2008-1997

An acclaimed, genre-bending jazz trio, the Bad Plus play a maverick combination of originals and covers that blur the line between post-bop jazz, and instrumental rock. Formed in 1990, the group originally featured longtime friends, pianist Ethan Iverson, bassist Reid Anderson, and drummer David King...

Lithium (Kurt Cobain) 4:48
Comfortably Numb (David Gilmour / Roger Waters) 6:43
from For All I Care 2008
That the Bad Plus have recorded pop covers since their inception as a piano/bass/drums trio is a given in their M.O. The Minnesota-based trio has consistently added tunes by Blondie, Queen, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Ornette Coleman, and Burt Bacharach to their albums -- in addition to their own compositions -- as they've gone about reinventing the piano trio sound and dynamic in jazz (they have become the loudest, most hard rocking acoustic trio in the music's history). Some critics have accused them of camp, but this is simply a pronouncement of ignorance and prejudicial conservative and "preservationist" paranoia... For All I Care also marks their first recording entirely comprised of covers. The songs range from tunes by Nirvana (who they've covered before), Wilco, and Pink Floyd to Milton Babbitt, Igor Stravinsky, Yes, the Flaming Lips, and Gyorgy Ligeti, to Heart, Roger Miller, and the Bee Gees. There isn't an original on the set. Another first for the trio on For All I Care is the addition of Minneapolis rock vocalist Wendy Lewis. Perhaps the most compelling, shocking, and wonderful thing about this collaboration is how much Lewis' presence becomes part of the trio's landscape...  This is one of the most compelling releases yet by one of the new jazz's finest bands to emerge in the 21st century.

Since making his full-length leader debut with 1998's Électronique Noire, Norway's Eivind Aarset has established himself as an exploratory guitarist, composer, producer, and sound designer. His unique musical vision absorbs and reflects influences from many musical genres and approaches. Aarset's attention to detail and careful craftsmanship have resulted in recontextualizing the role of the guitar in modern creative music as evidenced by 2007's Sonic Codex and 2012's Dream Logic...
Sign Of Seven / Bass clarinet – Hans Ulrik / Baritone guitar & celesta – Audun Erlien 6:26
Black Noise/White Silence / Electric bass – Marius Reksjø 3:06
from Sonic Codex 2007
This fourth solo album Sonic Codex from Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset incorporates concepts from his earlier albums, restates, elaborates and reinforces them to generate a genuine masterpiece, that might be a defining moment in both Aarset’s career and the history of Jazzland. Sonic Codex puts forward rules of engagement that Aarset collaborate with the audience, and very deliberately quotes and redefines the musicality that made up his previous three albums, “Electronique Noire”, “Light Extracts”, and “Connected”, yet also points his way forward: it is an innovative present that simultaneously summarizes the past, and predicts the future.

Dave Douglas is among the most original trumpeters and composers of his generation. His stylistic range is broad yet unaffected, his music reflects a personal aesthetic with a panoply of interests, and he explicitly cites such diverse influences as Igor Stravinsky, Stevie Wonder, and John Coltrane (among many others)...
Culture Wars (Dave Douglas) 12:46
Blues to Steve Lacy (Dave Douglas) 5:55
...Meaning and Mystery showcases the band -- Douglas on trumpet, Uri Caine on Fender Rhodes, bassist James Genus, and drummer Clarence Penn -- with its first personnel change as tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin replaces Chris Potter, whose own star is rising and is too busy to maintain a constant presence in the group. McCaslin, who is less well known, is no less a player. His voice on the horn is unique, and his phrasing complex and songlike... The standout track here is "Culture Wars." Douglas has never made bones about Miles being a huge influence -- he even refers to it in the liner notes. Obviously, the quintet format echoes the great inconoclasts as well. But Douglas moves it into other areas. The open, relaxed, moody atmosphere of the cut begins slowly, reminding one -- perhaps because of Caine's Rhodes playing -- of Davis' In a Silent Way, particularly when the simple groove takes over. Genus' ostinato is infectious, chantlike, hypnotic... Meaning and Mystery is yet another album in the Douglas catalog that showcases his fine compositional and arrangement abilities, but more than this, it's the sound of a group in the process of continued restless development long after the bandmembers have found their collective voice.

2015-2005

Jazz bassist Ben Williams is a forward-thinking musician who crosses easily between straight-ahead, funk, and gospel-influenced jazz. A native of Washington, D.C., Williams graduated from the Duke Ellington School of Music before studying with renowned bassist Rodney Whitaker while earning a B.A. in jazz studies at Michigan State University. He is an in-demand sideman and has performed with a veritable who's who of jazz, including Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Mulgrew Miller, Terence Blanchard, and others...
Black Villain Music (Ben Williams) 4:27
Forecast (Ben Williams) 8:15
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana cover (Kurt Cobain / Dave Grohl / Krist Novoselic) 3:20
from Coming of Age 2015
Ben Williams' sophomore full-length album, 2015's Coming of Age, finds the adept bassist/composer delivering another sophisticated mix of post-bop, fusion, and contemporary R&B-infused jazz. The album follows up Williams' equally striking 2011 debut, State of Art, and showcases the winner of the 2009 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition's further development as a bandleader, composer, and improviser. Once again joining Williams is his longtime backing ensemble Sound Effect, featuring tenor and soprano saxophonist Marcus Strickland, guitarist Matthew Stevens, pianist and Fender Rhodes keyboardist Christian Sands, synth and Fender Rhodes keyboardist Masayuki "Big Yuki" Hirano, and drummer John Davis...

Up until the mid-2000s, guitarist Nels Cline was probably best-known for his work in the group Quartet Music and other projects in the jazz, rock, and avant-garde idioms, as well as for his general involvement in the West Coast's avant and improv scenes. During the '90s, Cline recorded a pair of duo outings with Thurston Moore and Devin Sarno before embarking on Interstellar Space Revisited: The Music of John Coltrane with drummer Gregg Bendian; he joined the latter's Interzone group while leading his own trio, the Nels Cline Singers. In 2004, Cline opened up a much larger audience for a jazz guitarist than is typical, joining the alt-country and experimental pop act Wilco...
Nels Cline Singers
Companion Piece (Nels Cline) 5:37
Respira (Nels Cline) 4:19
Seven Zed Heaven (Nels Cline) 11:15
from Macroscope 2014
Macroscope is the fifth offering from the Nels Cline Singers and another album that defies simple stylistic categories. Most people would hesitate to call this a rock album, but probably just as many (especially purist jazz snobs) would not consider it a jazz album either. Ultimately, who cares? The Nels Cline Singers make wonderful, adventurous music and Macroscope may be their most accessible album yet, but that doesn't mean it's for everyone. There are pretty melodies and some cool grooves that most listeners might enjoy, but there's also some serious dissonance and swirling clouds of effects that some people will love and some just won't. Nels' use of effects is pretty well known when he's playing electric, but new bass player Trevor Dunn isn't afraid of effects either and drummer Scott Amendola has been using loops, electronics, and processing for years, so the band often sounds like more than just a trio even when there are no guests present. You never know where a song might lead from where it begins... So while the Nels Cline Singers may have a new bass player and a new label, fortunately their sound has not changed. They're still making some of the most interesting, adventurous, genre-smashing music of the early 21st century. Guitar nerds need to check this out, but it's got wider appeal than that too.

Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner rose during the first decade of the new millennium as the go-to bassist for a multitude of forward-looking artists traversing electric jazz, punk, R&B, and hip-hop. His nimble, syncopated, groove-heavy basslines have propelled songs by Sa-Ra, Erykah Badu, Flying Lotus, and Kendrick Lamar, some of which have also featured his gentle and sweet vocals...
Tenfold (Stephen Bruner / Steven Ellison) 3:04
The Life Aquatic (Stephen Bruner) 2:36
Tron Song (Stephen Bruner / Steven Ellison) 2:34
from Apocalypse 2013
One of the many charms of Thundercat's first album, The Golden Age of Apocalypse, was the manner in which the supernaturally skilled bassist seemed to wing his way through songwriting -- stumbling upon ideas, going with the flow, goofing off -- and come up with brilliance. On his sharper, more focused second album, he works through anguish -- the loss of close friend and musical partner Austin Peralta -- with some staggeringly emotive and tightly composed content. There's less room for instrumentals and noodling, but even those moments are purposeful...

Whether playing solo, with a trio, a full-on electric band, or an orchestra, adventurous jazz pianist and composer Hiromi Uehara is as likely to meld post-bop and funk as she is pop and classical -- sometimes in the same composition...
Move (Hiromi) 8:34
Suite Escapism: Reality (Hiromi) 5:32
11:49 PM (Hiromi) 11:29
Move is Hiromi's second "Trio Project" recording with electric bassist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Phillips, and is a worthy follow-up to 2011's Voice. The pianist/composer defines the compositions on Move as mirroring an average day, starting with the title track, a choppy excursion that finds the trio connecting through a maze of twists and turns...

ALTER.NATION #62 on DEEZER

Sarah Caroline Olivia Sinclair, CBE, better known as Olivia Colman, is an English actress. Deemed a "national treasure", Colman is the recipient of numerous accolades, including an Academy Award, four BAFTA Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, four British Independent Film Awards, the Volpi Cup for Best Actress, and a BFI Fellowship.
Olivia Colman - Glory Box / Portishead from BBC Children In Need: Got It Covered
In an exclusive collaboration for BBC Children in Need, a whole host of stars have got together to record an entire album to raise money for this year’s appeal...
Each star has handpicked a song significant to them for the album.  Recorded at the legendary Rak and Abbey Road Studios in London, they each received expert guidance from Brit and Mercury award-winning record producers and songwriters, Guy Chambers and Jonathan Quarmby.

Alcest are a metal duo from Bagnols-sur-Cèze, France comprised of Neige (guitars, keyboards, vocals) and Winterhalter (drums). Their music has gradually shifted from black metal to shoegaze to post-metal, and finally to the integrated sound known as blackgaze. Intense melody, lush, swirling electronic textures, and sometimes screamed-sometimes cleanly sung vocals entwine in their mixes.
Alcest - Les Jardins de Minuit from Spiritual Instinct
When Alcest released Kodama in 2016, it stood apart from their previous catalog in exploring the "blackgaze" metal subgenre they'd created. It was darker, more aggressive, and had more pointed edges.... Spiritual Instinct, the band's debut for Nuclear Blast, builds on Kodama even as it reaches further outside the emotions expressed on it in order to transcend them. It explores dichotomies -- the divine and the primal, the raw and the refined, the hideous and the beautiful -- in a quest to reveal complexities at the heart of what humanity actually means. Opener "Les Jardins de Minuit" borrows a radically Gothic bassline from Joy Division before a single-string melody line, followed by doubled vocals, pave the way for blastbeats and powerful, strummed open chords. It's a swirl of gray and smoke that gallops along.

Ambient pop collective started as a recording experiment in an echoey hallway. Ambient pop collective Cigarettes After Sex grew out of an experimental sound project by songwriter Greg Gonzalez.
Cigarettes After Sex - You're the Only Good Thing In My Life from Cry
...The project of Texas native Greg Gonzalez, Cigarettes After Sex's noir-ish imagery and languid odes to romantic obsession made them seem like unlikely candidates for such contemporary pop culture peaks, but the song and subsequent 2017 debut album nonetheless found a very receptive audience... With the gently hissing surf-and-sun-baked limestone cliffs as their backdrop, he and bandmates Randall Miller (bass), Phillip Tubbs (keyboards), and Jacob Tomsky (drums) recorded nine gentle, often improvised pieces of music to which Gonzalez added lyrics at a later date. Cry is nothing if not cinematic and, as its creator has indicated, is indelibly linked to its place of origin. Listening to the opioid strains of "Don't Let Me Go" or "You're the Only Good Thing in My Life," it's easy to picture the lovelorn indie playboy gazing wistfully from a marbled balcony out into the sea's infinite expanse...

Violinist, singer, songwriter, and producer who combines R&B, hip-hop, folk, and experimental electronic music for the Stones Throw label.
Sudan Archives - Pelicans In The Summer from Athena
Nothing about Sudan Archives and Sink, Brittney Parks' self-written and self-produced Stones Throw EPs, sounded underdeveloped or uncertain. That they were filled with tunes akin to repeated epigrams and transportive moodscapes -- instead of traditionally-structured songs -- seemed like a deliberate artistic choice, not a deficiency. It's only after being weighed against the LP follow-up Athena that they come across as unripe. The previously solitary Parks opted here to work with a crew including James R. McCall IV, Will Archer, Rodaidh McDonald, Paul White, and Catherine Parks (her sister) among the dozen or so fellow producers and songwriters... and "Pelicans in the Summer," a pulsing/snaking song of deep affection...

Delivering her own brand of ambitious, grand-scale indie pop, Little Scream is the stage name of vocalist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Laurel Sprengelmeyer. Her music is at once lush and intimate, with a subdued approach informed by folk but with melodies that are drawn from indie pop and flashes of rock dynamics.
Little Scream - Switchblade from Speed Queen
Sometimes you have to spend some time away from home in order to see it as it really is. Laurel Sprengelmeyer, aka Little Scream, was born and raised in the United States before she settled in Canada and made a name for himself in the local indie music community... What she saw has become the foundation of the third Little Scream album, 2019's Speed Queen, a moody but beautifully crafted set of intelligent indie pop melodies matched to vocals that are graceful on first glance but speak of lives teetering on the brink if you're willing to take a closer look. The LP's title track speaks of the anxieties and desperation of a woman whose greatest wish is to have the means and stability to own her own washer and dryer, a simple dream that is painfully far from her reach...

Progressive jazz scientists who found a way to put a modern rock-oriented spin on jazz while still honoring its forward-thinking traditions.
The Bad Plus - Undersea Reflection from Activate Infinity
When the Bad Plus released Never Stop II in 2018, new pianist Orrin Evans had been in the group for less than a year. He's since logged thousands of miles with them, playing concert halls and bandstands across the globe. That makes Activate Infinity, their second album together, a much more integrated affair. Evans' decades of experience as a bandleader and inventive hard bop-inspired pianist lend immeasurably to the quirk and instinct of this trio...  Anderson's fluid soloing adds heft and imagination that Evans and King follow down an intricately constructed rabbit hole. Activate Infinity is a canny, wildly creative expression of the Bad Plus' collective persona; it's inspired, sophisticated, fresh, and a joy to encounter, time and again.

But the difference with Jeff Goldblum, who is releasing I Shouldn’t Be Telling You This one year after his debut and following a celebrated Glastonbury set this summer, might be that music came before the acting. Goldblum learnt piano growing up in Pittsburgh, and has played lounge gigs with the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra throughout his career. And musicianship courses through these classily rendered jazz standards.
Jeff Goldblum & the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra feat. Anna Calvi - Four On Six/Broken English  from I Shouldn't Be Telling You This
...Anna Calvi lends her lowest-register vibrato to the mash-up of Wes Montgomery’s “Four on Six” and Marianne Faithfull’s “Broken English”, which injects a rebellious splash of electric guitar. Sultry sweetness...

Prolific figure of the Great Plains' lo-fi D.I.Y. scene, and a heavy influence on Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst. Cited as a key influence by Conor Oberst (of Bright Eyes) and Beck, Omaha, Nebraska native and singer/songwriter Simon Joyner has been putting out delicate, intimate, mournful songs since the early '90s.
Simon Joyner - You Never Know from Pocket Moon
favorite musician's favorite musician. Consistently active and firmly independent since the early '90s, Joyner's influence is apparent in much more recognizable names like Bright Eyes, Kevin Morby, Angel Olsen, and other top-shelf artists occupying the space between Americana and lyrically focused songwriting. Pocket Moon continues Joyner's reshaping and refining of the elements that have given his work such impact since he began... The arrangements are simple, centered around vocals high in the mix. Throughout his discography, Joyner has consistently evoked Leonard Cohen's grim narratives, Dylan's flirtations with the surreal, and Townes Van Zandt's blue-collar storytelling. Combined with his own intricate lyrical perspectives, these influences are sharper on Pocket Moon... "You Never Know" runs through a series of everyday scenes that hold deeper emotional weight, stretching out with the same protracted lyrical rumination as Blonde on Blonde-era Dylan...

Energetic blend of Postcard pop, angular post-punk, and scrappy D.I.Y. punk by ex-members of Deerhunter and Carnivores.
Omni - Present Tense from Networker
After a jump to Sub Pop, Omni return with their most precise, most melodic, and best-sounding album yet. Like their first two, Networker was recorded in rural Georgia with Nathaniel Higgins and the sound is very similar. Frankie Broyles' guitar is a slashing, twisted ball of nerves, his drumming is spare and punchy, Philip Frobos' basslines are jabbing and melodic, and his vocals are cheerfully monotone and just barely poke their head out of the mix. What's different this time is everything is a little more jagged, the guitars have more restraint, and there are hints of avant-garde jazz and Television throughout...

Welsh songwriter Cate Le Bon's distinctive voice and smart arrangements manifested as a dark, looming take on psychedelic pop over the course of multiple critically acclaimed solo albums, side projects, and production for others.
Bradford James Cox is an American singer-songwriter and musician, best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the indie rock band Deerhunter. He also pursues a solo career under the moniker Atlas Sound.
Bradford Cox / Cate Le Bon - Canto! from Myths 004
Cate Le Bon's role as producer on Deerhunter's 2019 album Why Hasn't Everything Already Disappeared? can be heard in both the album's experimental tendencies and organic yet distant arrangements. Le Bon's own 2019 strike Reward had the same balance of strong songwriting and production that blurred curiosity and confusion. The creative friendship between Le Bon and Deerhunter's Bradford Cox takes new shapes on their collaborative EP Myths 004. At its most straightforward, the seven-song project sounds like what could be outtakes from either artist's 2019 album. Opening track "Canto!" features Cox in a dramatic double-tracked vocal melody in an arrangement decorated with strums of autoharp, dissonant guitar soloing, and heavy tandem drum kits...

CUP is an experimental art-pop project from creative and marital partners Nels Cline (Wilco) and Yuka C. Honda (Cibo Matto). An intriguing blend of electronic, folk, rock, and improvisations, the New York duo made their debut with the 2019 album, Spinning Creature.
CUPSpinning Creature from Spinning Creature
A project from musical and marital partners Nels Cline and Yuka C. Honda, CUP is a delightfully strange affair that merges exploratory improvisations for guitar, percussion, electronics, and voice with more structured art-pop songwriting... The two come together most soundly on the album's title cut, an artful gem of circular folktronic pop with a curiously inviting melody sung in unison. Pleasantly weird without being pretentious, CUP defy easy categorization and their debut pops like the collision of two beloved nonconformists.

The wispy vocals and guitar-picking style of Kayla Cohen evoke the gentler branch of the singer/songwriter era as well as centuries past.
Itasca - Only a Traveler from Spring
Following Open to Chance, her first album to feature a backing band, by three years, Spring is the fourth overall effort from Itasca, the alias of indie folk balladeer Kayla Cohen. Collaborative or not, all four records are populated by the songwriter's gentle, fingerpicked tunes and evocative lyrics, inspired here by her temporary relocating from L.A. to rural New Mexico to write. Specifically influenced by the region's diverse landscapes, highway apparitions, and the isolation she experienced, the resulting songs were recorded to tape with members of Gun Outfit and Sun Araw. On an album where everything is soft and bucolic, notable behind-the-scenes collaborators include James Elkington, who provided atmospheric string arrangements, and singer/songwriter Chris Cohen, who mixed the record...

Rhode Island indies who inject lustrous pop with doses of atmosphere and experimentalism.
Roz and the Rice Cakes
Slow Motion 2:22
Open Eyes 3:02
from Devotion
Led by Roz Raskin, a nimble vocalist who counts Gwen Stefani among her biggest influences (and she sounds a little like her, too), Rhode Island's Roz and the Rice Cakes released a debut in 2014 that introduced an intricate yet catchy experimental indie pop. Three years later, they strengthen those same qualities on their more vivid follow-up, Devotion. A track like "Open Eyes" starts with a muscular vocal melody over an exposed rhythm section that quickly establishes irregular time signatures before adding melodic, syncopated guitar. Despite lengthy instrumental passages, amorphous forms, and shifting rhythms, it lands like an uptempo dance-pop tune due to the band's ability to keep the big picture simple and accommodate tapping feet... Roz and the Rice Cakes apart from many pop, electronic, and indie rock acts -- as they juggle elements of all three.

London-based producer, songwriter, and DJ who alternates between house music, downtempo, and dubstep (as Nocturnal Sunshine).
Maya Jane Coles
Don't Leave 5:17
Waves & Whirlwinds 3:33
from Waves & Whirlwinds
Waves & Whirlwinds is a brief, EP-length follow-up to Maya Jane Coles' expansive double-album Take Flight, offering a similar blend of tech-house rhythms and pop instincts. Coles excels at producing sensuous dance tracks which float and bubble yet have a steady drive to them. "Don't Leave" has cloudy, pitch-shifted vocal fragments and loose guitars which levitate over a chunky breakbeat, punctuated by samples commanding the listener to "get yo hands up!"... Her vocals, again, are looped murmurings and intonations rather than coherent thoughts, expressing dark, vulnerable feelings rather than spelling them out.

Quirky, melodic rockers from Philadelphia who mix retro '60s psychedelia with a freewheeling indie aesthetic.
Dr. Dog
Golden Hind 3:12
Swampedelic Pop 3:42
from The Psychedelic Swamp
Back in 2001, The Psychedelic Swamp seemed an appropriate name for the debut cassette from psychedelic pranksters Dr. Dog, but some 15 years later the title seems even more fitting given that the band decided to revisit, rework, and re-jigger the entirety of the album to create a brand-new album for 2016. It's not quite right to say Dr. Dog cover themselves here. Rather, they reconnect with the ideas originally essayed in 2001 and approach those ideas with the skill and panache they've developed in the ensuing 15 years. Because Dr. Dog rely on texture and feel as much as they do songs, this isn't a bad idea at all: they're able to execute ideas they were only able to hint at when they were a young band...

Paris-based Cuban duo of twin sisters Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Dia who play an electro-tinged variety of Afro-Cuban and soul-influenced music.
Ibeyi
Deathless feat. Kamasi Washington (Lisa Kainde Diaz) 3:11
Transmission/Michaelion feat. Meshell Ndegeocello, (Maya Dagnino / Lisa Kainde Diaz / Claudia Rankine / Richard Russell) 6:30
from Ash
Ibeyi's stellar self-titled debut album was a flashpoint that steeped itself in brittle electro-drenched R&B and roots Yoruban percussion and openly engaged the saints of Santeria: its introduction was an invocation to Elegua (the gatekeeper between worlds) and the goddess of wind and storms in "Oya." On the French/Cuban sibling duo's sophomore effort, Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz address matters more corporeal and rooted in lived experience. The spiritual here is an inspirational tool for understanding and confronting suffering and injustice. Ash is an album directly affected by the tension of the times. Its songs address female empowerment, racial injustice, loneliness, and love in a brittle yet warm mix less frenetic than its predecessor. Singing again in mixed French, English, and Yoruba...
