Long Tall Sonny (Sopron, 1983), azaz Mr. Rhythm-and-blues Európa legfigyelemreméltóbb autentikus rhythm-and-blues énekese, gitárosa, aki a műfaj eredeti, 40-es, 50-es évekbeli formáját népszerűsíti.
1998 óta játszik színpadon, eleinte egyedül lépett föl, akusztikus country-blues műsorral, majd számtalan formációval dolgozott együtt, rendszeresen többek között a Blue S. Trio-val, Big Fat Chubby-val (az évek során Sonny az ország szinte összes blues-zenészével koncertezett együtt, Fekete Jenőtől Pribojszki Mátyáson át Little G. Weevil-ig, ahogy rock-a-billy bandákkal is fellépett, pl. Mystery Gang, Rockin’ RockCats).

Legfõbb segítõtársa ezúttal is Titusz, aki élvezetes, szórakoz-tató és szellemes zenéket kevert a magukban is ütõs szövegek alá, ráadásul helyenként - külön kuriózum - gitározik is. A muzsikus segítõtársak listája szintén terebélyes: a késõbb külön is említendõk mellett P. G. és Mr. Rigó gitárosok, továbbá vendégfúvósok és rejtélyes vokalisták segítették a szerzõk munkáját. A középpontban persze Sickratman egyszerre közéleti, köz- és magánérzületi, valamint meta-fizikusan játékos szövegei állnak: a mesemondó tabukat dönt, provokál, ironizál, analizál (mindkét értelemben) és gyakorta zárójelbe tesz. Ráadásul - úgy tûnik - rendre sikerül eltalálnia az ötlethez tökéle-tesen illõ mûformát, s eközben mindegyiktõl diszkréten távolságot is tart. Nyilván minden befogadó számára fel fog tûnni: a Buzi-e vagy? jó értelemben vett politikus lemez (is), ám korántsem agitpop...

2011-2000

Terakaft (meaning “caravan” in Tamasheq) is a genuine desert rock band, sculpted by the pure searing air and the endless rolling sands of the Sahara. The stark, harsh conditions of the desert have permeated their wild riffs, and as a result they are the perfect embodiment of all that is wild and free in desert blues today. Terakaft was formed in 2001 with a line-up that included two former members of Tinariwen, and they have since made the electric guitar their own...
Alghalem (Abdallah Ag Ahmed) 3:41
Aman Wi Kawalnen (Liya Ag Ablil / Sanou Ag Ahmed) 3:45
Ahabib (Liya Ag Ablil) 5:01
from Aratan N Azawad 2011
The new album from Terakaft presents the Tamasheq band in live performance, with a lean tightness to the sound that leaves the group positioned between the desert blues genre and rock. A song like "Aman Wi Kawalnen" has the suppleness of the best Sahara bands, but the flow of lead guitar work that characterizes rock. Even where acoustic guitar dominates, as with "Aratan N Azawad," that same feel is there. In part that's because the band is only a three-piece (two guitars, bass, and vocals, supplemented for the recording with percussion and some additional guitar), offering a sparer, cleaner sound. There's a liquid beauty to the music with its easy, rolling rhythms, but the intensity always simmers, occasionally firing into flame, as with the biting, incisive guitar breaks in "Ahabib." It's no longer fair to call Terakaft an up-and-coming band. On this basis of this, they've arrived, with their sound fully developed.

Chicha started in the '60s when the Indian population of the Peruvian Amazon discovered the Columbian pop music known as cumbia and American rock & roll. With cheap electric instruments, Peru's Amazon Indians started dance bands that blended the cumbia, with a beat that sounds a bit like ska, Andean folk tunes, and their own indigenous music. When the Indians moved to Lima, they brought chicha with them. Like Afro-Peruvian music, chicha was shunned by "polite" society and it didn't gain an international profile until Olivier Conan, owner of Barbés Records, discovered the music on a trip to Peru in 2006. He found bootleg chicha cassettes on the streets and finally tracked down the master tapes of several chicha labels that had gone bankrupt. He put out a compilation of tunes called Roots of Chicha: Psychedelic Cumbias from Peru and started his own chicha band, Chicha Libre. Chicha isn't going to rule the world anytime soon, but the music caused a sensation in world music circles and Psychedelic Cumbias from Peru was praised by The New York Times, BBC, and other international publications. The Roots of Chicha, Vol. 2 continues to explore this hitherto unknown genre with 16 more mind-bending rave-ups cut between 1968 and 1981...

There's no doubt that Franco was, in every sense of the word, a big man in African music. Sometimes weighing in at 300 pounds, he also earned his nickname as "The Sorcerer of the Guitar," making it sing like no one before, with effortless, fluid lines. Also an accomplished composer and vocalist, Francois Luambo Makiadi remains a towering figure even in death, probably the greatest the Congo (later Zaire) has ever produced, and as the leader of the long-running O.K. Jazz group, he was one of the fathers of the modern Congolese sound. ..

2008-1997

An acclaimed, genre-bending jazz trio, the Bad Plus play a maverick combination of originals and covers that blur the line between post-bop jazz, and instrumental rock. Formed in 1990, the group originally featured longtime friends, pianist Ethan Iverson, bassist Reid Anderson, and drummer David King...

Lithium (Kurt Cobain) 4:48
Comfortably Numb (David Gilmour / Roger Waters) 6:43
from For All I Care 2008
That the Bad Plus have recorded pop covers since their inception as a piano/bass/drums trio is a given in their M.O. The Minnesota-based trio has consistently added tunes by Blondie, Queen, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Ornette Coleman, and Burt Bacharach to their albums -- in addition to their own compositions -- as they've gone about reinventing the piano trio sound and dynamic in jazz (they have become the loudest, most hard rocking acoustic trio in the music's history). Some critics have accused them of camp, but this is simply a pronouncement of ignorance and prejudicial conservative and "preservationist" paranoia... For All I Care also marks their first recording entirely comprised of covers. The songs range from tunes by Nirvana (who they've covered before), Wilco, and Pink Floyd to Milton Babbitt, Igor Stravinsky, Yes, the Flaming Lips, and Gyorgy Ligeti, to Heart, Roger Miller, and the Bee Gees. There isn't an original on the set. Another first for the trio on For All I Care is the addition of Minneapolis rock vocalist Wendy Lewis. Perhaps the most compelling, shocking, and wonderful thing about this collaboration is how much Lewis' presence becomes part of the trio's landscape...  This is one of the most compelling releases yet by one of the new jazz's finest bands to emerge in the 21st century.

Since making his full-length leader debut with 1998's Électronique Noire, Norway's Eivind Aarset has established himself as an exploratory guitarist, composer, producer, and sound designer. His unique musical vision absorbs and reflects influences from many musical genres and approaches. Aarset's attention to detail and careful craftsmanship have resulted in recontextualizing the role of the guitar in modern creative music as evidenced by 2007's Sonic Codex and 2012's Dream Logic...
Sign Of Seven / Bass clarinet – Hans Ulrik / Baritone guitar & celesta – Audun Erlien 6:26
Black Noise/White Silence / Electric bass – Marius Reksjø 3:06
from Sonic Codex 2007
This fourth solo album Sonic Codex from Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset incorporates concepts from his earlier albums, restates, elaborates and reinforces them to generate a genuine masterpiece, that might be a defining moment in both Aarset’s career and the history of Jazzland. Sonic Codex puts forward rules of engagement that Aarset collaborate with the audience, and very deliberately quotes and redefines the musicality that made up his previous three albums, “Electronique Noire”, “Light Extracts”, and “Connected”, yet also points his way forward: it is an innovative present that simultaneously summarizes the past, and predicts the future.

Dave Douglas is among the most original trumpeters and composers of his generation. His stylistic range is broad yet unaffected, his music reflects a personal aesthetic with a panoply of interests, and he explicitly cites such diverse influences as Igor Stravinsky, Stevie Wonder, and John Coltrane (among many others)...
Culture Wars (Dave Douglas) 12:46
Blues to Steve Lacy (Dave Douglas) 5:55
...Meaning and Mystery showcases the band -- Douglas on trumpet, Uri Caine on Fender Rhodes, bassist James Genus, and drummer Clarence Penn -- with its first personnel change as tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin replaces Chris Potter, whose own star is rising and is too busy to maintain a constant presence in the group. McCaslin, who is less well known, is no less a player. His voice on the horn is unique, and his phrasing complex and songlike... The standout track here is "Culture Wars." Douglas has never made bones about Miles being a huge influence -- he even refers to it in the liner notes. Obviously, the quintet format echoes the great inconoclasts as well. But Douglas moves it into other areas. The open, relaxed, moody atmosphere of the cut begins slowly, reminding one -- perhaps because of Caine's Rhodes playing -- of Davis' In a Silent Way, particularly when the simple groove takes over. Genus' ostinato is infectious, chantlike, hypnotic... Meaning and Mystery is yet another album in the Douglas catalog that showcases his fine compositional and arrangement abilities, but more than this, it's the sound of a group in the process of continued restless development long after the bandmembers have found their collective voice.

2012-2002

With a naturally expressive voice that has drawn comparisons to greats like Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald, Texas-based singer and songwriter Ruthie Foster has a wide palette of American song forms -- gospel and blues to jazz, folk, and soul -- and her live performances are powerfully transfiguring...
Long Time Gone (David Crosby) 5:14
This Time (David Hidalgo / Louis Perez / Louie Pérez) 4:48
Everlasting Light (Dan Auerbach / Patrick Carney) 3:33
from Let It Burn 2012
One of the gospel-blues scene's best-kept secrets for over a decade, Texan singer/songwriter Ruthie Foster finally achieved some long-overdue mainstream recognition when her 2009 sixth studio effort, The Truth According to Ruthie Foster, picked up a Grammy nomination. By putting down the guitar and concentrating entirely on her vocals for the first time in her career, her follow-up, Let It Burn, suggests she means business. It's a wise move, as her impassioned, soulful tones have always been her main selling point, and backed by an impressive array of musicians, including the Meters' rhythm section and legendary gospel act the Blind Boys of Alabama, they're allowed the freedom to showcase their versatility... But whichever era Foster picks and chooses from, Let It Burn always feels utterly timeless.

Tommy Castro is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, and bandleader. His muscular brand of roots music indulges electric and jump blues, funky R&B-inflected rockers, and searing soul-drenched ballads. An incendiary lead guitarist and showman, he often plays more than 200 dates a year...
Voodoo Spell feat. Michael Burks 10:02
from Tommy Castro Presents The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue--Live! 2011
A direct descendant from the traveling bundled artist packages of the '60s right down to its retro "hatch show"-styled cover art, Tommy Castro and his band play host to a relatively diverse assortment of high-energy blues and soul acts. The concept originated on the yearly Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise where such musical collaborations are typical. Castro's concept was to take that concept on the road, resulting in this dozen-track live album cherrypicked from various tour stops. It's a rollicking, very plugged-in affair... Everyone is at the top of their game with an electricity and vein-popping excitement that can only be generated when musicians feed off each other live...

Blues guitarist Albert Castiglia was born in New York on August 12, 1969. Five years later his parents moved to Miami, where Castiglia began learning guitar. By the age of 12, he began playing local gigs and did so consistently throughout high school. Following completion of his college education, Castiglia worked as a social service investigator while playing gigs at night and on weekends around South Florida. In 1990 he joined Miami Blues Authority, and was the group's lead guitarist and vocalist for over seven years. After an audition with Chicago blues harp legend Junior Wells in 1997, Castiglia become the permanent lead guitarist for Wells' Hoodoo Man's Band. Following Junior's death in 1998, the band stayed together long enough to open shows for blues belter Sandra Hall. In 2001 Castiglia began writing his own material with the help of Graham Drout, guitarist and vocalist with the Miami-based band Iko Iko...

Mojo 305 (Albert Castiglia / Steven Gaskell / Jerome Mascaro) 3:58
Murderin' Blues (Robert Nighthawk) 5:25
from Keepin' On 2010
Albert Castiglia has been making his living as a bluesman for 20 years, coming to prominence as lead guitarist for the legendary Junior Wells. He's played with a who's who of blues greats in his career and stepped out on his own in 2002 with Burn, an album that got universal raves. There's no doubting Castiglia's power as a guitarist... Critics often compare Castiglia's singing to Van Morrison, and maybe there was a bit of Van the Man in his vocal style years back, but on Keepin On he has his own signature style, a combination of urban grit and smooth, soulful crooning. Like Robert Cray, Castiglia combines hardcore blues with soul, rock, and country flavors for a sound that will appeal to rockers and blues purists alike.

A rock & roll duo from California, Deap Vally deliver a primal mix of hard rock stomp, glam rock swagger, and greasy blues riffs, like the White Stripes colliding with the Black Keys after time traveling to the 1970s and back. With just guitar, vocals, and drums, the group manage to sound full-bodied while possessing a deadly sense of cool, a healthy degree of sonic punch, and a deadpan sense of humor in their braggadocious lyrics...
Perfuction 2:56
Phoenix 2:57
from Marriage 2021
Now that two-piece rock bands are no longer considered an anomaly, high-energy duos are expected to have ready answers to the question of how you keep things fresh and change up your sound when there are only two instruments to contend with. Deap Vally, consisting of guitarist and singer Lindsey Troy and drummer Julie Edwards, showed they knew how to deliver primal, stripped-back rock on their first two albums (2013's Sistrionix and 2016's Femejism), and their third full-length, 2021's Marriage, finds them expanding and exploring a bit after firmly establishing their template of straightforward hard rock with a side of blues and a dash of glam. Through the magic of overdubbing, Troy has added several extra layers of guitar on most of the tracks here, as well as multiplying her half-breathy, half-sneering insouciant vocals into massed choruses and casual but passionate harmonies... Though Deap Vally have found new ways to dress up their music on Marriage, at their core they haven't changed that much -- this is still a smart, powerful rock band with sharp wit and an abundance of well-deserved confidence -- but the added details and textures make a difference, and this music points to a more interesting future for them than one might have imagined after Femejism.

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard's sense of unfettered sonic exploration makes it easy to mistake them for a long-forgotten relic of the psych explosion of the 1960s. With a far-out sound that, at times, feels barely held together, King Gizzard evoke the eclectic rock experimentation of Frank Zappa's early work with the Mothers of Invention, the anything-goes feeling of the Flaming Lips, and the demented glee of a random, obscure '60s group plucked from a Pebbles compilation as they follow their musical flights of fancy wherever they might lead...
Minimum Brain Size 4:18
Some Of Us 3:52
from K.G. 2020
Over a ten-year span spent releasing an album every few weeks (or so it seemed) King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard never repeated themselves, always pushing forward and trying new things whether it was lengthy jazz excursions, gloom-and-doom synth prog, or thundering thrash metal. That changed some on 2020's K.G., where the band revisit the approach used on Flying Microtonal Banana, the group's 2017 album built around the avant-garde sounds of their custom-made guitars and altered instruments. Stuck in their various homes during the global pandemic, the band gravitated toward the unique instruments and built a batch of songs using their non-Western tunings and tones. Unlike that album, though, where that almost felt like a (mostly successful) gimmick, this time the guitars are more fully integrated into the songs...

Indie pop quintet Night Flowers cast a warm spell of dreamy guitar pop and dulcet boy/girl vocals that result in a wistful, romantic sound. Based in London, but with Northern English roots and an American singer, the band rode a steady stream of singles and EPs in the mid-2010s to critical acclaim, both in the U.K. and Japan...
Night Train 4:38
Merry-Go-Round 2:25
from Fortune Teller 2019
Awash with wistful, romantic lyrics and breezy guitar jangle, London's Night Flowers made a winning impression on their 2018 debut, Wild Notion. Greg Ullyart, Chris Hardy, Sam Lenthall, and Zebedee Budworth originally formed the band in Humberside before moving south to the capitol where they recruited American singer Sophia Petitt to complete their lineup. The sound they make together flirts with the misty borders of dream pop, but ultimately plays like a cleaner and more straightforward take on classic indie pop. Guitarist Ullyart shares some of the lead vocals with the dulcet-toned Pettit, making for some amiable interplay and sweet harmonies. Appearing a little over a year after their debut, Fortune Teller is Night Flowers' second full-length and sees the band shifting even more toward a mainstream sound with clear, full production from drummer Budworth and arrangements that fall somewhere between soft rock and the more earnest side of '80s college rock...
