Annies, alongside Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley... “Got My Name Changed Back” is a giddy, exultant song about a breakup, and old-school pop-country snarl of the highest order.

Boygenius - Stay Down 4:00
Back in August, Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and Phoebe Bridgers, three of indie rock’s youngest and most exciting songwriters, formed the supergroup Boygenius... Recorded over four days at Los Angeles’ Sound City Studios in June, boygenius is beautiful, moving with the vulnerability of youth. Each track remains rooted in one distinctive voice...

The Voidz - ALieNNatioN 4:39
“ALieNNatioN” has a truly horrible title, owing specifically to its liberal abuse of upper- and lower-case letters, and I went into the album expecting to hate the thing. Instead, it’s probably my favorite track on Virtue, and in many ways, the most straight-up gorgeous song ever recorded by Julian Casablancas. Compositionally, it kinda sounds like Pinback: that crisp architectural melody over the reggae-ish rhythm; the shift into dizzying angelic beauty on the chorus. But sonically, it could be a Metro Boomin’ production: the vast echo; the hard, sparse beat. It rules.

Thom Yorke - Suspirium 3:21
Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino will release his remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 cult horror classic Suspiria. Even though the film itself might be doing too much, its Thom Yorke-scored soundtrack is still something to be excited about — as well as the fact that the Radiohead frontman and his absolute look-alike Tilda Swinton finally get to be involved in the same project.

Open Mike Eagle - Relatable (peak OME) 3:05
The Los Angeles underground rap veteran has just shared a new song called “Relatable (peak OME),” the first taste of his upcoming project What Happens When I Try to Relax... “When I get nervous, say something relatable/ I’m hella relatable,” Open Mike Eagle raps on “Relatable (peak OME).” “It’s too complicated for a quick explanation,” he explains in a statement. “It’s about a lot of things. It’s about expectations of form, anxiety, middle age and middle class. and that’s just the parts I know how to put into words a couple months after writing it.”

Forth Wanderers - Nevermine 3:54
Album opener “Nevermine” is built around spindly guitar interplay that expands into a huge, glorious chorus, almost like the New Jersey combo’s instruments are constructing the foundation for a towering monument. It certainly sounds monumental, anyway, without being too showy about it.
Ava Trilling’s first words seem to be addressing an ex: “I am the one you think of when you’re with her, and what do you have? Nothing on me.” She continues from there with a drowsy detachment in her delivery that belies the intensity of the narrative.

Pllush - Big Train 3:51
Everything about Pllush’s debut album sounds massive. Take “Big Train,” the third single from Stranger To The Pain and, to my ears, one of the best things that the San Francisco band has ever done. That chorus is just so good, the kind of perfectly logical rush that still feels entirely unexpected at the same time. “Who’s gonna love me more/ When I’m crying in the middle of the night?” Karli Helm sings, each word slotting into place like a puzzle piece. “Lately I’m feeling torn/ ‘Cuz nothing ever comes out right.” The song tendrils out from that first hit, Helm’s voice gruff and reactive, as a chorus of singers builds in the background to a magnificent and booming conclusion.
The song’s about learning to love yourself before anyone else, realizing that you can’t reciprocate what you don’t have. It’s about the independence that comes with being on your own, the fight to stand on your own two feet without breaking down.

Mary Lattimore - It Feels Like Floating 11:31
...from harpist Mary Lattimore. The song finds its drifting, airborne effect over the course of 11 minutes. Lattimore wrote this album during her stay at a seaside Northern California artist colony called Headlands Center for the Arts last summer, setting up shop in a barn with her 47-string harp by day and commingling with her fellow artists by night. With that knowledge in hand, the song’s ambient sprawl is definitely giving me mental pictures of fog rising over the redwoods.
Here’s some more context for you: Lattimore plays placid music with a deeply traditional instrument, but she’s also going on tour with Iceage this year...

Significant player in the development of the tenor saxophone, deeply rooted in the swinging south-west. One of the greatest of all tenor players, Don Byas' decision to move permanently to Europe in 1946 resulted in him being vastly underrated in jazz history books. His knowledge of chords rivalled Coleman Hawkins, and, due to their similarity in tones, Byas can be considered an extension of the elder tenor.
Don Byas
Worried 'N Blue (Don Byas) 3:15
Bass C Jam (Don Byas) 2:53
form Don Byas 1944 - 1945
Don Byas was one of the great tenor saxophonists of the 1940s, a Coleman Hawkins-influenced improviser who developed a complex style of his own. His permanent move to Europe in 1946 cut short any chance he had of fame, but Byas recorded many worthy performances during the two years before his departure. On Classics' first Don Byas CD (which contains his first 21 numbers as a leader), Byas matches wits and power with trumpeter Charlie Shavers on two heated sessions that include pianist Clyde Hart and bassist Slam Stewart...

Jazz giant who changed the face of the entire form, practically inventing modern jazz and shaping the course of 20th century music. One of a handful of musicians who can be said to have permanently changed jazz, Charlie Parker was arguably the greatest saxophonist of all time. He could play remarkably fast lines that, if slowed down to half speed, would reveal that every note made sense. "Bird," along with his contemporaries Dizzy Gillespie and Bud Powell, is considered a founder of bebop; in reality he was an intuitive player who simply was expressing himself.
Charlie Parker

Congo Blues (Red Norvo) 3:48
Now's the Time (Charlie Parker) 3:15
from Charlie Parker 1944-1946 (Jazz Archives No. 98)
This import roundup of some of Parker's key Savoy and Dial sides makes for a fine cross-label introduction to the bebop legend's '40s stretch. The 20-track set takes in bop classics like "Ko-Ko," "Yardbird Suite," "Now's the Time," and "Billie's Bounce," among many others. Throughout, Parker shows the myriad ways he could contort the medium he helped invent, and that's not to forget the sheer dynamism and emotional breadth he delivers, too. And helping along the way, Bird is joined by most of the A-list bebop players of the day, including Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon, Dodo Marmarosa, Max Roach, and Howard McGhee. History on a disc.

During the 1930s through the 1950s, he fused influences of the past--including jazz and swing--and pioneered a harder, funkier style of blues. Modern electric blues guitar can be traced directly back to this Texas-born pioneer, who began amplifying his sumptuous lead lines for public consumption circa 1940 and thus initiated a revolution so total that its tremors are still being felt today.
T-Bone Walker
I Know Your Wig Is Gone (T-Bone Walker) 2:45
Call It Stormy Monday But Tuesday Is Just as Bad (T-Bone Walker) 3:02

Description Blues (John Henty) 3:00
from T-Bone Walker 1947 Blues & Rhythm Series
Volume two in the complete recordings of T-Bone Walker as reissued on the Classics Chronological Series is loaded up with two dozen fine West Coast blues recordings cut for the Black & White, Capitol, and Comet labels over the span of exactly two months' time, from September 13 to November 13, 1947. Billed only as "T-Bone Walker & His Guitar," the group responsible for the fine music captured on this compilation consisted of various session men from all over the musical map. Teddy Buckner, George Orendorff, and Bumps Myers were all seasoned jazz players whose professional careers had taproots reaching back to the '20s and '30s. Oscar Lee Bradley was one of the most sought-after drummers in the business. The band provides excellent backing for T-Bone's smoky voice and irresistible electric guitar. The general sensation throughout is one of relaxed dignity and poignant truthfulness. Listeners are advised to beware of T-Bone Walker. Exercise caution! This man's music might grow on you. A full-blown dependence may develop, requiring the purchase of every volume in the complete chronological recordings of T-Bone Walker.

weekly favtraX

The Raconteurs - Now That You're Gone  3:39
It’s finally happening! The last time we heard from the Raconteurs, they were still a White Stripes side project. Jack White’s band with Brendan Benson, Jack Lawrence, and Patrick Keeler hasn’t been heard from since the 2008 album Consolers Of The Lonely... Meanwhile, Brendan Benson takes the lead on “Now That You’re Gone,” a blues-rock jam with a squirmy riff and a big, slow central beat. It sounds like the prestige version of bar rock, and it gets in a big, molten Jack White guitar solo.

Marianne Faithfull feat: Nick Cave - The Gypsy Faerie Queen 3:40
Song You Need to Know: Marianne Faithfull’s ‘The Gypsy Faerie Queen’
...She also worked with Cave again for a track on her just-released, new album (and 21st overall), Negative Capability, and ironically it shows off more of her capability for positivity. Although there’s still a certain sadness to “The Gypsy Faerie Queen” (between Nick Cave and Marianne Faithfull, that’s inevitable), it retells Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream from the perspective of Puck, becoming a song of devotion as she sings of following the titular nymph into “the twilight in-between.” It’s a sweet fantasy, and with Cave singing along and his bandmate, Bad Seeds violinist Warren Ellis, adding some gravity to the melody, it becomes an ornate portrait of that feeling of loyalty. When compared with the song after it on the LP – a weighty redo of “As Tears Go By” – its lightness sounds even more profound.

Melissa Laveaux - Lè Ma Monte Chwal Mwen 3:32
There’s a beautifully bright sway to Mélissa Laveaux’s new track that instantly grips, the Ottawa-via-Haiti songwriter crafting something both tender and tremendous on her re-working of an original work by legendary Haitian artist Martha Jean-Claude, who escaped to Cuba after being imprisoned, whilst pregnant, by the regime for the militancy of her art. Laveaux’s take is a quietly magical piece... “The title of the song means when I’m riding my horse,” Laveaux explains. “In a vodou ceremony, when someone is possessed by a spirit, they are that spirit’s horse and the spirit is riding them. It’s also a reference to how vodou is, at times, very erotic.”

Janelle Monáe - Make Me Feel 3:14
On “Make Me Feel,” one of two new singles from Monáe’s Dirty Computer (the musician’s first LP in five years), the polymath unpacks a rubbery funk tune that recalls the likes of Prince and Sheila E. Her 1980s influences are clear, down to each massive synth line and the feeling of raw sensual energy woven throughout the song. Much like her previous work, “Make Me Feel” is a flashy mix of modern bounce and old soul that puts her dulcet voice on full display. Perhaps inspired by her recent success on the big screen—in films like the Oscar Best Picture-winning Moonlight and Oscar nominated Hidden Figures—the video for “Make Me Feel” is equally theatrical, taking colorful cues from “Black Mirror” (think Season Three’s exquisite “San Junipero” episode) and the wide-open feel of the Purple One’s “Kiss.” With its irresistible, sugary pop ethos, “Make Me Feel” could be Monáe’s most straightforward single. Yet at this point in her trajectory, where Monáe is the most visible she’s ever been, the song is a clear statement of strength, freedom, and continued evolution.

Aphex Twin - T69 Collapse 5:22
Richard D. James has a way of grabbing one’s attention—and that doesn’t just mean stunts like the recent Aphex Twin logos that popped up in Turin, London, and Los Angeles, painted on a metal grate and semi-hidden in foliage. Given such campaigns, it would be easy for the hype to eclipse the actual product. And for the first two minutes of “T69 Collapse,” the first single from Aphex Twin’s forthcoming Collapse EP, the music does seem somewhat subdued... Not, at least, until the timer ticks over to 1:55: A dissonant synth lead cuts sideways across the tune and the beat seems to quake beneath it, the drums heaving like objects on a ship’s storm-tossed prow. Chaos takes the reins; the kick drum zippers back and forth. It’s as close to heavy metal as James has ever come—and he still has one more card up his sleeve. A false ending gives way to a third part of the track that’s gentler and more bittersweet than either of its predecessors: an acid-tinged coda that jettisons some of the squirreliness and slips into a sleek, head-snapping groove.

Marie Davidson - Work It 4:20
If Marie Davidson is ever looking for a side hustle, she should consider becoming a life coach. As “Work It,” the second single off her upcoming record Working Class Woman shows, the Montreal producer understands there’s no shortcut to success. “You wanna know how I get away with everything?” she politely asks before bluntly divulging the hard truth. “I work, all the fucking time.” Built atop a layered kick drum, skittish synths, and sharp, robotic jolts of noise, Davidson’s menacing techno mantra of work and sweat leave no room for half-assed efforts...

Meernaa - Wildest Eyes 4:33
Beyond being the most sensual kiss-off of 2018, Meernaa's new single "Wildest Eyes" is a master class in synth wizardry that manages to bow before the throne of analog gear geekdom without ever sounding fussed over, or getting bogged down in its own minutiae.
"Wildest Eyes" shifts subtly, its long sonic planes moving at a seemingly glacial pace (which, fun fact, is also twice the rate of the neurons in Mike Pence's skull). Yet from the staggered plunkydunk synths in the first verse onwards, Meernaa make clear that they plan to fill every nook and cranny of the song with sumptuous surprises - whatever sounds like sand sliding down a metal door in the second verse is a particular delight.

Kurt Vile - Rollin with the Flow 2:59
...There is even a cover of Charlie Rich’s "Rollin With The Flow" half way through the album which acts as the work's beating heart, unifying and highlighting that use of chirpy yet soothing guitar and poetic, wide-eyed lyrics that are synonymous with Vile’s writing, as well as the country genre that he holds close to his heart: "It just all falls in line with all the books I was reading. I was just consuming tones of country music and that Charlie Rich cover just from a random, used Best Of CD, and his version is really awesome, it’s a bit cheesy with the girls singing and these syrupy strings like it goes a little far with the cheese [laughs] but still the root of the song is sick! I presumed it would be the very last song on the album, that was part of my original concept but the record evolved."...

Okkervil River - Pulled Up the Ribbon 4:11
...In fact, “Pulled up the Ribbon” could be one of Will Sheff’s grandiose compositions ever. Guitars ring out like giant bells, their vibrations crashing up against intent bass and percussion like swelling waves upon the shores...

Josh T. Pearson - Loved Straight to Hell 5:29
...The Straight Hits! features multiple different flavours of country, rock and all points in between, taking in blasts of goofy shit-kicking country-punk (opener ‘Straight To The Top!’), cataclysmic rock’n’roll playing its romantic drama at high-stakes (‘Loved Straight To Hell’, which compresses the elemental power of Pearson’s previous band, Lift To Experience into five and a half minutes of symphonic turmoil)...

Daughters - Ocean Song 7:28
...The song’s title, “Ocean Song,” made me think it was going to be calming and smooth, maybe with some soft piano in the background.
I was very wrong.
At the beginning, the intense guitar and drums almost made me jump. Then the band’s frontman Alexis Marshall begins to tell the story of Paul. It seems that Paul is a character made up for the song and he’s going through some kind of frustration. He’s fed up with his life and he wants “to go, to run” and find a new life outside of his own...

The Raconteurs - Sundey Driver 3:39
The first of the two new songs is an absolute banger called “Sunday Driver.” White takes the lead on that one, and it’s a rip-snorting Camaro-rocker with hooks for days. In director Steven Sebring’s video, the camera spins vertiginously around the band as they play. Jack White recaptures that old rock-star swagger, and it’s a cool thing to see.

Imam Baildi is a very popular Southeast Mediterranean dish consisting of aubergine stuffed with onion, garlic, and tomatoes simmered in olive oil. It is a similar fine blend that brothers Lysandros and Orestis Falireas and their band do – only in music! Their sound is a unique urban blend of old Greek Music with new orchestration, production and remixing techniques.

Imam Baildi (IB) were formed in 2005 by brothers Orestis and Lysandros Falireas. The project’s concept was based on sampling and remixing Greek music of the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s.
The first 3 tracks the brothers produced were the remixes of Dymeni San Arhodissa, (‘Dressed Like a Lady’ 1936 rembetiko track by Stelios Keromytis), I Zoi Mas Einai Ligi (Our Life is Short – a 1930’s tango with the voice of Sofia Vembo) and, their first hit, De Thelo Pia Na Xanarthis a 1960’s track by Manolis Chiotis.
These three were compiled into a demo that reached Minos EMI (the Greek branch of EMI, now part of Universal Music Group). In 2005, the label proposed that they release a full album based on that concept.
The homonymous first album was produced by IB in their own label (Kukin Music) and licensed to EMI Greece in October 2007. It featured 10 tracks and was a breakthrough for the music market in Greece. It also attracted attention by international media, including a review by the late Charlie Gillet. In 2009, the album made it to top positions in the European World Music Charts...

One of the most internationally successful West African musicians of the '90s, Ali Farka Touré was described as "the African John Lee Hooker" so many times that it probably began to grate on both Touré's and Hooker's nerves.
Ali Farka TouréToumani Diabaté
A master of the kora (21-string West African harp), Toumani Diabaté has brought the traditional music of his native Mali to the attention of an international audience with a series of well-received solo albums and some unlikely, but acclaimed, collaborations.

In the Heart of the Moon is a duet recording by Malian guitar slinger Ali Farka Toure and Mandé lineage griot Toumani Diabate on kora. There are a few other players who contribute percussion here and there, and Ry Cooder plays a Kawai piano on a couple of tracks and a Ripley guitar on one, but other than these cats, this is a live duo set without edits or enhancements of any kind. There were three sessions in the conference room of the Mande Hotel in Mali, the first of which was on the eve of Farka Toure being elected mayor of his town, Niafunké. Most of the music here dates back to the Jurana Kura (translated as new era) cultural movement, which was part of the independence struggle in the 1950s and early '60s...

Award-winning, chart-topping vocalist Ana Moura is the most successful and beloved fadista to appear in the 21st century. Her recordings have consistently sold well and her global concert tours are consistent sellouts.

O Que Foi Que Aconteceu 3:39
Fado de Pessoa 3:42
from Aconteceu 2004
Nearly two centuries old, Portuguese fado comes as close as any to being a national folk music. But it wasn't always that way. Fado -- literally, fate -- flourished during the first half of the 20th century, particularly in the hands of Amalia Rodrigues, who died a national heroine in 1999. In the post-WWII era, fado's dominance began to wane, though, and it became increasingly frowned upon, considered a music of the lower classes, unfitting of a nation pushing its way into modernity. That's all changed in recent years, though, as a few young fadistas have revived the soulful style. Singers -- mostly women, such as Mariza, Misia and Cristina Branco -- have held onto fado's aching, keening melodies and sorrowful lyrics of loves lost and forgotten. Indeed, nearly every song on Ana Moura's divine, alluring second album finds the singer heartbreaking...
