2005-1994

With their unlikely but fascinating mix of arty concepts and raw sounds, the White Stripes were among the leaders of the early-2000s garage rock revival and helped define the sound of 21st century rock as the decade progressed. Jack and Meg White's clever use of limitations -- from their lineup to their instrumentation to their red, white, and black color scheme -- maximized their creativity, allowing them to bring a surprising number of facets to their seemingly back-to-basics approach. Meg's straight-ahead, minimalist drumming complemented Jack's freewheeling guitars and vocals perfectly, and their music touched on not only on obvious forebears such as the Gories and the Stooges, but also Son House and Blind Willie McTell's mythic blues, Led Zeppelin's riffs...
Blue Orchid 2:37
Instinct Blues4:16
According to Jack White, Get Behind Me Satan deals with "characters and the ideal of truth," but in truth, the album is just as much about what people expect from the White Stripes and what they themselves want to deliver. Advance publicity for the album stated that it was written on piano, marimba, and acoustic guitar, suggesting that it was going to be a quiet retreat to the band's little room after the big sound, and bigger success, of Elephant. Then "Blue Orchid," Get Behind Me Satan's lead single, arrived. A devilish slice of disco-metal with heavily processed, nearly robotic riffs, the song was thrilling, but also oddly perfunctory; it felt almost like a caricature of their stripped-down but hard-hitting rock. As the opening track for Get Behind Me Satan, "Blue Orchid" is more than a little perverse, as though the White Stripes are giving their audience the required rock single before getting back to that little room, locking the door behind them, and doing whatever the hell they want...

One of the most prominent figures in late 20th century blues, singer/multi-instrumentalist Taj Mahal played an enormous role in revitalizing and preserving traditional acoustic blues. Not content to stay within that realm, Mahal soon broadened his approach, taking a musicologist's interest in a multitude of folk and roots music from around the world -- reggae and other Caribbean folk, jazz, gospel, R&B, zydeco, various West African styles, Latin, even Hawaiian. The African-derived heritage of most of those forms allowed Mahal to explore his own ethnicity from a global perspective and to present the blues as part of a wider musical context...
The Very Best of Taj Mahal
Señor Blues (Horace Silver) 6:44
Lonely Avenue (Doc Pomus) 3:26
Take a Giant Step (Gerry Goffin / Carole King) 4:37
Mailbox Blues (Taj Mahal) 3:31
Throughout his career, Taj Mahal has always been considered a bluesman, which is true enough, since the basis for everything he does has been the country blues, but he is not a traditionalist at heart, and he has always looked for ways to push the blues into new places and shapes. Adding at times rhythms and sensibilities that are drawn from reggae, ragtime, calypso, zydeco, and other genres, Mahal practices a kind of blues hybrid that is his alone, and he has been a huge influence on newer artists like Chris Thomas King and Corey Harris. This collection derives from the five albums he recorded with Private Records during the 1990s, and overlaps somewhat with The Best of the Private Years, released in 2000...

Projecting a maturity beyond her years, blues singer Shemekia Copeland began making a splash in her own right before she was even out of her teens. Copeland fashioned herself as a powerful, soul-inflected shouter in the tradition of Koko Taylor and Etta James, yet also proved capable of a subtler range of emotions. Her 1998 Alligator debut, Turn the Heat Up!, featured a career-elevating version of "Ghetto Child," a classic by her father, renowned Texas blues guitarist Johnny Copeland, that has been part of her performance repertoire ever since...
Livin' on Love (Craig Fuller / Gary Nicholson) 4:03
When a Woman's Had Enough (Alan Mirikitani / Dennis Walker) 3:54
Talking to Strangers (Mac Rebennack) 4:06
This disc, which has Dr. John at the controls as a producer, brings together a mix that brings out the best for all those concerned and involved with this project. There is no weakness here, it is a straight-ahead use of all the strengths of Shemekia Copeland, daughter of Johnny Copeland. The songs were well selected to effectively show off all her potency as a vocalist. There are some many good writers that are also players on this disc that the tunes fit like gloves. There are strong contributions by John "Fingers" Hahn, Mac Rebennack, and Shemekia Copeland herself. The tunes, varied in style, are all based in the deep blues, and were selected for their capability to push her vocal talents to constant new personal pinnacles...  This disc shows us some new sides of this fine singer, while she stretches her limits and she more than holds her own while being in the company of such luminous musicians as accompany her on this disc. This disc seems a return to the blues burner she is capable of being. She does her daddy proud on this stellar disc.

Contrary to his colorful sobriquet (supplied by prolific South Louisiana producer J.D. Miller), harpist Lazy Lester swore he never was all that lethargic... While growing up outside of Baton Rouge, Leslie Johnson was influenced by Jimmy Reed and Little Walter. But his entry into playing professionally arrived quite by accident: while riding on a bus sometime in the mid-'50s, he met guitarist Lightnin' Slim, who was searching fruitlessly for an AWOL harpist. The two's styles meshed seamlessly, and Lester became Slim's harpist of choice...
Blues Stop Knockin' (Jay Miller) 4:28
Sad City Blues (J.D. Miller) 4:50
I'm Gonna Miss You (Like the Devil) 3:50
Not the most nimble harp player on the blues block, Lazy Lester nonetheless connects when he's backed by a sympathetic band, as he is on this recording, his first in three years. Aided immensely by guitarists Jimmie Vaughen and Derek O'Brien (who also produces) on all but one track, the 70-year-old Lester returns to his swampy Excello label past on this sturdy release. Although it was recorded in Texas, Lester effortlessly evokes his Louisiana roots in a set predominantly consisting of covers that feature his moody harmonica and deep, bluesy sound. With muscular songs and a band who knows their way around a muddy groove, Lester is in fine, low-key form throughout. Far from energetic, as his moniker implies, he sounds remarkably inspired throughout. When he hits his mark on the slow blues of "Sad City Blues" (featuring guests Sue Foley, Sarah Brown, and Gene Taylor) or connects on the Jimmy Reed-ish "Miss You Like the Devi," his quivering voice and unamplified harp evoke the sound of those great '60s songs he turned into models of the genre...

Sue Foley is a Canadian guitarist, singer, songwriter and bandleader based in Austin, Texas. Her trademark instrument is a pink paisley Fender Telecaster. She signed with Antone's Records for her 1992 acclaimed debut album Young Girl Blues, and followed with Without a Warning a year later. Foley's wicked lead guitar made her a rarity among blueswomen at the time.
Lightnin' Boogie 1:44
I Feel So Good 3:24
Me & My Chauffeur Blues 3:06
Foley was born in Ottowa, Ontario in 1968. She spent her early childhood in Canada longing for her father's guitar. She learned to play at age 13, became interested in blues from listening to the Rolling Stones and other blues and roots rock bands. She played her first professional gig at 16. After graduating high school, she relocated to Vancouver where she formed a band... She signed to Shanachie for 1998's Ten Days In November, then returned to live in Canada where 2000's Love Comin' Down won a Juno award. In 2001 Foley started a music history project called Guitar Woman based on dozens of interviews she conducted with the world’s leading female guitarists. Between 2001-2008, she wrote articles, organized and promoted concerts, and worked on a book...

Lil' Ed & the Blues Imperials were among the premiere party bands to come out of Chicago during the '70s and '80s. Often compared to Elmore James and Hound Dog Taylor, fiery, flamboyant slide guitarist Lil' Ed Williams and his group have continued to play dedicated, rough-edged, and hard-rocking dance music, establishing an international reputation that has lasted into the new millennium... Following its third album, the group went on hiatus for a few years, during which Lil' Ed Williams released two albums on Earwig, 1996's Keep on Walkin' with Dave Weld and 1998's Who's Been Talking with Willie Kent. In 1999 the band reconvened and released Get Wild...
Singing Slide 3:07
Too Late (J.B. Hutto) 4:52
The Cannonball (Lil' Ed Williams) 3:32
from Get Wild 1999
After disbanding his group to take time off to clean up his life, Lil' Ed re-formed the Blues Imperials for this 1999 entry, his first for Alligator since What You See Is What You Get. The good news is that the time off had totally reinvigorated Ed's playing, singing, and songwriting, as he ultimately turned in a great batch of originals infused with blistering raw energy. The only non-originals out of the 14 tracks assembled here are nice takes on "Too Late" and "Pet Cream Man," both tunes written by Ed's uncle and principal inspiration, the late J.B. Hutto. Call this a comeback album if you must, but if great, raw Chicago blues is your thing, consider this one great album, period.

One of the most prominent figures in late 20th century blues, singer/multi-instrumentalist Taj Mahal played an enormous role in revitalizing and preserving traditional acoustic blues. Not content to stay within that realm, Mahal soon broadened his approach, taking a musicologist's interest in a multitude of folk and roots music from around the world -- reggae and other Caribbean folk, jazz, gospel, R&B, zydeco, various West African styles, Latin, even Hawaiian...
Taj Mahal
The Calypsonians 6:28
Sacred Island (Moku La'a) 5:15
The New Hula Blues 4:44
Sacred Island is an album by the American blues/world artist Taj Mahal and the Hawaiian music group the Hula Blues Band, released in 1998. The album peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Blues Albums chart... The Edmonton Journal wrote that "the sounds of tenor, baritone, and Liliu ukuleles, Hawaiian steel guitar, pan pipes and slack-key guitars combine with the main man's National dobro and harmonica to create a wonderful musical trip thru the islands." The Dayton Daily News thought that "a gentle Calypso backbeat snakes its way through the project, creating a warm, laid-back, breezy feel." The San Diego Union-Tribune noted "the shock of hearing [the] first song: 'The New Calypsonians' sounds a bit like a gruff-voiced Mose Allison singing reggae at Don Ho's lounge."...

... ‘Little’ Mack Simmons was one of the stalwarts of the Chicago club scene; he taught himself harmonica as a youngster and in the early 50s occasionally worked with bluesmen on the St. Louis, Missouri, club circuit, before settling in Chicago in 1954. Since the late 60s he recorded for many small local labels, and sometimes larger companies such as Checker. In 1967 he received a three-year prison sentence for a drugs offence. He ran his own label recording studio and club from time to time and recorded blues, gospel (he was known for a time as Reverend Mac Simmons) and soul...
Trouble No More (Muddy Waters) 5:46
Fever (Eddie Cooley / John Davenport) 4:56
All Around the World (Titus Turner) 4:51
from Somewhere On Down The Line / Rec. July 19, 1997 & July 21, 1997 (1999)
While there's little startling about this 1999 collection of predominantly acoustic covers from the Chicago harpist/vocalist, the band and Simmons consistently find a low-key groove that's intoxicating. Simmons sings with easy authority, a sort of less lascivious Sonny Boy Williamson, and his band supports him with an effervescent, entirely unpretentious upbeat blues that leaps out of the speakers. Even warhorses like Little Willie John's "Fever" (which features an absolutely mind-melting piano solo from someone named Tyler Yarema) and Little Milton's "All Around the World," both of which have been covered to death, find unexpectedly fresh interpretations here. With leisurely, moving vocals that deliver emotionally without unnecessary effort, Simmons dances with the melodies, and his inspired performance makes this a successful album. The primarily acoustic format keeps the sound airy and uncluttered, as Simmons shifts from blues to gospel to R&B with deceptive ease...

Updating the rural blues tradition for the modern era, Guy Davis was among the most prominent ambassadors of African-American art and culture of his generation, additionally winning great acclaim for his work in the theater... though raised in the city, Davis was frequently regaled with stories of Southern country life as a child, and over time became so enamored of the music of Blind Willie McTell, Skip James, Mississippi John Hurt, and others that he taught himself guitar. As a 13-year-old experiencing his first Buddy Guy concert, Davis' own fate as a bluesman was sealed, especially after he learned his distinctive fingerpicking style from a nine-fingered guitarist he met on a train traveling from Boston to New York some years later...
I Got the Power (Guy Davis) 4:53
When You Got a Good Friend (Robert Johnson / Traditional) 3:15
Thanksgiving Day (Guy Davis) 2:46
From the infectious opening notes of "Georgia Jelly Roll" through the stomping sounds of the closing "New Shoes," Call Down the Thunder is honest, raw, from-the-gut blues music, imbued with the joy of a gospel meeting. Guy Davis is a master storyteller, penning ten of the 13 songs included here. His slide playing is exceptional and at times very reminiscent of Robert Johnson.

Since releasing the aptly titled Believe It! for Blind Pig in 1989, Chicago-based guitarist and singer/songwriter Joanna Connor has revealed herself as a virtuoso stylist in modern electric blues, R&B, and blues-rock. Her take-no-prisoners playing style joins fiery single-string runs to dazzling, rough-and-ready slide guitar pyrotechnics in an approach at once incendiary and deeply soulful...
Never Been Rocked Enough (Delbert McClinton / Troy Seals)
Rock & Roll Gypsy:
Fire (Jimi Hendrix) 2:52
Connor is also an accomplished vocalist and songwriter. 1996's Big Girl Blues drew accolades for its raw, house-rocking approach... moved to Worcester, Massachusetts. She benefitted from her mother's huge collection of blues and jazz recordings, and was taken to see musicians like Taj Mahal, Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder, and Buddy Guy in concert. She got her first guitar at age seven and devoted herself to blues and roots rock. At 16, she began singing in Worcester-area bands .. Her 1989 debut for the Blind Pig label, Believe It! got her out of Chicago clubs and into clubs and festivals around the U.S., Canada, and Europe. From the beginning, Connor proved herself a road warrior, touring on her own, in package revues, and as a hired gun with other artists. 1992's Fight registered on the blues charts in several countries. 1993's Living on the Road and Rock and Roll Gypsy (1995) were cross-licensed by Germany's Ruf Records label; they cemented her reputation as a headliner and radio staple across the continent...

Jimmie Vaughan is a Texas blues guitarist responsible for opening up the national market for roadhouse blues and R&B during the late 20th century. With his tough, lean style, he co-led the Fabulous Thunderbirds with vocalist Kim Wilson between 1979 and 1987. In 1990, he and younger brother Stevie Ray Vaughan cut Family Style. He launched his solo career with 1994's Strange Pleasure...
Don't Cha Know (Jimmie Vaughan) 4:20
Two Wings (Dr. John / Mac Rebennack / Jimmie Vaughan) 4:25
Just Like Putty (Paul Ray / Jimmie Vaughan) 4:07
Jimmie creates a distinctive blend of soul-inflected blues-rock. His voice is cool and earnest, while his guitar-playing is tastefully reserved and sharp; underpinning and accentuating the songs with trebly licks not dissimilar to Lightnin Hopkins or Albert Collins. His poised, easy sound is filled out by mainstays such as Bill Willis, who fills in the bass on the Hammond pedals, and a soulful harmony of male backing vocals... Strange Pleasure is a creative and textured solo-debut, full of feeling and allowing Jimmie to explore a surprisingly versatile range of moods and good-vibes...

2012-2002

With a naturally expressive voice that has drawn comparisons to greats like Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald, Texas-based singer and songwriter Ruthie Foster has a wide palette of American song forms -- gospel and blues to jazz, folk, and soul -- and her live performances are powerfully transfiguring...
Long Time Gone (David Crosby) 5:14
This Time (David Hidalgo / Louis Perez / Louie Pérez) 4:48
Everlasting Light (Dan Auerbach / Patrick Carney) 3:33
from Let It Burn 2012
One of the gospel-blues scene's best-kept secrets for over a decade, Texan singer/songwriter Ruthie Foster finally achieved some long-overdue mainstream recognition when her 2009 sixth studio effort, The Truth According to Ruthie Foster, picked up a Grammy nomination. By putting down the guitar and concentrating entirely on her vocals for the first time in her career, her follow-up, Let It Burn, suggests she means business. It's a wise move, as her impassioned, soulful tones have always been her main selling point, and backed by an impressive array of musicians, including the Meters' rhythm section and legendary gospel act the Blind Boys of Alabama, they're allowed the freedom to showcase their versatility... But whichever era Foster picks and chooses from, Let It Burn always feels utterly timeless.

Tommy Castro is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, and bandleader. His muscular brand of roots music indulges electric and jump blues, funky R&B-inflected rockers, and searing soul-drenched ballads. An incendiary lead guitarist and showman, he often plays more than 200 dates a year...
Voodoo Spell feat. Michael Burks 10:02
from Tommy Castro Presents The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue--Live! 2011
A direct descendant from the traveling bundled artist packages of the '60s right down to its retro "hatch show"-styled cover art, Tommy Castro and his band play host to a relatively diverse assortment of high-energy blues and soul acts. The concept originated on the yearly Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise where such musical collaborations are typical. Castro's concept was to take that concept on the road, resulting in this dozen-track live album cherrypicked from various tour stops. It's a rollicking, very plugged-in affair... Everyone is at the top of their game with an electricity and vein-popping excitement that can only be generated when musicians feed off each other live...

Blues guitarist Albert Castiglia was born in New York on August 12, 1969. Five years later his parents moved to Miami, where Castiglia began learning guitar. By the age of 12, he began playing local gigs and did so consistently throughout high school. Following completion of his college education, Castiglia worked as a social service investigator while playing gigs at night and on weekends around South Florida. In 1990 he joined Miami Blues Authority, and was the group's lead guitarist and vocalist for over seven years. After an audition with Chicago blues harp legend Junior Wells in 1997, Castiglia become the permanent lead guitarist for Wells' Hoodoo Man's Band. Following Junior's death in 1998, the band stayed together long enough to open shows for blues belter Sandra Hall. In 2001 Castiglia began writing his own material with the help of Graham Drout, guitarist and vocalist with the Miami-based band Iko Iko...
Cadillac Assembly Line (Sir Mack Rice) 5:01
Mojo 305 (Albert Castiglia / Steven Gaskell / Jerome Mascaro) 3:58
Murderin' Blues (Robert Nighthawk) 5:25
from Keepin' On 2010
Albert Castiglia has been making his living as a bluesman for 20 years, coming to prominence as lead guitarist for the legendary Junior Wells. He's played with a who's who of blues greats in his career and stepped out on his own in 2002 with Burn, an album that got universal raves. There's no doubting Castiglia's power as a guitarist... Critics often compare Castiglia's singing to Van Morrison, and maybe there was a bit of Van the Man in his vocal style years back, but on Keepin On he has his own signature style, a combination of urban grit and smooth, soulful crooning. Like Robert Cray, Castiglia combines hardcore blues with soul, rock, and country flavors for a sound that will appeal to rockers and blues purists alike.

"Hymn for 2020"

Experimental trio whose music spans noisy improvisational rock, folky meditations, and more. Spanning noisy improvisational rock, folky meditations, and more, Magik Markers make the most of their stream-of-consciousness approach.

Magik Markers - 2020Hymn for 2020
Magik Markers began with an explosion of noisy improvisational rock in the 2000s and then, like a comet, resurfaced occasionally with a long tail of works that gradually refined their music. As the years between releases grew, so did the band's ability to combine their established and newfound skills in ways that sounded fresh and timeless. This is especially true of 2020, an album that took four years to make and appeared seven years after Surrender to the Fantasy. Though it ignores the trends that sprang up during Magik Markers' absence, its mix of delicate folk-pop, clattering rock, and droning experimental pieces captures the fragmented and challenging feel of its namesake year...

Cartoon supergroup, led by Damon Albarn, who blended Brit-pop and hip-hop while featuring a revolving all-star cast. Gorillaz began as something of a lark for Damon Albarn, a way for the singer/songwriter to explore music his Brit-pop band Blur otherwise couldn't make, but the "virtual band" he conceived with artist Jamie Hewlett in the twilight years of the 20th century turned into his main gig in the new millennium.

Gorillaz - Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez /  Strange Timez feat. Robert Smith
Damon Albarn launched Gorillaz's Song Machine at the dawn of 2020, planning to release one new song a month, then rounding up the results as an almanac at the end of the year. Despite the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Albarn managed to more or less stick to his schedule, issuing a new song a month until the October release of Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez... pull the album away from the realm of solipsism, suggesting that even when the world is largely isolated from itself, there is still the common language of music that binds us all.

Vibrant dance-rock duo hailing from Salt Lake City, Utah. The members of the vibrant dance-rock duo I Dont Know How But They Found Me (sometimes shortened to IDKHow or IDK) knew each other for years before they formed in secret in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2016.
Shrouded in mystery upon the release of their first EP in 2018, Salt Lake City duo I Don't Know How But They Found Me (or iDKHOW) pulled back the curtain to step into the spotlight for their bombastic full-length debut, Razzmatazz. An explosive fusion of alternative rock, pop savvy, and nostalgic funk swagger, the set strikes an infectious balance between the angular grooves of early-aughts ringmasters like the Killers and Franz Ferdinand and '60s glam gods like David Bowie and Marc Bolan. The results are fun, sexy, and absolutely catchy, aligning with output by contemporaries such as Joywave and the 1975. From the start, primary members Dallon Weekes and Ryan Seaman lay their inspirations right on the table, tapping into the funkier sides of Bowie and Peter Gabriel for "Leave Me Alone," which struts with elastic bass, hand claps, and a conviction that establishes Weekes as a consummate showman in the making...

Hushed, Baroque, enigmatic indie pop from a trio formed by members of Cross Record and Shearwater. A Lone Star State trio featuring Shearwater's Jonathan Meiburg and Cross Record's Emily Cross and Dan Duszynski, Loma emerged in 2018 with an eponymous debut that paired overcast post-rock with bucolic and baroque indie pop.
Loma - Don't Shy Away / Half Silences
The sophomore full-length effort from the American indie rock trio featuring Shearwater's Jonathan Meiburg and Cross Record's Emily Cross and Dan Duszynski, Don't Shy Away sees Loma deliver an impressive and impressionistic set of songs that combine elemental dream pop and dark folktronica... "Half Silence" follows suit, but swaps out the palliative pulse of its predecessor with an icy motorik cadence that yields a similar cinematic sweep... Inward-looking, mysterious, and awash in found sounds, bucolic electronics, and naturalistic imagery, Don't Shy Away is both inexplicable and compelling, and is easily Loma's most rewarding outing to date.

The primary outlet for the melancholy wanderings of cryptic yet revered lo-fi singer/songwriter John Darnielle. The Mountain Goats are, for all practical purposes, the endlessly clever and prolific John Darnielle and the cast of musicians he surrounds himself with, which means that while the soundscape may change from project to project, the overall tone and feel of Darnielle's work remains remarkably consistent.
The Mountain Goats - Getting Into Knives / Getting Into Knives
...Getting into Knives may well be the best-crafted and most musically satisfying album the Mountain Goats have released to date. Cut in Memphis in March 2020, it finds John Darnielle and his core trio -- Peter Hughes on bass, Matt Douglas on keyboards, woodwinds, and guitars, and Jon Wurster on drums -- playing with the sure-footed interplay of a crack jazz band, even as the melodies are rooted in pop. The easy but vital nuance of the arrangements is reinforced by the welcome interludes from the guest musicians (including Charles Hodges of the legendary Hi Records house band on organ), and Darnielle has learned how to sing with an authority that matches the skill set of the band and gives his characters life and personality...

Alternative folk band with an ever-revolving lineup, but with Kate Stables at its core. Alternative-folk act This Is the Kit's rise to recognition was a slow and steady one. The name is essentially an alias for British musician Kate Stables who, along with a cast of both regular and revolving contributors, has been creating a unique style of literate, rhythmic indie folk since the mid-2000s.
This Is the Kit - Off Off OnThis Is What You Did
...Off Off On, This Is the Kit's fifth album overall, finds Stables and her crew working alongside New York-based producer Josh Kaufman (Bonny Light Horseman, Muzz) on another warmly literate and subtly complex collection, essentially picking up where its predecessor left off. Largely written during a 2019 tour with the National, there is an undercurrent of restlessness in this material, with Stables' observations of life in motion complimented by skittering percussion, agile fingerpicking, and colorful horn lines dancing across the stereo field... Although This Is the Kit is ultimately Stables' project, regular collaborators like bassist/singer Rozi Plain, guitarist Neil Smith, and drummer Jamie Whitby-Coles once again bring her detailed music into focus, locking in together like a single organism while her husband, multi-instrumentalist Jesse D. Vernon, further paints the canvas in earthy hues. In spite of its musical intricacy, This Is the Kit remains a relatable portal into the human experience and Off Off On is as appealing as anything Stables has ever released.

Singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist from Vermont with a keen ear for both traditional and avant folk music. A contemporary folk musician specializing in guitar, fiddle, and banjo, Sam Amidon is known for both his original songs and his often-ambitious updates of traditional folk tunes.
Sam Amidon - Sam Amidon / Pretty Polly
An unofficial companion album of sorts to 2017's The Following Mountain, which consisted entirely of Amidon originals, Sam Amidon (2020) returns some of the same key contributors -- multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily, drummer Chris Vatalaro, and saxophonist Sam Gendel -- for a full set of covers. As such, it's reminiscent of earlier works including his Nonesuch label debut, the folk-covers album Bright Sunny South (2013), but this time with a generally more ambitious design. While the likewise expansive The Following Mountain was produced by seasoned producer/composer/sideman Leo Abrahams, Amidon takes on the role himself here for the first time since his solo debut nearly 20 years prior... While the album focuses mostly on traditional song, including an updated, saxophone-streaked version of the tragic "Pretty Polly," some more-modern, attributed works get the Amidon touch, as well...

Alternative singer/songwriter who has displayed enviable verbal skills to match her intricate arrangements and superb musicianship. Singer and songwriter Laura Veirs blends the poetic sensibilities of contemporary folk music with the more ambitious melodic frameworks of indie rock.
Laura Veirs - My Echo / Burn Too Bright
...Laura says: "My Echo is “my songs knew I was getting divorced before I did" album. My conscious mind was trying as hard as I could to keep my family together but my subconscious mind was working on the difficult struggles in my marital life. I was part of a “Secret Poetry Group”that met and wrote poems monthly for a year during the writing of this record. Many of my poems turned into songs for this album. By the time the album was being mixed last fall, my ex-husband/producer Tucker Martine and I had decided to go our separate ways. We were a great musical team for many years but we struggled to be compatible in our marriage and family life and that struggle is reflected in this album. In this new batch of songs I imagine escaping from some sort of prison or cage. Advancing age, the confines of domesticity, our oppressive government and the threat of the apocalypse permeate these songs. In these songs my heart craves certainty and permanence but none is to be found. It’s an album about disintegration. It reveals my artist’s intuition at work."

Songwriter and vocalist who helped birth alt-country with Uncle Tupelo before becoming an indie rock icon as the leader of Wilco. Of the artists who rose to prominence as part of the alt-country scene of the '80s and '90s, none would have a higher profile or create a more eclectic body of work than Jeff Tweedy.
It has been clear from the start that Wilco was first and foremost Jeff Tweedy's vehicle, one where he's given his collaborators plenty of space to show off their talents but ultimately in the service of his songs and his musical vision.. 2020's Love Is the King feels like a blend of the themes and approach of Warm and Warmer with the more experimental bent of Sukierae, the 2014 album Jeff made with his son Spencer Tweedy on drums under the group name Tweedy. Love Is the King is the unofficial second Tweedy album, as Jeff and Spencer take on all the instrumental duties, while Spencer's brother Sammy contributes the occasional harmony vocal...

The alias of producer Darren Cunningham, Actress released some of the least predictable categorization-defying electronic dance music of the 2000s.
Actress - Karma & Desire / Diamond X
Darren Cunningham broke from his solitude by collaborating with the London Symphony Orchestra for LAGEOS, and doesn't return to his previous state for his follow-up Actress LP, Karma & Desire...  Tracks unloading Actress trademarks like clinking and swarming FX ("Diamond X") and fitful kick-drum jabs ("Leaves Against the Sky") are more alluring and welcoming than usual. Six years after he etched a headstone for music, this enigma has made the easiest point of entry into his catalog.

John Frusciante has achieved widespread fame, mainly through his tenures as the guitarist for Red Hot Chili Peppers, as well as a fervent cult audience for his more challenging, experimental solo works. Amalgamating a wide range of influences, from Hendrix and prog rock to punk and new wave, and eventually incorporating R&B, hip-hop, and electronic music.
John Frusciante - MayaUsbrup Pensul
John Frusciante has long acknowledged techno and rave culture as a major interest and a significant influence on his singular, sometimes confounding solo career, but it wasn't until the 2010s that the off-again, on-again Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist began releasing purely instrumental electronic music... Maya is Frusciante's second album released in 2020, following a Trickfinger set titled She Smiles Because She Presses the Button. Titled after his feline companion of 15 years who had passed away, Maya is credited to Frusciante's given name, which is fitting as it has more personality than much of his Trickfinger work, even if the album lacks his knotty guitar playing or falsetto vocals... Tracks like "Usbrup Pensul" are filled with clattering, stuttering drums and rave stabs... Each of the tracks took a while to prepare, as Frusciante would fine-tune synth patches and arrange breakbeats, but the actual recordings were bashed out pretty quickly, and they all maintain that sense of elaborately designed spontaneity, making it easily the artist's most successful electronic work.

This Ty Segall side project builds on a foundation of early-'70s proto-metal psychedelia and jammy guitar heaviness. Living up to their name, Fuzz take influence from heavy, caustic, fuzz pedal-worshiping '60s proto-metal and psychedelic acts like the Groundhogs, Jimi Hendrix, and Blue Cheer.
Fuzz - III / Time Collapse
After two albums where Fuzz's dynamic duo of Ty Segall and Charles Moothart set the controls to the heart of the late '60s/early '70s in a (mostly successful) quest to recapture the vital moment in history when garage rock met acid rock and got super heavy, they've truly hit the bull's-eye with III. With new bassist Chad Ubovich on board, the group have made a record that not only brings to mind early Black Sabbath or Blue Cheer but also stands proudly next to them like a conquering hero. With the help of Steve Albini's no-frills recording job and a general lack of overdubs, reverb, and frills, the sound is immediate and powerful. Segall's drums are a force of nature, Ubovich's bass thuds when it needs to, then jousts with the guitar melodically when that's required, and Moothart's guitar is an overdriven thing of ugly beauty. He conjures up molten riffs that tumble out of the speakers, doles out shards of overblown noise, unleashes snaky solos, and basically makes claim to a seat at the table of guitar heroes circa 2020...

Pallbearer channel the brutal, straight-ahead heaviness of classic doom into their bleak, no-frills sound. Little Rock, Arkansas' Pallbearer are a doom metal quartet whose penchant for extreme, monstrously thick heaviness has drawn fans from across the globe.
Forgotten Days, produced by Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Earth), will put trepidations to rest. The album's primary lyric themes are time's passage, with heavy yet intimate reflections on family, loss, and healing framed by music at once massively heavy and heartfelt... Closer "Caledonia" is an outlier. Using melodic doom to frame Campbell's sublime vocal, the guitar harmonies are stitched inside a goth metal frame that meets prog head on. Forgotten Days is the album that will likely unite all Pallbearer fans...

Guitar virtuoso whose trademark technique has redefined what it means to play the instrument. American guitarist and composer Kaki King has spent her career redefining what it means to play the guitar. Her technical mastery is combined with an unquenchable desire to expand her instrument's physical and sonic boundaries.
Kaki King - Modern YesterdaysForms of Light and Death (Arr. Úlfur Hansson)
Kaki King's Modern Yesterdays is the guitar magician's first studio outing in five years, and her debut for Cantaloupe Music... Modern Yesterdays offers abundant articulations of post-classical, jazz, folk, and blues motifs, and electro-acoustic influences...  Modern Yesterdays was recorded in Brooklyn with sound designer Chloe Alexandra Thompson and Arjan Miranda as co-producers. The album title deliberately reflects the global COVID-19 pandemic's before and after, made more poignant as King and her co-producers contracted the virus despite being quarantined.... Closer "Forms of Light and Death" was arranged by Icelandic composer and synthesist Úlfur Hansson, and it's the only track here to feature King on electric slide guitar. It touches on Eastern modes and blues forms with slippery electronics that unobtrusively underscore and highlight each weighty line. Even by King's standards, Modern Yesterdays is remarkable: It extends the guitar's role in contemporary music to one of nearly limitless possibility without leaving the realm of deeply pleasurable listening.

The Chicago-born, Brooklyn-based vibraphonist Joel Ross is a sophisticated jazz performer with a sound steeped in the post-bop tradition.
The sophomore album from Joel Ross, 2020's Who Are You? showcases the Chicago-born, Brooklyn-based vibraphonist's expansive post-bop jazz. The record follows his critically acclaimed debut, 2019's Kingmaker, and again finds him engaging in warm long-form interplay with his distinctive sextet. Joining Ross are pianist Jeremy Corren, saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, and drummer Jeremy Dutton -- bandmates who all played on Kingmaker. Added to the ensemble this time are bassist Kanoa Mendenhall and harpist Brandee Younger. The addition of Younger is an especially interesting choice. Informed by jazz harp pioneers like Alice Coltrane and Dorothy Ashby, she brings an unusual texture to the ensemble. Her presence also means Ross' group has four chordal instruments (vibes, piano, bass, and harp) interacting at any given time. There's an impressionistic sound to many of Ross' songs, as on the opening "Dream." A wave-like composition, it brings to mind the work of artists like pianist Keith Jarrett and vibraphonist Wolfgang Lackerschmid...

Mexican jazz pioneer with a career stretching over six decades and 40 albums. Jazz drummer Tino Contreras is one of Mexico's national cultural treasures. He is an award-winning composer, arranger, and bandleader, whose percussion-centric approach is almost always melody-based with tempos usually suitable for dancing.
While in Tokyo in 2018, musical impresario and Brownswood Recordings boss Gilles Peterson found and purchased a copy of Tino Contreras' 1979 classic Musica Infinita. The following year in Mexico City, he was introduced to Contreras through record collector and musician Carlos Icaza. Peterson licensed Musica Infinita to inaugurate his reissue label, Arc Records. He also signed the iconic Mexican musician to cut a new album for Brownswood. With Icaza producing, the nonagenarian Contreras went straight to work and completed La Noche de los Dioses with an octet that included his nephew Valentino on bass and his producer on pre-Hispanic percussion and Arp Harmonic synths... La Noche de los Dioses displays the hallmark qualities Contreras has developed over 75 years. His compositions meld music from various jazz periods -- from swing and hard bop to modal and vanguard -- with gritty lounge blues, exotica, and folk musics from several nations... "Al Amanecer" is a humid collision between modern son -- with wild piano montunos from Reyes -- exotica, spacy post-bop, and grimy electric guitar blues... At 96, Contreras remains a vitally creative musician and explorer; the basket of traditions and sounds he creates and weaves are nothing less than astonishing and almost shamanic in their emotional and spiritual power.

Powerful blues singer whose award-winning recordings run the gamut from electric blues to soul and Americana. The daughter of renowned Texas blues guitarist Johnny Copeland, award-winning blues singer Shemekia Copeland began making a splash in her own right before she was even out of her teens.
Given the vitally important place the blues holds in the history of black culture, it's surprising (and perhaps a bit disappointing) that so many contemporary blues artists don't deal with more political and social issues in their songs. But Shemekia Copeland is not one of those performers, and her 2020 album, Uncivil War, finds her singing about America's racial and cultural divide with heart, soul, and compassion... Shemekia Copeland is one of the best singers in contemporary blues, not just for her voice but for her courage to use it to say something about American culture, and Uncivil War shows good times and a social conscience can co-exist on the same LP.
