1998-2007

London bassist who brought the funk and dub to Public Image Ltd. before going on to a collaboration-heavy solo career within world music. Jah Wobble is one of the genuine polymaths to emerge from the British post-punk scene of the late 1970s. He is a virtuoso bassist, composer, producer, journalist, poet and author. As a musician, his dub-heavy style weds reggae, jazz, funk, punk, and numerous global folk traditions (from Celtic to Asian music and more)...
Mehmeda Majka Bubage 3:10
St. Mary-Le-Bow 4:04
Mount Zion 12:10
from Umbra Sumus 1998
The strange, spiritual album that is Umbra Sumus is one of the more interesting items released in 1998. Bassist and composer Jah Wobble creates strangely compelling soundscapes that draw textures from a variety of ethnic traditions without explicitly evoking any one of them. .. At times, Jah Wobble's music verges on art-jazz, at times electronica with melodic sound effects, and at times it is in territory that doesn't have a name because nobody else sounds quite like this. Whatever you call this music, it is interesting throughout. .. The name of this album translates as "We Are Shadows," but many listeners will find that this music sheds welcome light on the possibilities of musical fusion.

This talented African guitarist's technique has often been compared to Delta blues legend Robert Johnson. One of the most internationally successful West African musicians of the '90s, Ali Farka Touré was described as "the African John Lee Hooker" so many times that it probably began to grate on both Touré's and Hooker's nerves. There is a lot of truth to the comparison, however, and it isn't exactly an insult...
Ali's Here (Ali Farka Touré) 3:13
Saukare (Ali Farka Touré) 2:51
Instumental (Ali Farka Touré) 4:13
from Niafunké 1999
Malian guitarist Ali Farka Toure's music has always managed global travel with ease and musical grace, shrinking the miles between Western Africa and the Mississippi Delta and seemingly visiting every city in between. Toure has received his share of accolades for blurring the lines between his contemporary/traditional fingerpicking style and "country blues."... He establishes a firm aesthetic residence on Niafunké, his first and most welcome CD in five years. Niafunké was recorded using a state-of-the-art portable studio in Toure's home village of Niafunke, which clearly lends a decisive authentic flavor and sense of musical place to the disc. Each tune is a lithe and resonant labyrinth of call-and-response patterns: a fingerpicked guitar speaks to a one-stringed njarka fiddle, calabash pummelings weave into those of the conga drums, and a lively small chorus answers Toure's authoritative lead vocals. A couple of the best cuts include "Ali's Here" and "Saukare." A beautifully rendered and intoxicating record.

A Mexican-American Laurie Anderson or if Frida Kahlo were a musician instead of a visual artist. Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Lila Downs is among the most globally popular singers of Latin music. One reason is that despite long established roots in Mexico and the United States, her cultural vision is anthropological. Hers is informed by ancient and earthy cultures both from her native Oaxaca -- boleros, rancheras, and mariachis -- and U.S. with its jazz, blues, and soul standards. Her own songwriting topics reflect themes of political and social justice, immigration, transformation, and environmentalism, all rooted in the human condition.
Nueve Viento (Paul Cohen / Lila Downs) 4:46
Luna (Paul Cohen / Lila Downs) 3:38
La Iguana 3:05
from Tree Of Life 2000
Downs' remarkable voice has been compared to both Cesaria Evora and Susana Baca, combining operatic training and jazz chops, while maintaining her Mixtec Indian heritage and incorporating music from many different Latin cultures. Inquisitive fans of worldbeat music will want to investigate Tree of Life.

1991-2001

The Cape Verdean singer was the preeminent force of morna music, which combines fado, jazz, and Latin. A native of the island nation of Cape Verde, Cesária Évora was known as the country's foremost practitioner of the morna, which is strongly associated with the islands and combines West African percussion with Portuguese fados, Brazilian modhinas, and British sea shanties.
Mar Azul 3:38
Cabo Verde 3:14
from Mar Azul 1991
From Cesaria Evora's opening wail on Mar Azul's title track, one knows that this disc, a short set comprised of only eight songs, is going to be something special. This is the album that won Evora the praise of Paris, and was released prior to her international hit, Miss Perfumado. These are classic mornas at their most haunting -- all the songs are devastating, slow-burning, and stellar. The subject matter is about love, loss, and the heartbreak of life in Cape Verde. The music is acoustic, with guitars, sweeping pianos, and the occasional horn or violin to augment the effect. The liner notes set up the image of Evora ("Cize," as she is known to those close to her) as she prepares to sing in a smoky Cape Verdean nightclub. The overlying feel of this album is that of a dark and intimate seaside bar, under a starry sky, featuring a beloved singer who woos the audience with her dreamy, mesmerizing voice. Highlights include the haunting "Mar Azul," the elegantly moody "Cabo Verde,"... and its heartbreaking finale, "Separacao." This truly original and understated album burns with the underlying ferocity of an emotional roller coaster, and introduced to the world the mornas of Cape Verde and their most famous interpreter, Cesaria Evora.

Singer/songwriter Kiko Veneno was born in Figueres, Spain, and later settled in Sevilla making his live debut at a local university in 1971. After participating in a duet called Kiko y Germán, he joined brothers Rafael and Raimundo Amador to form Veneno, a flamenco/pop act that disbanded a year later. In 1981, Kiko Veneno made his first solo record, Seré Mecánico por Tí...
Lobo López 4:55
Echo de Menos 3:47
...A seminal but erratic artist, Veneno benefited here from the key support of Radio Futura's Santiago Auserón and producer Joe Dworniak, and was thus able to focus his talents for a set that included classics such as "Lobo López," "En un Mercedes Blanco," "Echo de Menos," and "Joselito."...

Listeners who learn the name of this band will in the process learn an old Hungarian proverb, meaning "the end of pains," and normally used to describe the situation when someone dies. Neither of the words is actually Hungarian -- "kampec" is Yiddish, "dolores" is Latin -- but the band itself has been the most successful touring Hungarian rock band since the collapse of the Soviet Eastern bloc in the mid-'60s.
Tű fokán 4:41
Jeges hevület 4:04
Ödögök 3:38
...For the following decade Kampec Dolores toured the entire European continent more than two dozen times. Musically the group started with the kind of new wave, post-punk styles that were prevalant in the '80s. The musicians worked with many different influences from ethnic music and avant-garde music including free improvisation. The vocalist Gabi Kenderesi developed her own style of scat singing, using made-up languages and extended vocal techniques. She is also a fine violinist...

At the forefront of the Rock en Español movement, the band mixes rock, punk, electronics, and the occasional traditional Mexican flavoring. The Mexican quartet has remained one of the biggest acts on the Latin music scene since, inspiring two generations of rockers in their wake...
El Aparato (Rubén Albarrán) 3:18
Esa Noche (Elorza Rangel) 3:28
El Fin de la Infancia (Joselo Rangel) 2:18
El Puñal y el Corazón (Rubén Albarrán) 4:21
from Re 1994
For Re, Café Tacuba experimented with different styles and sounds, resulting in one of the most wildly varied releases of the '90s... Re proves that Café Tacuba is lyrically and musically more adventurous than most of its '90s peers.
...The band employs a standard rock lineup of guitar/bass/drums with vocals, certainly, but the members also incorporate electronics as well as exotic instrumentation into their music, which encompasses styles as divergent as punk and ballads, as well as regional Mexican sounds like norteña, cumbia, ranchera, and even mariachi and electronica, indie pop, and garage rock. .. While critics look at these reasons to signify Café Tacuba's importance, legions of global music followers are enamored with them simply because of their music, which is broadly appealing not only because of its groundbreaking nature, but also because of it's fun, madcap, and ever-changing...

Fierce and hypnotic post-punk U.K. trio. Combining the visceral and cerebral sides of post-punk with sonic and visual flair, the U.K. trio Drahla takes inspiration from '70s no wave as well as legends like Wire, the Fall, and Television Personalities.
Drahla - Gilded Clouds from Useless Coordinates
“Go inwards and be bold.” This was Harmony Korine’s advice to aspiring creatives, during a Q&A at the British Film Institute back in early 2016. For the recently-formed Drahla, his words served as something of a directive, encouraging the trio to trust their own instincts, however far removed they might be from those of their peers. Three years on, the Leeds-formed band have defined their own vital subset of art-rock with Useless Coordinates, a debut album that’s as fearless as it is enthralling... As per their earliest releases, No Wave and post-punk remain integral to Drahla’s musical universe, evident in Brown’s brilliantly deadpan drawl, in the Gang Of Four-esque guitars on Gilded Cloud... On Gilded Cloud elegant snapshots from the golden age of Hollywood are juxtaposed with abrasive guitar textures... The result is an uncompromising but deeply rewarding debut where the internal and external, cerebral and visceral coalesce to quite startling effect.

Acclaimed indie rockers who mix preppy, well-read indie rock with joyful, Afro-pop-inspired melodies and rhythms.
Vampire Weekend - Sympathy from Father of the Bride
During the six years between Modern Vampires of the City and Father of the Bride, things that seemed essential to Vampire Weekend changed drastically. Founding member Rostam Batmanglij left to pursue his solo career, while Ezra Koenig left the East Coast to settle in Los Angeles. These shifts in lineup and location are just a few of the changes Vampire Weekend take in stride on their fourth album. After reaching peak musical and lyrical density on Modern Vampires of the City, they're reborn with a West Coast perspective and pace on Father of the Bride, giving all 18 of its songs more room for their novelistic detail and surprising juxtapositions...

Seattle indie quartet offers noisy but tuneful post-punk, shoegaze, and Flying Nun-inspired guitar pop. Seattle quartet Versing emerged in early 2016 with a noisy but tuneful barrage of post-punk, shoegaze, and '90s-centric indie rock
Versing - Tethered from 10000
Emerging from the Pacific Northwest college radio system, Seattle-based combo Versing present an organic collision of post-punk, jagged indie rock, and shoegaze, glazed with a matte finish and a '90s underground aesthetic. That frontman Daniel Salas once served as the alternative music director of Tacoma's KUPS-FM -- where he bonded with bandmates Graham Baker (guitar), Kirby Lochner (bass), and Max Keyes (drums) -- almost seems like a prerequisite for the type of coolly detached, politically driven alt-rock that Versing champions...

A Northwest alternative rock supergroup featuring Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker and R.E.M.'s Peter Buck.
Filthy Friends - Emerald Valley from Emerald Valley
It shouldn't surprise anyone that a band with Corin Tucker on lead vocals would have a strong political bent, and that was certainly the case with 2017's Invitation, the first album from Filthy Friends, her supergroup side project with Peter Buck from R.E.M., Kurt Bloch from the Fastbacks, and Scott McCaughey from the Young Fresh Fellows and the Minus 5. But for their second album, 2019's Emerald Valley, Tucker has upped the ante, with nearly every song delivering some salvo in support of the environment, in defiance of social and economic inequality, and against the persecution of the powerless...

After her band Veronica Falls split up in the early 2010s, vocalist/guitarist Roxanne Clifford began writing and recording synth pop under the name Patience. After a handful of singles introduced her sound -- which featured different instrumentation but also the same sense of dramatic melancholy Clifford brought to previous projects -- the first Patience album, Dizzy Spells, was released in 2019.
Patience - Voices in the Sand from Dizzy Spells
After the demise of indie pop royalty Veronica Falls, the band's Roxanne Clifford jumped continents and landed in Los Angeles. Once there, she started writing songs with guitars like she had in the past, but soon gravitated towards using keyboards and delving deeply into the colder sounds of synth pop. When it came time to start recording, she chose the name Patience and headed back to Scotland to work with Lewis Cook of Happy Meals. The sound of Patience was both familiar and strikingly new on the three singles that were released in 2015 and 2016. Clifford's hauntingly pure vocals remained, her brilliant use of backing vocals was in effect -- though she sang them all herself this time-- and the songcraft was still the perfect mix of restraint and drama...

Russian indie electronic musician whose brand of lo-fi pop draws from '90s techno and jungle influences.
Kedr Livanskiy - Why Love ( з а ч е м л ю б о в ь) from Your Need ( т в о я б е д а)
Russian electronic artist Kedr Livanskiy's early releases contained wintry lo-fi house and jungle tracks with supremely haunting vocal melodies which still resonate several years later. As fantastic as those records were (particularly 2016's January Sun EP), her second full-length, Your Need, outdoes them and feels like nothing less than a creative rebirth. The fog has mostly cleared, and these songs sound much brighter and sunnier. They're also shorter, poppier, and more energetic...

A longstanding yet underground, disco/house-infused band from the U.K. Crazy P are an English electronic group heavily influenced by vintage disco, soul, and house music.
Crazy P - Is This All It Seems from Age of the Ego
British electronic band Crazy P have been continually refining their blend of disco, soul, house, and pop since the second half of the '90s, delivering remarkably solid albums and bringing enough live heat to land supporting slots for Chaka Khan and Chic. Age of the Ego, the group's eighth studio album, sounds perfectly in line with their other albums, but this one is unmistakably charged with a greater sense of urgency than anything else they've done. The album's title and cover art, which depicts monkeys taking a selfie, immediately express pointed commentary on the public's social media obsession, and the lyrics go further than that...

Finnish-Bolivian singer known for his smoky, old-school brand of '60s-style pop and R&B.
Bobby Oroza - This Love from This Love
Singer Bobby Oroza fills his debut album, 2019's evocative This Love, with vintage-sounding pop and R&B that sounds like it was recorded at Motown's "Studio A" in 1963. However, rather than bringing to mind the work of a mainstream artist like Marvin Gaye or the Temptations, This Love is more akin to a lost cult classic. A Helsinki native of Finnish and Bolivian descent, Oroza purportedly grew up listening to his grandfather play Latin and Cuban folk songs, and later became enamored of classic R&B, jazz, Nuyorican soul, and vintage pop albums. As a teenager, he also spent time in Cuba studying percussion and singing...  This Love was recorded at Finland's Timmion studio with Oroza's own Funk Brothers -- drummer Jukka Sarapää and bassist Sami Kantelinen (aka Cold Diamond & Mink) -- as well as guitarist Seppo Salmi. All three musicians previously worked with the similarly retro-inspired singer Nicole Willis and bring a raw, analog sound to the album...

Fronted by Tarriona Ball, a powerful New Orleans-based R&B band who won NPR's 2017 Tiny Desk Contest and signed with Verve.
Tank and the Bangas feat. Robert  Glasper - Lazy Daze from Green Balloon
Not to be mistaken for a club-oriented project from Grammy-nominated R&B stalwart Durrell "Tank" Babbs, Tank and the Bangas are a wholly collaborative band fronted by the like-nicknamed Tarriona Ball, a poet, singer, and rapper of many, many voices...  Two live EPs and a much larger studio recording budget later, the band truly arrive with Green Balloon. For Tank and the Bangas, the title symbolizes wealth, weed, inexperience, and celebration all at once. Ball indulges in some joyously materialistic wordplay but elsewhere alludes to money as a necessity for survival. She sings often of getting high while also feeling guilt about it. As she tries to keep it together, she feels overstimulated, loses track of time and belongings, and achieves blissful escape until a sense of inertia takes over...

A Mexican-American Laurie Anderson or if Frida Kahlo were a musician instead of a visual artist.
Lila Downs - Clandestino ((Manu Chao cover)  from Al Chile
...Comprised of originals and covers, the album's second single, "Clandestino," was penned and recorded by Manu Chao during the '90s; it's a fine example of the musical flavors at work here. Downs' reading is a protest of current U.S. immigration policies, delivered from a feminine perspective -- a mother's. She keeps the original lyrics that depict people living like outlaws because they lack documentation, then ad-libs with real pain: "If we’re not going to take care of our children, who will?" Downs takes the reggae backdrop of Chao's original and transforms it into an electro cumbia as Lara adds dubwise elements to bridge the gap...

Brooklyn-based quartet bring more psychedelic impulses to traditional Colombian forms.
Combo Chimbita - El Camino from Ahomale
While creating music firmly rooted in Columbian traditions, Brooklyn-based outfit Combo Chimbita often sound like they're broadcasting live from another planet entirely. Ahomale is the band's second full-length album and expands on their cosmic approach to Afro-Latin styles, incorporating a wealth of celestial synth sounds into performances that are both fiery and controlled. The first of many striking things about Combo Chimbita's sound is the power of singer Carolina Oliveros' voice... The precision playing and flawless design of Ahomale take the listener on a mind-bending trip through unexplored worlds, where both danger and discovery lurk.

Fierce and hypnotic post-punk U.K. trio. Combining the visceral and cerebral sides of post-punk with sonic and visual flair, the U.K. trio Drahla takes inspiration from '70s no wave as well as legends like Wire, the Fall, and Television Personalities.
Drahla - React/Revolt from Useless Coordinates
...As per their earliest releases, No Wave and post-punk remain integral to Drahla’s musical universe, evident in Brown’s brilliantly deadpan drawl, in the Gang Of Four-esque guitars on Gilded Cloud, and in Duffin’s skronking saxophone on React/Revolt, which draws parallels with the work of James Chance and the Contortions... The set’s sharp angles, stark tones and claustrophobic textures are reflected in the album’s artwork. Designed by Brown and Riggs - as per all previous record sleeves and promotional videos - the minimalist, mixed media creation takes inspiration from Talking Heads and Gang Of Four album art, the work of American artist Cy Twombly, and the economical, regimented aesthetic of the Bauhaus movement. “Drahla came about off the back of needing an outlet for creative expression,” Brown explains. “So the whole aesthetic is hugely important. As important as the music.”... All tracks written and performed by Luciel Brown, Rob Riggs and Mike Ainsley. Saxophone written and performed by Christopher Duffin.

Family act from southern France whose Afro-Spanish take on flamenco launched them to worldwide fame in the 1980s. The Gipsy Kings are largely responsible for bringing the joyful sounds of progressive pop-oriented flamenco to the world. The band started out in Arles, a village in southern France, during the '70s when brothers Nicolas and Andre Reyes, the sons of renowned flamenco artist Jose Reyes, teamed up with their cousins Jacques, Maurice, and Tonino Baliardo, whose father is Manitas de Plata. They originally called themselves Los Reyes...

It has been seven long years since France's groundbreaking Gipsy Kings have issued a recording of new material. Savor Flamenco, the group's debut for Knitting Factory, still features the band's original lineup of two groups of brothers -- the Reyes (Nicolas, Canut, Paul, Patchai, and Andre) and the Baliardos (Tonino, Paco, and Diego) -- with guest players filling out the cast. The set was produced by Tonino Baliardo and Nicolas Reyes. Musically, Savor Flamenco looks simultaneously backward and forward. The single "Samba Samba" commences with a breezy bossa nova before spiraling out, wedding both fiery flamenco and driving Brazilian samba...

from The Gnawa Berber 2014
Based in the U.K., but inspired his Moroccan-Berber origins, Simo Lagnawi presents us with an exciting and entrancing album of a dozen songs that successfully and faithfully adheres to North African gnawa traditions. There is some improvisation of sorts, which cover Saharan folk songs and ceremonial compositions. All of the songs are diverse and feature the guimbri -- a plucked lute that is native to North Africa. The authentic and tribal sound of the guimbri is haunting and natural with vocals, flute, fiddle, and banjo accompaniment in spots. Hassan Hakmoun fans will find some similarities, but the music is not electronic or rock-oriented. This is for fans seeking unadulterated gnawan trance music. Mexican guitar duo that plays an appealing amalgam of classical, Latin, world music, and heavy metal.  Before they became the most visible flamenco duo of the early 2000s, guitarists Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero bonded over heavy metal while growing up in Mexico City. They combined their talents for a time in the metal group Tierra Acida, playing around D.F. in the roughest clubs the city had to offer. Though they recorded some material, Tierra Acida never hit it big, and an album was never released. Instead, Sanchez and Quintero concentrated on learning more guitar styles, teaching lessons during the day and playing bossa novas in hotel bars at night. Bored and frustrated with their chances in the Americas, the two decided to try their luck in Europe instead.

From Re-Foc, their very first release in 2002, post-nuevo flamenco guitar duo Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero thumbed their noses at purist notions of flamenco. Having initially come from heavy metal, they wedded their new music to metal's pyrotechnics and the various folk styles of their native Mexico, creating a new genre in acoustic music. That said, Area 52 is unlike anything they have recorded before. The album began as simply an orchestral overview of tunes from their catalog to issue while they wrote new material, but it became something wholly other. Along with producer Peter Asher and arranger Alex Wilson (whose charts here are almost too fantastic to believe), they employed C.U.B.A., a 13-piece Cuban orchestra, and the diverse talents of several guests. Recording mainly in Havana, the duo, with C.U.B.A., set about completely reinventing RyG's songs...

Lutenist and post-minimalist composer who has brought his instrument's sound into the 21st century and collaborated with many artists. Jozef Van Wissem is a Dutch lutenist and post-minimalist composer who has been adapting via tablature and improvising on music written for his instrument circa 1600 A.D.

There are lots of composers out there, and more than a few lutenists, but very few people still alive today who are both, and even fewer who write contemporary music for that ancient instrument. Jozef Van Wissem is one of those very few, and on this album, he plays six original compositions on a 13-course Baroque lute. In the past he has written and performed music for lute and electronics, but here he is accompanied only by the occasional electric guitar of filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and the mumbled vocals of Jeanne Madic. The titles of the pieces and the lyrics sung by Madic are taken or adapted from the Revelations of Divine Love of 14th century mystic Julian of Norwich, and the music itself tends to be rather minimalist, with lots of repetitive arpeggiated figures, sometimes consisting of overdubbed parts...

Guitarist/producer and composer Justin Adams is both one of Britain's great bluesmen and African crossover music's leading proponents. First coming to prominence in 1990 with Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart, Adams laid the foundations of his career through working as a respected sideman. His list of credits grew to include internationally known artists such as Sinéad O'Connor, Damien Dempsey, and more. His love affair with the music of North Africa first became evident with the release of his debut solo record in 2001.

from Desert Road  2001
Justin Adams has a fascination with the space of the desert, and on his solo debut, he recreates the feel, openness, and rhythms of the Western Sahara, where it bleeds into Mali, Morocco, and Mauritania. A proponent of the less-is-more school of playing, he inhabits a place where North African, West African, and blues music intertwine and notes bend, hang, and ultimately mix with a late 20th century recording studio, where samples and beats co-exist. The percussion, from longtime collaborator Salah Dawson Miller, fleshes out the bones. Although Adams is very much a player's player, he lets the rawness of style show through, never flashy, always to the point, whether plucking lead lines or fingerpicking, letting his left hand dictate the melodies and rhythms. The overall effect is soothingly hypnotic, as mesmerizing as shifting waves of desert sand. It's beautiful, often eerily bluesy (a nod to Blind Willie Johnson, one of his idols), and evokes the mystery of one of the earth's last great places. A tiny masterpiece.

Kolinda plays complex folk music with diverse instrumentation and with medieval and Eastern influences. They lived in France for a time, and were produced by Hughes de Courson of the French folk group Malicorne. Kolinda disbanded in 1979, only to reform five years later.
After playing as a group for 11 out of the past 16 years, with 7 albums under their belts, Kolinda is still relatively unknown in their native Hungary and virtually unheard of in North America.
"They're one of the most interesting European groups that I've heard," says Gary Cristall, organizer of the Vancouver Folkfestival, "but they do it in a different way. Even though they were doing traditional stuff, it had a different edge to it. They've never been looked on very favorably in Hungary. They were always a little too far outside."...

A Mexican-American Laurie Anderson or if Frida Kahlo were a musician instead of a visual artist. Singer Lila Downs grew up with the culture of her father, a professor from the United States, but eventually turned her back on it to explore the tradition of her mother, a Mixteca Indian from Mexico. In doing so, she has created a very individual strain of song that has indigenous Mexican roots and North American sonorities. She grew to love music, specifically classical and opera, and began studying those in college. After two years, however, she experienced a crisis, questioning why she was singing and dropping out to become a Deadhead, following the Grateful Dead around the country in a VW bus, earning money by making and selling jewelry, and not singing at all.

For Downs, music entails a sacred quest, one not without risk; but laying personal claim to some untouchable Latin classics...
