Despite its hardscrabble title -- a sentiment mirrored by the deeply etched black & white cover art -- 2016's Blues of Desperation is very much a continuation of the bright, varied blues-rock heard on Different Shades of Blue. On that 2014 album, Joe Bonamassa made a conscious decision to pair with a bunch of Nashville songsmiths to help sharpen his original material, and he brings most of them back for Blues of Desperation, too. The tenor of the tunes is somewhat heavy -- there are lonesome trains, low valleys, no places for the lonely -- and the production also carries a ballast, something that comes into sharp relief on the Zep-flavored title track but can be heard throughout the record...

Kevin Selfe has been electrifying audiences nationwide since breaking into the blues scene in 2006. His growing stature as a captivating story teller and passionate performer are surpassed only by his deft mastery of blues guitar. Having relocated to Portland, OR, the Virginia native is now a leading light in the Pacific Northwest’s robust blues revival.

Originally from Roanoke, Va., Selfe discovered the blues late in life, when he was a student in meteorology at North Carolina State University. His roommate, a bass player, introduced him to the works of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Elmore James, and, by the time he graduated with honors, changed his path in life from TV weatherman to dyed-in-the-wool bluesman.

It's hard to express the creative leap Broen made between their international debut and its follow-up better than the albums' titles do. On 2017's I <3 Art, the Norwegian collective were above all creative, channeling their passion into breaking any remaining boundaries between pop, jazz, electronic music, R&B, and hip-hop. On Do You See the Falling Leaves?, they use their genre-fluid sound to explore the connections between the desire to make art and the desire to reach out to others... The title track's sensuous nine-minute sprawl is remarkably intimate, thanks to the husky warmth of Røe's voice -- which calls to mind Joan as Police Woman's Joan Wasser -- and the surprising, charming combination of tuba and a scorched electric guitar solo...


Australian singer/multi-instrumentalist who writes sparse, haunting tunes as part of trio F ingers in addition to solo work. 
Carla dal Forno - Took a Long Time from Look Up Sharp
Breaking away from the dubby abstractions of her group F ingers, Australian singer/songwriter Carla dal Forno made her solo debut in 2016 with You Know What It's Like, a magnificent album of ambient pop tunes that prompted comparisons to obscure names like Kendra Smith and In Gowan Ring. Following two EPs, including a 2018 tour cassette that included covers of songs by the B-52s and Lana Del Rey, dal Forno's second album contains some of her most direct compositions, with clearer vocals and more upfront melodies. While still sparse and haunting, this album doesn't feel as detached, and dal Forno's sentiments aren't as ambiguous as they were before... The shivering, slowed-down post-punk of "Took a Long Time" is a bit murkier, but seems to imply uncertainty in a relationship...


The project of Montreal-based singer/songwriter Brigitte Naggar, Common Holly blends acoustic, electric, and manipulated textures to weave intimate, off-kilter songs.
Common Holly - Joshua Snakes from When I Say to You Black Lightning
The follow-up to 2017's Playing House, When I Say to You Black Lightning is the Barsuk label debut of Montreal-based musician Brigitte Naggar, who records as Common Holly. With assistance from returning co-producer Devon Bate, she continues to blur and fuse distinctions between catchy and experimental, and song and composition here, settling into a presentation that's entirely digestible, if persistently peculiar... Though the songs are quiet, they hold turbulent moments, such as in "Joshua Snakes," which opens with a few seconds of finely textured noise before settling into a whispery funk groove. The rhythmic, rhyming vocal lines are routinely accosted by samples, sound effects, and instrumental interjections that never throw off the singer or her spare accompaniment (bass, snare, intermittent guitar). Midway through, a simple, staccato distorted-guitar break sounds thunderous in comparison to what preceded it. The guitar hangs around for the rest of the song with the rhythm section, layered vocals, and...flute.


Squirrel Flower is the solo dream-folk project of Ella Williams. She is based in Boston, MA and Grinnell, IA.

Squirrel Flower is the musical project of Boston-based Ella O’Connor Williams. Polyvinyl has signed on to release her debut album I Was Born Swimming early next year... “Red Shoulder” is a melancholy indie-rock power ballad that bears a strong Mitski influence, but its tangled web of guitars evokes acts like American Football and Slaughter Beach, Dog too. “I’m still reeling from your last call,” Williams sings, before the song descends into a dramatic guitar breakdown. In a press release she says “Red Shoulder” is “a song about destabilization and dissociation,” continuing, “Something soft and tender becomes warped and sinister, turning into sensory overload and confusion. How can something so lovely turn painful and claustrophobic? The song ends with a heavy and visceral guitar solo, attempting to reground what went awry.”


Experimental jazz-based outfit that crosses the boundaries between post-bop, funk, rock, and electronic music.
Kneebody feat. Becca Stevens - Wounds Let in the Light from Chapters
Kneebody's tenth studio album, 2019's Chapters, is one of their most accessible albums to date, featuring a handful of guest vocalists on songs that ably straddle the line between hooky post-rock and exploratory jazz. It's an aesthetic the forward-thinking Los Angeles outfit featuring saxophonist Ben Wendel, trumpeter Shane Endsley, keyboardist Adam Benjamin, drummer/bassist Nate Wood, and bassist Kaveh Rastegar have been forging since the early 2000s, combining fusion-esque group arrangements with propulsive exploratory improvisation...
Conversely, Becca Stevens' introspective "Wounds Let the Light In" features her circular guitar arpeggio and hushed vocals framed in vibrant trumpet and sax harmonies and spiraling keyboard solo, all of which brings to mind Joni Mitchell's work with Wayne Shorter.



Trio of '90s worshipers from Halifax, U.K., with dream pop and disco influences that come together to give their indie pop sound a twist.
The Orielles - Come Down On Jupiter
The Orielles are a sleek and psychedelic indie-pop quartet from Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. They released their debut Silver Dollar Moment in early 2018 on the venerable UK label Heavenly... Disco Volador’s opening track and lead single, “Come Down On Jupiter,” begins as a languid shuffle, but before long it has exploded into guitar-pop bliss. And then suddenly it’s something like outer-space disco rock. As the five-minute runtime unfolds, the transformations continue to be as abundant as the hooks.


Jam band fronted by Phish's Page McConnell whose electronic-oriented funk, jazz, and rock first appeared in the early 2000s.
Vida Blue - Real Underground Soul Sound from Crossing Lines
The sprightly electro-funk jam band Vida Blue released a pair of studio albums and one live set in the front half of the 2000s before their helmsman, Page McConnell, retired the project and resumed his primary role as keyboardist for Phish. Formed in 2001 during a Phish hiatus, Vida Blue's original lineup was essentially a power trio with the fleet-fingered McConnell joined by bassist Oteil Burbridge (the Allman Brothers Band, Aquarium Rescue Unit) and drummer Russell Batiste (the Funky Meters)... Newcomer Adam Zimmon joins the core trio on guitar for 2019's Crossing Lines, adding new dimensions while respectfully adhering to the spaciousness of their original setup. Of the album's eight generally lengthy cuts, only two are instrumentals (the dubby "Weepa" and the Meters-esque "Real Underground Soul Sound"), marking a trend that favors McConnell's more structured, lyric-driven songwriting...

Sorry are a new London band centered around Asha Lorenz and Louis O'Bryen, two 19 year-old childhood best friends. Along with Lincoln Barrett (drums) and Campbell Baum (bass) Sorry have been making a name for themselves on London's underground circuit since 2015.

Sorry have been around for a while now, but they still haven’t put out their debut album, though they have been keeping us busy with a long string of singles. Next year, though, the UK band will release their debut album, which is called 925, in the spring...  “Right Round The Clock.” It’s a brassy drunken stumble, an extended character study that plays out like a nightmare. “I’m feeling kind of crazy/ I’m feeling kind of mad/ The dreams in which we’re famous are the best I’ve ever had,” the band’s Asha Lorenz and Louis O’Bryen duet together...

Mikal Cronin - Shelter from Seeker
...With the help of producer Jason Quiver of Papercuts, Segall and members of his band including guitrarist Emmett Kelly of Cairo Gang, Cronin set about putting them on tape. Much like the expansive, dense music on MCIII, Seeker isn't anything close to resembling his early power pop in the garage sound. This is huge, imposing music that's clothed in full arrangements of layered guitars, swelling background vocals, various keys and orchestral strings with Cronin singing with fierce passion and rueful regret. It builds on the sturdy frame of MCIII and delivers bigger emotions, trickier melodies and more sound...


Circles Around the Sun is a contemporary instrumental rock band that formed with the specific purpose of creating intermission music for Fare Thee Well, a series of reunion concerts played by the surviving members of the Grateful Dead during their 2015 tour.
 An accomplished musician, Russo has played drums often with pop and rock groups. Among bands with which he has played are Danjaboots, Fat Mama, Tom Hamilton's American Babies, and Robert Walter's 20th Congress, but is best known for his duo performances with pianist Marco Benevento.

The addition of Russo'a drumming only adds to that depth of field...  "Get It Right the First Time," is led by the rhythm section: The drummers converse with call-and-response snares and kick drums to a rocksteady reggae groove provided by MacDougall's punchy Wurlitzer fills, Horne's strolling bassline, and Casal's spacy slide playing.

Leonard Cohen - Happens To The Heart
Leonard Cohen died three years ago, but we’re about to get a new Leonard Cohen album anyway. When he died, Cohen left behind sketches of nine unreleased songs. His son Adam Cohen fleshed those sketches out into complete songs, and he got help from people like Beck, Feist, Bryce Dessner, and Daniel Lanois, turning them into the new LP Thanks For The Dance... The song itself is pretty great. It’s a simple track, with Cohen intoning heavily in the deep, ravaged voice we heard on his goodbye album You Want It Darker. He gives us one of his inimitably evocative opening lines: “I was always working steady, but I never called it ‘art’ / I’ve got my shit together, meeting Christ and reading Marx.” The song uses fluttery flamenco guitars, and the music slowly wraps itself around Cohen’s voice.

There isn't a Pere Ubu recording you can imagine living without. The Modern Dance remains the essential Ubu purchase (as does the follow-up, Dub Housing). For sure, Mercury had no idea what they had on their hands when they released this as part of their punk rock offshoot label Blank, but it remains a classic slice of art-punk. It announces itself quite boldly: the first sound you hear is a painfully high-pitched whine of feedback, but then Tom Herman's postmodern Chuck Berry riffing kicks off the brilliant "Non-Alignment Pact," and you soon realize that this is punk rock unlike any you've ever heard. David Thomas' caterwauling is funny and moving, Scott Krauss (drums) and Tony Maimone (bass) are one of the great unheralded rhythm sections in all of rock...



Skilled Irish blues-rock guitarist whose stripped-down brand of blues rock touched everyone who heard it.

...Reverting back to a trio, Gallagher toughens up his sound and blazes through some robust blues rockers  like "Last of the Independents," "Shadow Play," and "Brute Force & Ignorance" (one of his best hard rock riffs) with nervy energy... Still, the album has a samey feel due to some of the songwriting not being quite up to snuff, and a few tracks, like the moody, slow-burning "Fuel to the Fire," stretched well past its breaking point to over six minutes...


Theatrical leader of '70s-era Genesis and a bona fide pop star by the '80s despite his experimental, often exotic, material.

Peter Gabriel tells why he left Genesis in "Solsbury Hill," the key track on his 1977 solo debut. Majestically opening with an acoustic guitar, the song finds Gabriel's talents gelling, as the words and music feed off each other, turning into true poetry. It stands out dramatically on this record, not because the music doesn't work, but because it brilliantly illustrates why Gabriel had to fly on his own. Though this is undeniably the work of the same man behind The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, he's turned his artiness inward, making his music coiled, dense, vibrant. There is still some excess, naturally, yet it's the sound of a musician unleashed, finally able to bend the rules as he wishes. That means there are less atmospheric instrumental sections than there were on his last few records with Genesis, as the unhinged bizarreness in the arrangements, compositions, and productions...

Acclaimed Mississippi bluesman and member of the Bentonia blues school who also operates America's oldest surviving juke joint. The last surviving bluesman of what became known as the Bentonia School, Jimmy "Duck" Holmes is known for both his own sparse, haunting blues style and as the longtime proprietor of the Blue Front Cafe, America's longest-operating juke joint located in his hometown of Bentonia, Mississippi.
Jimmy "Duck" Holmes - Two Women from Cypress Grove
Jimmy "Duck" Holmes is one of the last practitioners of old-fashioned Mississippi blues, playing a variation that belongs to the Yazoo county town of Bentonia. Holmes kept that sound alive at his own juke joint and on a series of records in the 2000s, but the 2019 album Cypress Grove is designed as a vehicle to introduce the bluesman to a wider audience. Dan Auerbach, the lead singer of the Black Keys and head of the Easy Eye Sound studio and label, shepherded the project, bringing Holmes up to Nashville to record with a bunch of his cohorts, including guitarist Marcus King...  It's a modernization of his sound but not a bowdlerization; if anything, it's perhaps the finest realization of Holmes' blues. At the very least, it's certainly the liveliest and boldest album he's made.


New Jersey band who took notes from a canon of classic psychedelic searchers to develop their jammy, cosmic rock sound.
Garcia Peoples - One Step Behind (Single Edit) from One Step Behind
...Diving deeper into the mercurial depths than they ever have before, the band eschews their usual groove to get lost in a bit of the cosmic wilds for a patch. Malach, the elder, used to knock down sessions with everyone from Miles Davis to Arto Lindsay to Stevie Wonder so this is no nepotism knockout, this is a familial team-up for the ages. Ah-ah, but you’re gonna have to wait until the full platter’s out of the oven to hear Bob’s double overdubbed sax goodness. Right here is the radio edit, a line closer to what they’ve been playing live for the track. Heard this the other night when they opened for KV and it hit just as hard — the band workin’ up their own “Playing in the Band’ alchemy. They sync up in full symbiosis, playing off of one another with the veracity of players with twice as many trips ‘round the sun and its a delight to watch...


The frontman for Screaming Trees who went on to a fascinating solo career marked by an acoustic tone and dark, folk- and blues-inspired songwriting. Singing with a deep, nicotine-ravaged growl that's rich, strong, and sensuously forbidding,
Mark Lanegan Band - Radio Silence from Somebody's Knocking
With his deep, rough-hewn voice and easy confidence with lyrics about bad behavior and lives gone wrong, Mark Lanegan doesn't seem like the kind of guy you would invite to your next party, unless you wanted to bum out uninvited guests. Which is why 2019's Somebody's Knocking is something of a surprise coming from Lanegan; thematically, it's no cheerier than most of his work, but most of the time it has a good beat and you can dance to it, even if the folks on the dancefloor aren't laughing a lot. Like most of his releases credited to the Mark Lanegan Band, Somebody's Knocking finds him collaborating with Alain Johannes and Rob Marshall, who play most of the instruments -- Johannes is also credited as producer -- and this time Lanegan's unlikely fascination with electronics and dance music dominates the set...


L.A. outfit created slap-happy pop punk with ample hooks, buoyed by the dynamic vocals of Kim Shattuck. Fusing big guitar riffs, pop hooks, fast tempos, and an attitude that sways between sweet and snarky, the Muffs were a pop-punk band from Los Angeles led by guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Kim Shattuck.
The Muffs - On My Own from No Holiday
The late, great Kim Shattuck had a lot more to give, as proven by the cocksure charm of this (barely) posthumously released effort.
It is heartbreaking that Kim Shattuck, the forthright singer and cocksure songwriter for the Muffs, died at the beginning of October. Renowned for her short, sharp brand of power-pop punk song, yearning but prickly lyrics, and screamy, shredded vocals with a tender, expressive edge... The main Muff leaves behind a rep for sugar-pop riffage, manic tempos, deep hooks and a lyrical éclat pitched between smart snark and adoring devotion.
Kim Shattuck, star of LA punk scene, dies aged 56


Northumbrian singer/songwriter with a flair for shambolic psych-folk and experimental rock. Based out of the industrial Tyneside region of Northern England, esoteric singer/songwriter Richard Dawson's shambolic, guitar-driven folk music has drawn comparisons to other singular artists like Jandek, Mike Waterson, John Martyn, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Adem, Skip Spence, and King Creosote. Specializing in a heady blend of traditional English folk music, Sacred Harp-kissed North Country blues, and jazzy psych-folk.
Richard Dawson - Black Triangle from 2020
It's a hard time to be happy, and Richard Dawson knows it. The British guitarist and songwriter would hardly be the first artist to make music that reflects the chaos and uncertainty of a time when the world's political outlook has turned ugly and the divide between the haves and have-nots grows wider by the minute. Dawson's 2019 album 2020 is certainly a work of its time, reflecting the social, political, and economic uncertainty that has swept the globe. After two albums of spiky, echoing post-punk revivalism of the finest kind, recorded at a slow pace over long stretches, the Montreal band Corridor had to change their way of working on their third album, Junior... The chief songwriters, Jonathan Robert and Dominic Berthiaume, didn't let the short turnaround time cramp their style; every song has a jagged hook, a crystal-cut guitar line, or a sparkling melody that hits hard and sticks. The up-tempo tracks like "Domino" and "Goldie" are sweaty, pulsing indie rock powered by thrumming bass lines, and Robert's insistent vocals...


Respected New York City group that plays a highly cerebral brand of indie rock, with electronic and experimental influences.
Battles - Fort Greene Park from Juice B Crypts
Like a hummingbird in flight, Battles make the most complex labour look carefree and weightless... Ultimately, though, it's the tracks where Battles are left to their own devices that define the album. On "Fort Greene Park," watch as a blustering guitar collects itself into precarious catharsis — synths fall out of the drums that contain them, climb back in, and all builds to quietness. It's one of the most plaintively beautiful songs in Battles' catalogue, in its sonic attention to loss, to change over time. And, as we listen to it, we also listen to the sound of a band who continue to create after more than a decade — tempered with loss, yes, but also joy, also freedom.


Known on dancefloors and tastefully progressive U.K. radio programs as Floating Points, producer and DJ Sam Shepherd has applied his love for gritty funk, slick R&B, and avant-garde jazz to house, techno, and orchestral compositions that have tended to be equally stimulating through club sound systems and headphones.

Sam Shepherd's second Floating Points album is as distinct from Reflections: Mojave Desert as that live band-oriented 2017 EP is distinguishable from the painstaking 2015 LP Elaenia. The making of Crush was powered in part by the lasting creative energy Shepherd felt during a string of dates supporting the xx, for which he performed alone with only a modular synthesizer... That said, it's hard to imagine more forethought and deliberation resulting in a listen more riveting than this one.


Danish duo Bremer/McCoy make atmospheric jazz- and dub-influenced instrumental music. Together since 2013, they have issued albums on the Raske Plader label, including 2015's Ordet and 2016's Forsvinder.
Based in Copenhagen, Bremer/McCoy features bassist Jonathan Bremer and keyboardist/tape delay artist Morten McCoy.
Bremer/McCoy - Salme from Utopia
There are some albums that beg to be listened to from beginning to end in one sitting; Brian Eno's Music for Airports, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, and Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians come to mind. The fourth album (and Luaka Bop debut) from Danish instrumentalists Bremer/McCoy, 2019's Utopia, is also one of those albums. Featuring the talents of bassist Jonathan Bremer and keyboardist/tape delay artist Morten McCoy, Utopia showcases the duo's expansive, often hypnotic jazz-, dub-, and classical-influenced sound. Aesthetically, their intimate sound falls somewhere in between Keith Jarrett, Paul Winter, and Mike Oldfield without ever borrowing too heavily from any one source...


Since the release of Afric Pepperbird in 1970, no other musician save for pianist Keith Jarrett has been as closely associated with ECM Records as Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek. His playing style on both tenor and soprano horns is identified by a sharp-edged tone and long, sustained notes that often sound like cries; he prioritizes the use of space and silence.
An entire class of English vocal ensembles, sometimes placed under an "Oxbridge Sound" umbrella, specializes in early music. Among the prestigious ranks of the Gothic Voices, the Tallis Scholars, Pro Cantione Antiqua, the Oxford Camerata, and The Sixteen, longevity and musical versatility placed the Hilliard Ensemble in a class almost of their own.

Made shortly before the dissolution of the Hilliard Ensemble in 2014, this live recording first appeared in the fall of 2019. It thus has the quality of a swan song for the unique collaboration of the Hilliard Ensemble and saxophonist Jan Garbarek, which still sounds fresh many years after it was first developed. The way the cool textures of the Hilliard's singing and Garbarek's saxophone bring together the disparate worlds of medieval music, contemporary music including Baltic minimalism, and jazz remains fascinating...
