Neneh Cherry forged a groundbreaking mix of genres in the late '80s that presaged the emergence of alternative rap and trip-hop, and through the 2010s she has gradually added to a discography filled with similarly unpredictable twists.
Neneh Cherry - Kong 4:24
Co-produced by Four Tet and Massive Attack’s 3D, “Kong” is anchored by low-gravity dub bass and a tinkling hi-hat; the effect is like a trip-hop song with the floor sucked out from under it. Cherry takes command through measured, rich vocals and empathic lyrics, a far cry from the boisterous, wisecracking 18-year-old on “Stop the War.” “Every nation seeks its friends in France and Italy/And all across the seven seas,” she sings in an ethereal upper register as an airy keyboard line fills in behind her, “And goddamn guns and guts and bitter love/Still put a hole in me.”

"TRENDING TROPICS" - THE MOST EXPECTED MUSICAL PROJECT IN 2018 - has been launched and is the new musical project led by the Puerto Rican musician and producer Eduardo Cabra "Visitante" Co-founder and musical Mastermind of the acclaimed band Calle13 with the Dominican singer-songwriter Vicente Garcia, both great winners in the last Latin Grammy awards .  Trending Tropics is composed of multi-instrumentalist musicians who come from various countries of the Caribbean, Cuba, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico .
Trending Tropics - Silicon Love 3:56
For his first project since Calle 13 went on hiatus in 2014, musical director and producer Eduardo "Visitante" Cabra and Dominican singer/songwriter Vicente García collaborate on Trending Tropics. Cabra's manifesto for the album is: "Music without a face in the age of the selfie." Its loosely linked songs probe the dominant ways that technology interacts with reality in 21st century culture, and in some cases supplants it...

Under the leadership of multi-instrumentalist Stuart Bogie, indie supergroup Superhuman Happiness were founded in Brooklyn in 2008. Their party-friendly sounds mixed composition, improvisation, and a groove-heavy sense of rhythm.
Superhuman Happiness - Bury Me (By Where My Baby Walks) 6:09
The indie collective's third full-length release, Beacon introduces Dia Luna as main vocalist and co-songwriter of a ten-piece Superhuman Happiness that also includes project leader Stuart Bogie and longtime members Eric Biondo and Sam Levin. Also featuring such noteworthy guests as saxophonist Colin Stetson and Arcade Fire's Richard Reed Parry, the album takes on a somewhat grayer hue than prior releases, particularly their effervescent debut...

One of the more captivating acts to come out of the alt-to-indie rock shift that dominated the late '90s and early 2000s, Minus the Bear pair tight, looped beats and mathy electric-guitar finger-tapping with sinewy verse melodies that reveal rousing choruses. Featuring members of Botch, Kill Sadie, and Sharks Keep Moving, the group emerged on Seattle's music scene in 2001, drawing from a wide array of musical styles that included post-punk, new wave, experimental rock, classic rock, and indie pop.
Minus the Bear - Fair Enough 4:16
Shortly after the release of 2017's Voids, Pacific Northwest indie rockers Minus the Bear announced that they would be shutting down operations, closing the gate on a very respectable 17-year run. Unveiling a proper bookend with the four-song Fair Enough (they emerged in 2001 with an EP, also released via Suicide Squeeze), the band delivers an elegant farewell that befits its understated oeuvre...

Soulful, dark-toned electronic pop from this Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter.  Working under the name Doe Paoro, Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Sonia Kreitzer blends elements of soul, R&B, dubstep, and dark-toned pop.
Doe Paoro - Cruelty of Nature 4:17
Making an about-face from the cinematic synth textures of her two previous outings, Los Angeles' Doe Paoro aims for a classic singer/songwriter approach on Soft Power, her soulful third album. The New York native, whose real name is Sonia Kreitzer, has been somewhat of a musical shape-shifter over the years, initially adopting elements of dubstep, experimental folk, electronica, and even Tibetan opera into her work...

Maesa Pullman and The Last Hurrah!
An international, ever-evolving retro, folk-rock, and experimental neo-psych project led by producer HP Gundersen. The Last Hurrah!! is an international pop/rock project whose constantly evolving lineup creates sounds drawing heavily from the music of the '60s and early '70s, though each recording is divergent and different from the last.
The Last Hurrah! - The Blues 4:55
Los Angeles marks the second album in a row -- the first was 2015's Mudflowers -- where Bergen's HP Gundersen's the Last Hurrah!! directly pay homage to the California city's musical heritage. The Vossajazz Festival commissioned him to prepare an evening of his musical discoveries and articulations from "over there" for a spring 2018 concert. For this date he brought back vocalist and lyricist Maesa Pullman, engineer/co-producer Jason Hiller -- who also plays bass and sings backup -- and multi-instrumentalist Kåre Sandvik. He also enlisted an international cast of studio aces who include Hammond organist John "JT" Thomas, saxophonist Jon Irabagon, drummer Bjorn Stæther, guitarist Henrik Paulsen, synthesist Sam Fossbakk, and violinist David Vogt. Where Mudflowers directly referenced L.A.'s historic country-rock scene of the last century wedded to elements of psychedelia, Los Angeles examines the colorful diversity of the sophisticated pop and production of the era -- think of the producers David Axelrod and Peter Asher with the Wrecking Crew and you get the idea...

Pianist Aaron Parks is a forward-thinking jazz musician who came to the public's attention during his time with trumpeter Terence Blanchard. He has, almost since the beginning of his recording career assumed an intuitive union of modern jazz, Eastern modalities and and atmospheric indie-rock.
Aaron Parks - Kid 7:21
In the decade between Invisible Cinema, his 2008 Blue Note debut, and Little Big, an intentional sequel, pianist and composer Aaron Parks has covered a lot of ground. He cut two leader dates for ECM (one solo, one trio), and two as a member of the active James Farm collective on Nonesuch. In addition, Parks has worked as a sideman too, playing live and on recordings with more than a dozen artists including Kurt Rosenwinkel, Yeahwon Shin, and Gilad Heckselman. Little Big is the self-titled debut from his electric quartet with guitarist Greg Tuohey, bassist David Ginyard, and drummer Tommy Crane.. On opener "Kid," a relentless piano figure contrasts with Tuohey's (Parks' foil throughout) electric guitar in direct tension. He follows the motif with a melody of his own. Driving it all is a skeletal but propulsive bassline and a series of tight, fleshy hi-hat and snare flourishes that push at the seams in roiling tension.

Chicago-based psychedelic/Krautrock enthusiasts Cave craft tight and funky free-form slabs of groove-heavy instrumental space rock that have earned them comparisons to everyone from Can to Stereolab to Funkadelic.
Cave - San' Yago 5:58
...“San’ Yago” announces itself with a clattering polyrhythmic beat that rolls through the song like an uneven tricycle. Percolating rhythms and a perky guitar line run alongside. Cooper Crain patiently works his electric piano into the gaps, applying warm tones like a mason working mortar into a stone wall. But as the tension slowly builds, a keening synth line approaches like a sunrise, and for a moment everyone’s playing feels fuller, and the song’s colors become more saturated. Eventually it recedes, leaving just the steady prickling of that guitar line scuttling around like a crab in its wake. We’re right back where we started, but the lowering of the tide has shifted the entire landscape.

Hard-rocking blues and boogie band from New York State, merging a classic sound with a modern attitude. Playing a lean, hard-grooving fusion of blues, R&B, and garage rock they call "boogie soul," Handsome Jack are a rock band from Lockport, New York, a city not far from Buffalo.
Handsome Jack - Keep On 3:55
Usually when a band goes from a quartet to a trio, that means their sound has thinned out just a bit. That's hardly the case with 2018's Everything's Gonna Be Alright, the second album for Alive Naturalsound Records from blues-rock combo Handsome Jack. With the departure of guitarist Phil Allport, lead singer and guitarist Jamison Passuite is now handling all the six-string chores for the group, accompanied by drummer Bennie Hayes (replacing previous timekeeper Chad Salmeri) and bassist Joe Verdonselli. However, while Handsome Jack's 2014 effort Do What Comes Naturally sounded loose but potent, with a clean and naturalistic vibe, Everything's Gonna Be Alright seems a bit more tricked up. These sessions find Passuite pushing the bluesy honk of his vocals a lot harder and the rhythm section adds a funkier undercurrent to the rhythms, and if the guitar work is more spartan, it's more decisive and pushed up higher in the mix...

Seattle-based hard rockers featuring members of the Missionary Position and Duff McKagan.
Walking Papers - Somebody Else 3:42
Packed with enough dirty guitar riffs to fill a smoky roadside bar, Walking Papers' second album, WP2, is another dose of no-nonsense rock & roll from the Seattle-based group. Recorded in early 2015 -- shortly after wrapping up touring behind their self-titled debut -- WP2 arrived three years later in 2018, due to bassist Duff McKagan's obligations with his other band, Guns N' Roses. Improving upon their first with polished production and a livelier vigor, WP2 is blues-drenched rock that fans of Queens of the Stone Age and Screaming Trees should enjoy...

Cleveland, Ohio band that balances hardcore intensity and deceptively sweet melodies. Cloud Nothings is the brainchild of Dylan Baldi, a Cleveland, Ohio native who was still in his teens when the buzz about his music started. On early releases such as 2011's self-titled debut album, the project was a one-man band specializing in lo-fi punk-pop.
Cloud Nothings - Offer An End 4:08
...In spirit, Last Building Burning marks a return to the self-immolating intensity of their 2012 breakthrough Attack on Memory, yet it’s even more jaded than that record was. On Life Without Sound, Baldi dared to offer something constructive, an earnest commentary on our divided world and the value of looking beyond our self-imposed bubbles, but it didn’t resonate. So here, he takes a more nihilistic approach, retreating back into his head and indulging his ugliest thoughts...

London trio following the post-punk traditions of prickly sounds and left-wing politics.
Shopping - Overtime 3:53
Shopping's brand of post-punk has only grown more potent with each album, and The Official Body is no exception. Rachel Aggs, Billy Easter, and Andrew Milk sound more assured than ever, and more danceable, too. Working with producer Edwyn Collins, they slow their often frantic pace down just enough to show off the formidable grooves on songs...

Alias of Benedic Lamdin, an eclectic producer who switched between samples and live instrumentation on releases for Ubiquity and Tru Thoughts.
Nostalgia 77
Cheney Lane 4:40
Green Blades of Grass 3:30
Seven Nation Army feat. Alice Russell 4:22
from The Garden 2005
The difference in spirit between Ben Lamdin's first and second Nostalgia 77 albums is tipped off by their titles. While 2004's Songs for My Funeral was fittingly downcast, The Garden is instead saturated with bright, vibrant energy. They're quite dissimilar in setup as well, with the debut's hip-hop roots exchanged for a combination of programming and actual live humans creating groove-driven jazz indebted to a range of recordings from the late '50s through the '70s...

Acclaimed guitarist's influence has ranged from progressive to indie rock.  Although Adrian Belew has played with some of rock's biggest names over the years (Frank Zappa, David Bowie, the Talking Heads, King Crimson, etc.), he remains one of the most underrated and woefully overlooked guitarists of recent times. Like all great guitarists, Belew has his own recognizable style/sound (one that admittedly tends to be quirky and off-the-wall at times), and is an incredibly versatile player, as he's always found a way to make his signature style fit into a wide variety of musical genres: hard rock, funk, new wave, experimental, Beatlesque pop, and more.
Adrian Belew
Ampersand (Adrian Belew) 4:23
Matchless Man (Adrian Belew) 2:32
Walk Around the World (Adrian Belew) 4:58
from Side One 2005
By 2005, it had been nearly eight years since Adrian Belew had unleashed an all-new solo studio effort. That's not to say he wasn't busy, though, as he toured/recorded with both King Crimson and the Bears during this time. And in the process, he became quite friendly with two of rock's top players -- Primus' Les Claypool and Tool's Danny Carey -- who happened to be major Belew fans. As a result, Belew invited the duo to play on several tracks on Side One...

Soporific Canadian country dream poppers, captured Americana imagination in the late-1980s & early-'90s. Canada's Cowboy Junkies' create a music grounded in traditional country, blues, and folk, filled with languid guitars and ethereal vocals courtesy of Margo Timmins.

One Soul Now (Michael Timmins) 4:54
Why This One (Michael Timmins) 3:47
My Wild Child (Michael Timmins) 3:52
from One Soul Now 2004
While it seems more common in the '80s, '90s, and beyond for a good band to remain intact for ten-plus years, they all face the same challenge: how does one continue to keep the music fresh and remain relevant? The Cowboy Junkies faced an uphill battle from the get-go, always living in the shadow of The Trinity Session (1988), and moving from the mainstream (including major labels, radio play, and a gig on Saturday Night Live) to just under the radar. Despite these changes, the Junkies have still been able to make great albums, like 1992's Black Eyed Man and 2001's Open. Both of these albums also showed a band willing to delve into new sounds (country and classic rock, respectively) and come up winners. One Soul Now seems to pick up where Open left off, retaining the tougher sound highlighted by edgy guitar work and a more rhythmic pulse...

weekly favtraX
27-10-18

California-based garage rock revivalist known for his prolific discography and his accurate recreations of '60s lo-fi.
Ty Segall - I'm a Man (The Spencer Davis Group cover) 3:07
...Segall’s improvisational style of psyched-out rock lends itself nicely to the genre, and what better way to dive right in than with a cover of Spencer Davis Group’s rumbling 1967 single “I’m A Man” — or as it usually reads in my head, “I’m a maaaaaan.” If you’re a Mad Man fan, or just a human with functioning ears on this earth, you have probably heard this song before and might find yourself humming it in times when you need to hype yourself up...

Barry Adamson's work as a bassist for Magazine and Nick Cave's Bad Seeds gave little indication of the complex, cinematic works he has composed and arranged as a solo artist.
Barry Adamson - The Snowball Effect 4:24
If the post-punk era produced a renaissance man, it's Barry Adamson. He was an integral member of Magazine and the founding incarnation of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. He played on synth pop albums by Visage and Pete Shelley. He's written and arranged for Nitzer Ebb, Ethyl Meatplow, Scott Walker, and Simple Minds, to name a few, and has contributed music to soundtracks like Derek Jarman's The Last of England, David Lynch's Lost Highway, Allison Anders' Gas Food Lodging, and Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers...

Duo from Switzerland who wowed critics and DJs with their witty and satisfying take on classic Krautrock and EDM.
Klaus Johann Grobe - An diesem Abend 5:19
After switching from the polished prog rock sound of their first album, Im Sinne der Zeit, to the relaxed disco/synth pop sound on their second, Spagat der Liebe, Swiss duo Klaus Johann Grobe don't mess much with the formula on their third record, 2018's Du Bist So Symmetrisch. It worked so well on Spagat der Liebe, the team of Sevi Landolt and Daniel Bachmann didn't really need to do anything different, and they don't...

Singer/guitarist Dean Wareham is more influential than he is usually given credit for. Often sounding like a depressed slacker, Wareham has inspired a number of indie rockers to express their sadness with a wistful tenor. / With his poetic, atmospherically hazy sound, New York singer/songwriter Cheval Sombre (aka Christopher Porpora) emerged in the mid-2000s as a torchbearer for '60s psychedelia and hypnotic space rock.
Dean Wareham and Cheval Sombre - The Bend in he River 3:19
As one might expect, 2018's Dean Wareham vs. Cheval Sombre finds the Luna frontman teaming up with fellow New York psych-folkie Cheval Sombre (aka Christopher Porpora) on set of thoughtfully curated covers. Less expected is the album's loose cowboy theme. As evoked by the title, this collection of songs by country luminaries like Townes Van Zandt, Blaze Foley, and Marty Robbins (as well some traditionals, standards, and lesser-known covers), brings to mind a late-'60s spaghetti Western buddy movie with Wareham playing the wandering troubadour and Sombre the cool-eyed poet/gunslinger...

One of indie rock's most respected bands, with a dreamy melodicism influenced by the Velvet Underground.
Yo La Tengo - For You Too 4:13
...Over a wind tunnel of electric guitars, Ira Kaplan’s voice echoes along with the persistent rhythm, mirroring the self-actualization in the lyrics. With a familiar and instantly memorable melodic pattern, he sings about the consistency of his personality like someone who’s long grown resigned to it...

Nicknamed the Humble Magnificent, Edan is a multifaceted hip-hop artist whose music is equally reverential to old-school rap and '60s acid rock, yet sounds utterly fresh and innovative.  / Thanks to his inventive flows, literate lyrics, and dry sense of humor, Homeboy Sandman emerged as one of the most original, prolific underground rappers of the late 2000s and 2010s.
Edan & Homeboy SandmanRock & Roll Indian Dance 3:10
Endlessly creative MC Homeboy Sandman and multi-talented psychedelic rap maestro Edan first collaborated on "Talking (Bleep)," a playful standout from Sandman's 2016 album Kindness for Weakness. Two years later, the duo teamed up once again for Humble Pi, the first studio album to bear the name Edan since 2005's cult classic Beauty and the Beat, which pre-dates Sandman's entire career. Both artists are in top form on the brief but explosive release. Edan's fetish for echo and obscure acid rock records is as evident as ever through his mind-bending productions, and Sandman's effortlessly complex lyrics are typically biting as well as insightful...

Unknown Mortal Orchestra's genre-defying approach to music has allowed the band's sound to shift and evolve with every new album. The band's driving force, Ruban Nielson, is a psychedelic explorer with an experimental bent that was clear from the very first home-recorded Unknown Mortal Orchestra album, which paired his soaring guitar work with winsome melodies and trippy production.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Hanoi 6 9:47
...The album features local musician Minh Nguyen and the Nielson’s father, Chris, and a press release notes that takes inspiration from jazz, krautrock, and avant-garde music. Today, they’re sharing a selection from the album, which comes in as “Hanoi 6,” and it’s a hypnotic blend of horns and gently shifting undercurrent...

One of the most in-demand jazz bassists of the 1990s and beyond, Christian McBride is renowned for both his work as a leader and sideman.
Christian McBrideBallad of Ernie Washington 5:34
What's a jawn? Well, it's Philly slang for something that you cannot name yet, or do not see the need to name. In Christian McBride's case, jawn refers to his immensely talented ensemble of fellow jazz musicians on his engaging 2018 album, Christian McBride's New Jawn. A titanic presence on the jazz scene since arriving in the '90s, McBride spent his early years playing propulsive neo-bop before re-engaging with his hip-hop, funk, and R&B roots on a series of genre-bending fusion albums...

Crucial part of L.A.'s progressive jazz scene, a saxophonist whose connections include Gerald Wilson and Raphael Saadiq; released an expansive 2015 LP.
Kamasi Washington - Fists of Fury 9:43
...“Fists of Fury,” the opening song of Washington’s new double album Heaven and Earth, represents a slight change of pace from his previous work: It endorses physical combat as a way to fight injustice. “I use hands to help my fellow man,” vocalists Dwight Trible and Patrice Quinn declare in unison. “And when I’m faced with unjust injury/Then I change my hands to fists of fury.” Backed by a full choir, a bright piano solo, and Washington’s shrieking horn, the song grows more restless as it plays, settling into a calm groove before rising to a volcanic peak...

Chicago-based drummer, composer, and producer whose highly original creative music fuses jazz, hip-hop, rock, and global rhythmic traditions.
Makaya McCraven - Voila 5:00
...“It’s like, gag me,” he says of the idea that jazz needs saving. Part of the inspiration behind his latest album, Universal Beings (due out October 26th on International Anthem) was the music’s current vitality. McCraven recorded the project with four different ensembles, in four different cities: New York, Los Angeles, London and Chicago, his adopted hometown...

Parisian deep house DJ and producer Etienne de Crécy was a key figure behind the French capital's rise as one of the world's dance music hubs during the 1990s. / Spinning wry, observant stories of life among the well-heeled but poorly behaved, Baxter Dury is a songwriter and vocalist with a strong and distinctive style. He's also British rock royalty, the son of pub rock/new wave icon Ian Dury, and his vocal style and lyrical bent owe a certain debt to his old man, while his music confirms he has a keen creative mind of his own./  Skinny Girl Diet is an unsigned independent British political punk band, often described as riot grrrl, formed in London, England. The group consists of singer, songwriter and guitarist Delilah Holliday and drummer Ursula Holliday.
Etienne de Crécy / Baxter Dury / Delilah Holliday - Centipedes 1:29
On paper, the combination of French house pioneer Étienne de Crécy, caustic monologist Baxter Dury, and new-breed riot grrrl Delilah Holliday of Skinny Girl Diet seems like it wouldn't work. Or maybe it was just mad enough to work, because their 2018 album, B.E.D, is a delight. The performers work to fit their individual skills into a cohesive unit; de Crécy builds sparse, bubbling musical beds over which Dury intones his tales of woe and disdain, while Holliday brings some velvety drama to the proceedings...

The perpetually haunted voice of Radiohead reserved his solo billing for further electronics and beats experimentation.
Thom Yorke - Has Ended 4:56
...Now he’s released another sample from the soundtrack double-album: a droning, psych-rock composition called “Has Ended,” featuring echoing, processed vocals from Yorke and a synth-sitar underpinning. If you enjoy Yorke at his most Can-worshipping, then “Has Ended” may be the song for you this morning...

Engaging blend of indie rock melodies, pop hooks, grungy guitars, and confessional lyrics from Alicia Bognanno. Playing upbeat but noisy indie rock with pop hooks and more than a slight grunge influence, Bully is a band from Nashville, Tennessee founded by vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist Alicia Bognanno.
Bully
Feel the Same 1:59
Guess There 3:00
from Losing 2017
On the release of their debut record, Feels Like, '90s alt-rock revivalists Bully appeared to be the band with the most authentic credentials. Their ostensibly unwavering commitment to the sound of that era was supported by the recording of their debut at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio (Bully's founding member Alicia Bognanno interned at the studio under the tutelage of Albini, and returned there to engineer Losing herself) as well as their recent signing to Sub Pop. However, while there was a great deal of praise for her songwriting, that admiration was sometimes footnoted by mild regret at a lack of unique character in their music. Extraneous circumstances aside, Bully have very much stuck to their guns with this latest offering, but not at the expense of development. If Feels Like revealed a very promising young songwriter, Losing cements that early potential...

Vancouver four-piece blends sounds of rock & roll's past with 21st century lyrical concerns. Fusing elements of surf, garage rock, punk, and a dash of indie pop, Vancouver's Tough Age describe their music as "culmination rock," with four veterans of the Canadian underground rock scene pooling their ideas, influences, and experience for the project.
Tough Age
Everyday Life 3:15
Unclean 4:46
from Shame 2017
Canadian indie outfit Tough Age alter their formula on record number three, leaning deeper into elements of post-punk and the quirky melodicism of Flying Nun-inspired guitar pop while leaving behind much of the '60s-indebted garage affectations of earlier releases. Slimmed down to a trio and now calling Toronto home, former Vancouverites Jarrett Samson (vocals/guitar) and Penny Clark (vocals/bass) hooked up with drummer Jesse Locke in search of a sound that was more minimalist and dynamic. Having signed with Mint Records just prior to their debut, Shame is Tough Age's third outing with the label and their first working with Montreal-based producer/engineer Peter Woodford (Freelove Fenner), whose all-analog Bottle Garden studio was elemental in facilitating their leaner approach...

Also a sidewoman, arranger, and film composer, French musician Léonie Pernet puts an artful spin on anxious synth pop as a solo artist.
Léonie Pernet
African Melancholia 3:28
Crave 5:51
from Crave 2018
Crave is the debut of French musician Léonie Pernet, who spent ten years as a touring bandmember, DJ, arranger, film composer, and emerging solo artist before endeavoring to write and produce her first full album. While a prior EP previewed the deadpan vocal delivery and experimental edge to Pernet's atmospheric indie electronica -- then centered around electronic keyboards, piano, and live rock drums -- Crave relies on danceable beats and reveals a more cinematic and cosmopolitan synth pop...

Brooklyn-via-Boston group combining no wave, punk, funk, psychedelia, and more in chaotic and ecstatic ways. Equal parts ecstatic and hallucinogenic, the genre-unrestricted group Guerilla Toss draw from no wave and noise as well as funk, punk, and psychedelia.
Guerilla Toss
Magic Is Easy 3:11
Walls of the Universe 4:04
from Twisted Crystal 2018
Since moving to Brooklyn and signing with DFA, Guerilla Toss have evolved from their beginnings as a cathartic, free jazz-influenced noise-rock band to an acid-splashed party machine. Twisted Crystal is their third album for the iconic dance-punk label, and it's easily their most striking, focused, and fun work to date. As with Eraser Stargazer and GT Ultra, there's an abundance of thick, rubbery basslines and complex polyrhythms, as well as ecstatic vocals from frontwoman Kassie Carlson. However, Twisted Crystal stands out simply by having catchier songs which concentrate on new wave-influenced hooks without abandoning the experimentation or urgency of the group's earlier work...

Austin, Texas-based guitarist who gained fame in the '90s as Eric Clapton's right-hand man and who pursued a blues-rock career of his own.
DOYLE BRAMHALL II - Love and Pain 4:10
It took Doyle Bramhall II 15 years to deliver Rich Man, the sequel to 2001's Welcome, but only two to follow that 2016 record with Shades. Appropriately, Shades feels looser than its predecessor and more direct, too. Where Rich Man was dotted with epics, Bramhall keeps things generally concise on Shades, and he also firmly grounds the album in soul. The first sounds on Shades may recall the thick, heavy blues grooves of the Black Keys but by the time Bramhall gets to the chorus of "Love and Pain," he spins the song into classic '60s R&B...

Former Toy Soldiers frontman whose music evolved from roots rock to garage punk as he moved from Philadelphia to Nashville. Ron Gallo is the name of a Philadelphia-bred rock musician whose music embraces elements of both roots rock and garage punk with an abundance of smarts and passion.
RON GALLO - It's All Gonna Be OK 2:51
Leaving his well-mannered past as a roots rocker behind, Ron Gallo showed off a lean-and-mean sound and a lyrical style full of snarky wit on 2017's Heavy Meta, and he's dug in deeper with his second album from his eponymous band. 2018's Stardust Birthday Party is dominated by no-frills melodies rooted in Gallo's sharp, choppy guitar figures and the taut, efficient rhythms of bassist Joe Bisirri and drummer Dylan Sevey, which isn't that far off from the formula on Heavy Meta...

Primarily instrumental post-rock quartet from Japan with an angular, guitar-driven sound. Bearing no relation to the short-lived Chicago-based group of the same name, Toe are a primarily instrumental rock quartet from Japan consisting of guitarists Mino Takaaki and Yamazaki Hirokazu, drummer Kashikura Takashi, and bassist Yamane Satoshi.
TOE - Dual Harmonics 3:13
Since 2000, Japanese quartet Toe have been making highly intricate post-rock music that sounds like it was produced by an advanced, ultra-precise machine, yet feels earthy and organic. Their songs are typically characterized by clean-sounding guitar melodies working in tandem with eternally fluctuating drumbeats... "The Latest Number" features a slightly stilted but danceable rhythm along with hushed yet alert vocals, with bits of electronics and vibraphones stitching the guitars and rhythm section together during the bridge. This is certainly Toe in pop mode, but even when they concentrate on showcasing their musicianship, they're still quite accessible.

A neo-psychedelic, dark blues quartet from Nashville. Though their '60s and '70s influences are plain, their sound is mercurial.  A versatile hard rock quartet based out of Nashville, Tennessee, All Them Witches draw from a deep well of musical inspiration that includes Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, Sun, Moon & Herbs-era Dr. John, and the electric Delta swamp blues of Junior Kimbrough.
ALL THEM WITCHES - Diamond 6:09
2017's Sleeping Through the War saw the Tennessee-based psych-blues outfit drop a largely song-oriented set of cosmic stoner metal emissions that dialed back on some of the more exploratory aspects of their previous outings...  If anything, ATW feels like a product of pure instinct, and while it may take some patience to absorb, there isn't a single note that feels coerced.

Louisiana-born jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader known for his eclectic crossover music. Keyboardist, bandleader, singer, composer, and educator Jon Batiste is an adventurous, eclectic, jazz-based musician.
JON BATISTE - Saint James Infirmary Blues 4:18
“There’s so much going on in the world that I wanted to respond to, and there’s not a lot of music where people can meditate, think, reflect, but also be uplifted by” says Batiste, calling from a car in the midst of a hectic day of press in Manhattan for his new album. “I wanted to get back to the basics of who I am as a musician but also the basics of who I am as a person.”... Produced by T Bone Burnett, the album is a sparse solo affair guided entirely by Batiste’s Jelly Roll Morton–inspired piano playing and, for the first time, his vocals. Across 11 tracks, Batiste traverses the entire history of 20th-century music,

Danish band who offer a smart and ambitious spin on punk that's still packed with emotional and physical power.
Iceage - Catch It 5:45
...Lead singer Elias Bender Rønnenfelt was born to brood, and on “Catch It,” he delivers one of his most emotive vocal performances yet. Over a simple, lurching chord progression, he groans and seethes into the mic, telling his story as with the wrinkles in his voice as with his words. Because there are only a few notes in the new single’s vocal melody, Rønnenfelt has more of a chance to modulate the texture of his voice...

Born in the deep south (of England!) in 1971, Ian's earliest musical memories are of the likes of Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis and Chuck Berry, but it was on hearing the great Little Richard that he really caught the music bug and became nothing short of obsessive about it. This lead him into a life-long passion for the Blues and all of its various branches, and most of all, the man he calls "God" - the inimitable Muddy Waters.
IAN SIEGAL - The Sh*t Hit 5:39
A studio album from Ian Siegal is always a seismic event. Recent times have seen this award-winning British songwriter put untold miles on the clock, with the spit-and-grit of his shows bottled in several live albums. But in 2018, it’s tantalising to find his name alongside ten new original songs and to anticipate where All The Rage might take the man whose material was rightly trumpeted by Mojo as “awash with wit, lust and distraction”.

The former Pavement frontman's solo career has a broader musical palette, evoking British folk, '70s prog, psychedelia, and blazing guitar rock.
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks - Middle America 3:31
...Melodically, “Middle America” sounds like it could have been hiding in a vault since Pavement's final 1999 album, Terror Twilight. Lyrically, it adopts more gravitas than Malkmus' irreverent former band ever attempted. Lines about growing older in the United States circle around his patented breezy guitar work...

The quartet that defined Seattle grunge, a group with a penchant for heavy metal muscle, punk attitude, and garage rock primitivism.  Nirvana may have been the band that put an entire generation in flannel, and Pearl Jam and Soundgarden both sold a lot more records, but Mudhoney were truly the band that made the '90s grunge rock movement possible
MUDHONEY - Prosperity Gospel 3:48
Some bands mellow with age, as their youthful fury gives way to a more understanding frame of mind. Mudhoney are clearly not one of those bands. The grunge pioneers have long thrived on snark the way other folks require oxygen, but since they returned to the indie ranks with 2002's Since We've Become Translucent, lead singer Mark Arm has been more eager than ever to vent his spleen on the troubles of the world around him. Mudhoney have rarely sounded as flat-out pissed off as they do on 2018's Digital Garbage, an album that's a clear reflection of America in the year it was created

The largely improvised post-punk-meets-Krautrock collaboration between Anika and Mexico City's indie luminaries. A kinetic mix of post-punk, dub, and Krautrock, Exploded View builds on the sounds of its members' other projects -- most notably vocalist/keyboardist Annika Henderson's work as a solo artist -- while creating its own identity with its stream-of-consciousness grooves.
EXPLODED VIEW - Dark Stains 3:25
On Exploded View's self-titled debut, the band's stream-of-consciousness post-punk drew a significant part of its impact from its live recording process, which emphasized the album's dreamlike flow and surprising tangents. The band -- now the trio of Annika Henderson, Hugo Quezada, and Martin Thulin -- brings a little more order to the proceedings on Obey. The trio tracked the album in a more traditional fashion at Thulin and Quezada's Mexico City studio, but fortunately, the more controlled environment doesn't diminish Exploded View's evocative power at all. If anything, Obey draws listeners into their lucid dreams more completely as they explore the costs of conformity and resisting it.

A blend of Krautrock grooves and eerie atmospheres, featuring Portishead's Geoff Barrow. Featuring members of Portishead and Moon Gangs, Beak> is a trio crafting dense and atmospheric music inspired by dub, Krautrock, and the Beach Boys.
BEAK> - Brean Down 3:51
>>>  "You don't like our music cuz it ain't up on the radio," Beak>'s Geoff Barrow sings on >>> with something approaching pride. This contrarian attitude defines the band's third album: Barrow and company could have easily made another album of sinister motorik-driven instrumentals like >>, but this time, they blow up their music.

A dazzling electric guitarist with a steely tone and fluid lines to earmark his distinctive post-bop style. Known for his distinctive, slightly distorted sound, jazz guitarist John Scofield is a masterful jazz improviser who has straddled the lines between straight-ahead post-bop, fusion, funk, and soul-jazz. One of the "big three" of late 20th century jazz guitarists (along with Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell), Scofield's influence grew in the '90s and continued into the 21st century.
JOHN SCOFIELD - Dang Swing 6:08
Scofield is on fine form here with a strong selection of tunes that, in their stylistic breadth, serve as a great introduction to the iconic guitarist's roots-based language. Scofield, like Bill Frisell, is perhaps more mellow in his sixties, luxuriating in every note, weighing every phrase, but there are still enough sparks here to satisfy his legion of long-term fans.
