Smart, playful fusion of psychedelia and contemporary garage rock from this Brooklyn quartet. Proud denizens of Brooklyn's East Williamsburg area, Acid Dad give a psychedelic makeover to the sound and attitude of contemporary garage rock, playing up the music's trippier aspects. The group was formed in 2014 by guitarist Vaughn Hunt and drummer Kevin Walker.
Acid Dad
Come Outside 3:59
Child 4:49
from Acid Dad 2018
Through their first three years as Acid Dad, JP Basileo (bass), Sean Fahey (guitar/vocals), Vaughn Hunt (guitar/vocals), and Kevin Walker (drums) established themselves as one of New York City’s most exciting garage-punk outfits. Even without a full-length, they performed at the popular Northside Festival within a year of their formation, and they’ve drawn comparisons to Wavves, Fidlar, Twin Peaks, and the great Ty Segall. The influences, however, expand on their long-awaited self-titled debut album.
The LP can be divided into three sections with each reflecting a different phase of living in the Big Apple and on Long Island. There is the sound of suburban youth angst and restlessness, which is represented with the band’s original rambunctious and exhilarating garage-punk. After lulling us into false sense of calm, opener “Die Hard” explodes into a fast and feverish number. The song represents a new zeitgeist of a younger generation, where New Year’s resolutions are seen as obsolete and youthful apathy is a thing of the past...
French pop singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer who is the only loigical successor in chanson to Serge Gainshbourg.
Benjamin Biolay
Volver 4:03
L' Aalcool, l'absence 4:22
from Volver 2017
Once the enfant terrible of French chanson, Benjamin Biolay is now in his mid-forties and a fashion icon who has spent a decade living -- most of the time -- in the funky Argentinian artist's neighborhood that 2016's wonderful Palermo Hollywood was titled after. Volver (Spanish for "come back") is, appropriately, a formal sequel. It is marked by an even more ambitious array of styles -- from cumbia and hip-hop to rock, funk, nouveau (or, perhaps post-modern) chanson and more, but this assemblage is less carefully constructed, and thank goodness, though it will likely be more controversial for French listeners...
Revved-up and rollicking combo led by Jim Heath, who updated psychobilly for the alternative rock era. With their hot-rodded fusion of dazzling high-speed guitar runs, thundering rhythms, high-profile swagger, and lyrical smirk, the Reverend Horton Heat are perhaps the most popular psychobilly artists of all time, their recognition rivaled only by the esteem generated by the genre's founders, the Cramps.
The Reverend Horton Heat
Whole New Life 2:33
Don't Let Go of Me 4:42
from Whole New Life 2018
Jim Heath, Jimbo Wallace, and a succession of drummers have been touring under the banner of the Reverend Horton Heat since the late '80s, and after close to three decades as the wildest and loudest rockabilly band in creation, change has come to the group. 2018's Whole New Life is the Reverend Horton Heat's first album as a quartet, with Matt Jordan installed as the group's first full-time keyboard player. Jordan's rollicking piano and atmospheric organ work finally gives Heath's guitar work some competition for the melodic spotlight...
Warm and surreal Brazilian psych-folk duo formed by members of Boogarins and Supercordas. Brazilian indie psych duo Guaxe formed when two like-minded experimental musicians began collaborating in sporadic sessions where they shared their lo-fi production techniques and warm, hazy songwriting, which resulted in their wild and colorful self-titled debut album in 2019.
Guaxe
Pupilxs 3:14
Onda 4:52
Povo Marcado 6:13
from Guaxe 2019
Longtime friends and collaborators Dino Almeida and Pedro Bonifrate knew each other from the fringes of Brazil's music scene, where they made reaching experimental rock sounds with their respective bands Boogarins and Supercordas. Over a series of years, the two friends worked on a new musical project that eventually was named Guaxe after a bird native to the Atlantic forests whose call is naturally surreal. With their self-titled debut, Bonifrate and Almeida's musical connection and friendship emanates through these wild yet warm sounds of homespun psychedelia. The album's seven songs each take a slightly different approach to Guaxe's overall vision... They manage to jump around between various daydreams without ever disrupting the overall flow, gently delivering a set of exciting songs that has a uniform feel of compassion and positivity.
Vocalist who makes atmospheric orchestral pop showcasing her torchy image and sensuously husky singing style. Lana Del Rey envisioned a Southern California dream world constructed out of sad girls and bad boys, manufactured melancholy and genuine glamour, and then she came to embody this fantasy.
Lana Del Rey
Norman Fucking Rockwell 4:08
Venice Bitch 9:37
Happiness is a butterfly 4:32
Fuck it I love you 3:38
from Norman Fucking Rockwell! 2019
With the creation of her Lana Del Rey persona, singer/songwriter Lizzy Grant stitched together the iconography of a fading American dream with soaring but melancholic pop songwriting, becoming an icon unto herself in the process. Her distinctive approach blurred sadness and longing just as it did past and present, drawing on the influence of classic American pop while integrating modernized touches like trap beats and millennial cultural references. With sixth album NFR! (or Norman Fucking Rockwell for the adult set), Lana Del Rey expands her vision with the most daring and vulnerable work of her catalog. One of the first noticeable shifts is how subtle the album's sound is. Where 2017's Lust for Life had its share of huge drums and booming dynamics, many songs here are free of drums completely and tend towards far more solitary atmospheres... The patient flow, risky songwriting choices, and mature character of the album make it the most majestic chapter of Lana Del Rey's continuing saga of love and disillusionment under the California Sun.
Seattle-based band fronted by Danny Lee Blackwell whose influences include psychedelia, garage rock, and vintage pop and soul.
Night Beats
Her Cold Cold Heart 3:07
Stand With Me 3:50
Eyes on Me 2:55
from Myth of a Man 2019
It's easy to sound tough when you're part of a gang, but it's a good bit different when you're traveling all by yourself. With his band Night Beats, Danny Lee Blackwell kicked up a lot of dust with the 2013 album Sonic Bloom and 2016's Who Sold My Generation, playing fuzzy garage-accented rock with a bluesy undertow. But with his band at least temporarily out of commission, Blackwell was forced by circumstance to do things a bit differently, and he's doubled down on that thinking on 2019's Myth of a Man. Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys signed on to produce Myth of a Man, and instead of assembling a new edition of Night Beats, they headed to Nashville and recruited some veteran first-call session musicians to accompany Blackwell on his latest batch of songs. As a consequence, Myth of a Man is easily the most polished item Blackwell has released to date, and the harder edges of his garage-psych inclinations have been filed down in favor of a more pop-friendly sound that includes dashes of R&B and country rock as well as a sort of psychedelia that leans more to the Lemon Pipers than the 13th Floor Elevators...
Presenting an understated, lounge-tinted indie pop, NADINE is a collaboration between Ava Luna's Carlos Hernandez and Julian Fader, and singer Nadia Hulett (aka Nadia) of the Internet-enabled music collective Phantom Posse (Phantom Power, iLoveMakonnen, Julie Byne, et al.).
NADINE
Nook 3:18
Pews 4:44
Not My Kinda Movie 3:48
from oh my 2018
Bringing together singer Nadia Hulett with Carlos Hernandez and Julian Fader of Ava Luna, oh my is the debut LP of indie pop trio NADINE. With a restrained, jazz-inflected sophistication that can evoke '70s jazz-rock and the softer side of Laurie Anderson, at least in passing moments, the group steers clear of Ava Luna's more vivid sound...
The psychedelic pop sound of the '60s courses deeply through the blood of Nashville group the Paperhead. Formed in 2009 by three friends (guitarist/vocalist Ryan Jennings, drummer/vocalist Walker Mimms, and bassist/vocalist Peter Stringer-Hye), the band began playing shows around town, some of them in the form of psychedelic happenings replete with trippy light shows.
The Paperhead
The True Poet 4:50
Dama de Lavanda 4:04
War’s at You 2:18
from Chew 2017
The Paperhead's third album, Africa Avenue, was where it all came together for the Nashville trio. Their retro-psych sound reached its full bloom, while they also added other elements to the mix like a little country-rock and some swanky bossa nova. These few left turns sprinkled in amidst the dreamy pop-psych freakouts turned out to be teasers for the band's next album. On 2017's Chew, they rip up their playbook and treat the record as if each song were a different AM radio station circa a mid-'60s dream world that only exists in the mind of retro bands like the Paperhead. It's a pretty fun place to touch down, full of wacky juxtapositions and a kitchen-sink approach to arrangements that always keeps the listener guessing...
Singer/songwriter and 21st century heir to the Laurel Canyon sound who's also an active collaborator on the L.A. music scene. Miranda Lee Richards' songwriting career was shaped by her bohemian upbringing in San Francisco, where her parents, Ted and Teresa Richards, made a living as influential comic book artists. She grew up in the underground comic book scene, with R. Crumb serving as her de facto godfather.
Miranda Lee Richards
Ashes and Seeds 3:15
Existential Beast 5:48
On the Outside of Heaven 5:18
from Existential Beast 2017
Miranda Lee Richards' fourth album, Existential Beast, follows 2016's Echoes of the Dreamtime by just a year, a quick turnaround for a songwriter who's gone several years between records in the past. It comes with a lusher presentation, too, edging deeper into psychedelic folk-rock while hanging onto a country influence and her distinctly Laurel Canyon-esque sound. It's also, at least in part, a protest album, with songs motivated by the 2016 U.S. presidential election...
Prolific songstress, and partner-in-crime with Billy Childish, whose blues-based swagger is rooted in early rock & roll, R&B, and rockabilly.
Holly Golightly
Obstacles 3:03
Hypnotized 3:53
I’m Your Loss 4:00
Satan Is His Name 4:20
from Do the Get Along 2018
Garage rock legend Holly Golightly began her reign in the early '90s and spent the following decades churning out countless volumes of searing, attitude-heavy '60s-modeled big-beat rock & roll. Even the 11 years between 2004's Slowly But Surely and 2015's Slowtown Now! weren't signs of Golightly slowing down, as the break from solo albums was spent producing upwards of eight albums with her side project Holly Golightly & the Brokeoffs. Her 11th proper solo album, Do the Get Along, doesn't differ greatly from any other entry in her massive catalog, but that doesn't suggest stagnation in any way. With one of the more distinctive and expressive voices in garage rock, Golightly sounds every bit at the top of her game as she has on the majority of her albums, leaning even harder on the smoky atmospheres and simmering scorned-lover narratives that mark some of her most electrifying work... Throughout Do the Get Along, Golightly demonstrates her knack for restraint and effortless charisma. She breaks no new ground over these 12 songs, but in the case of an artist with this much mastery of her work, more of the same is happily welcomed.
Born in Limoges, France, Fabienne Delsol combines French pop with classic British beat. French-born vocalist Fabienne Delsol started her career as lead singer of the beat group-obsessed Bristols, then branched out on her own with a sound that started off in similar fashion only with some psychedelia and French pop added to the mix
Fabienne Delsol
See How They Run 3:10
Door Knob 3:14
No Love To Give 2:06
Ladder 3:27
from Four 2019
After taking a long break from recording, Fabienne Delsol returns with another light-hearted and snappy album that combines the hookiness of the beat group boom, the drama of vintage French pop, and the murky swirl of psychedelia. Her previous solo albums were helmed by Liam Watson at his famed Toerag studio; this time around Delsol takes half the wheel, with the studio's engineer Luke Oldfield also steering. They get a sound that's a little less reverb coated and a bit snappier, bringing Delsol's sound a little closer to the modern era. Not close enough to be be bland or slick; just enough to make the album sound less like a long-lost curio. As before, the songs are split between newly written tracks and covers of decades-old obscurities, both sung by Delsol in her sophisticated style...
