The duo of Charles Howl and Danny Voltaire are lovers of hazy, misty psychedelic sounds as heard since the 1960s. As the rhythm section of the Proper Ornaments, they get a chance to play a Velvet Underground style, but on their own as the driving force behind the band Charles Howl, they cast a wide net that gathers in all sorts of trippy sounds on their debut album Sir Vices. Taking all they can from the best practitioners of psychedelic sounds, whether it's the rambling feel of the 13th Floor Elevators, the tinny jangle of the Paisley Underground bands, the repetitive waves of sound of My Bloody Valentine, or the reverb-heavy crunch of modern groups like Crystal Stilts. A long list of styles and bands like that might lead one to think that Charles Howl are overly derivative, but that's not the case at all. Thanks to a light-fingered touch, they manage to beg, borrow, and steal just enough here and there to help build a sound that is mostly theirs alone. Plus, the songs are good enough that it wouldn't really matter if they heisted every fuzz box, Farfisa organ, and chord progression that was left lying around unguarded...



British all-female quartet revisits influences from London's punk heyday with its own brand of noisy, blistering music.  The all-female post-punk four-piece Savages recall the tenacity and more artistic movements of London's punk heyday with their blistering sound and noisy guitars. Hailing from the English capital, they formed at the end of 2011 after guitarist Gemma Thompson and singer Camille Berthomier -- known as Jehnny Beth -- had procrastinated over a name and starting a band until they eventually settled on Savages and set to work writing songs. Soon after, Ayse Hassan joined on bass and Fay Milton completed the lineup on drums.

Dreamy but aggressive guitar-based indie pop from Vancouver, led by guitarist and songwriter Jo Hirabayashi. A band whose music exists somewhere between dream pop, shoegaze, indie rock, and prog, Jo Passed balance languid melodies and blissed-out vocals against guitar figures that are by turns artful and aggressively physical. The Vancouver-based group was formed by guitarist and songwriter Jo Hirabayashi in 2015, originally as a two-man recording project with drummer Mac Lawrie; this edition of the group produced two EPs in 2016. After a sojourn in Montreal, the band expanded to a quartet with the addition of guitarist Bella Bébé and bassist Megan-Magdalena Bourne.

...If you’re a fan of heavy layers of distortion and reverb, then this EP is going to speak volumes to you. Concerning the volume, Jo Passed get LOUD to the point of drowning out Hirabayashi’s vocals. Appropriately, there’s a song titled “Rage” on the Out EP, but it’s not the cannon blast of chaos you’d expect from its name. The song’s declarations of rage are more subtle than the EP’s opener “In”. Instead, “Rage” is comparable with sludgy, stoner rock. Hirabayashi does seem to be an admirer of Ty Segall’s balls-to-the-walls bad assery. Four out of five of Out‘s songs drive this point home with “Spring” being the most volatile; reaching thunderous highs and easing into a calm climax...




Rocking, experimental guitarist who played in two of Miles Davis' 1980s bands; debuted as a leader in 1985.  Recognized as one of the finest electric guitarists among his peers, Mike Stern was born on January 10, 1953, in Boston, Massachusetts, but grew up in Washington, D.C. before returning to Boston to study at the Berklee School of Music. Stern was only 22 when he joined Blood, Sweat & Tears, with whom he played for three years before signing on with Billy Cobham's jazz fusion outfit, which led to Stern's big breakthrough when Miles Davis enlisted him as guitarist for Davis' return from a five-year musical hiatus in 1981...

...Stern enlisted an all-star cast playing in different configurations, achieving a diversity that even exceeds All Over the Place. The title track with drummer Dennis Chambers, bassist Victor Wooten, keyboardist/album producer Jim Beard, and saxophonist Bob Franceschini is a knotty exercise in rocking jazz-funk fusion with peeling guitar riffs, solos, and fills. There's a Miles Davis lilt to "Blueprint" with Randy Brecker guesting on muted trumpet, while Beard plays B-3 and synths, and Chambers offers his best take on Al Foster. Stern eventually touches on the blues before it winds out. "Half Crazy" is blazing, hard-grooving post-bop, with Beard on piano, swinging tenorist Bill Evans, drummer Lenny White, and Teymur Phell on bass. "Screws" commences slowly and quixotically with Wallace Roney on trumpet and the rest of the rhythm section above, as well as percussionist Arto Tuncboyaciyan. While the melody builds in layers and spirals upwards, Roney and Stern each solo hard, adding limber bluesy funk until they deconstruct it to a fade...

Vocalist who makes atmospheric orchestral pop showcasing her torchy image and sensuously husky singing style. Lana Del Rey envisioned a Southern Californian dream world constructed out of sad girls and bad boys, manufactured melancholy and genuine glamour, and then she came to embody this fantasy.

Courtney Barnett specializes in miniatures, which is why her 2015 debut, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, was such a wonder: with barbed words and gnarled guitars, she made everyday minutiae seem compelling. Three years in the making -- it was delayed in part due to a 2017 collaboration with Kurt Vile -- the 2018 sequel, Tell Me How You Really Feel, plays like the flip image of its predecessor. What once was captivating now feels indifferent, delivered with a shrug instead of a snarl. Everything about Tell Me How You Really Feel seems muted, whether it's the grungy stomp of Barnett and her band -- a group that remains steadfastly and proudly stuck in the glory days of '90s alt-rock -- or her words, which now seem to meander to a point instead of cutting to the quick...


Rock & roll auteur at the helm of the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, Dead Weather, and Third Man Records, plus production work and solo albums.  One of the most admired guitarists of the early 21st century, Jack White helped restore the popularity of punk-blues as the frontman of the White Stripes. Meanwhile, he widened his reach by participating in a range of other projects, including the Raconteurs, the Cold Mountain soundtrack, Loretta Lynn's comeback vehicle Van Lear Rose, the Dead Weather, and a solo career. Although White's nasal voice and loose, fiery guitar delivery were mainstays of the White Stripes' early work, the group branched out as its reputation grew, building upon an initially minimalist sound with elements of metal, backwoods country, pop, and early rock & roll.

Due to his affection for prewar music and myths, Jack White often gets pigeonholed as a blues-rock revivalist -- an assessment that isn't so much wrong as it is incomplete. Even in the earliest days of the White Stripes, White limited his aural palette with deliberate zeal, a practice he sustained through the Stripes as well as his first two solo albums. Boarding House Reach is where he expands his horizons and that discipline begins to fracture, and quite intentionally so... While that keeps Boarding House Reach somewhat in a straitjacket, it also makes it a fascinating listen, because it's a document of a control freak anxious to get loose.


Eternally restless figure who pursued an idiosyncratic solo career touching on everything from noise-rock and synth pop to blues and rockabilly.  After Neil Young left the California folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield in 1968, he slowly established himself as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic singer/songwriters of his generation. Young's body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his critical reputation, as well as record sales, for a longer period of time than Dylan, partially because of his willfully perverse work ethic. From the beginning of his solo career in the late '60s through to the 21st century, he never stopped writing, recording, and performing; his official catalog only represented a portion of his work, since he kept countless tapes of unreleased songs in his vaults.

Like many citizens of the world, Neil Young didn't handle the electoral events of 2016 with ease. Already leaning toward a state of constant cryptic protest -- he managed to turn his 2016 live album, Earth, into an ecological rallying cry -- he decided to record an entire album of outrage at the Orange One in 2017, roping in his new backing band, Promise of the Real, for support. The Visitor never disguises Young's disgust with the direction America is headed. Neil calls out Trump for destroying the things he holds dear and he peppers the album with twists on rallying cries from the 2016 election...  Young doesn't mold his melodies or thoughts into something grander than impulse, which is why The Visitor seems fascinating upon the first listen, but tiresome upon repeats. Neil is making music for the moment and he doesn't much care if it lasts beyond that day or not, and while living in the moment is a good way to get through life, it doesn't do much for albums.


A gritty and down-home 21st century blues-rock duo out of San Diego, California.  little hurricane formed in 2010 when guitarist and vocalist Anthony "Tone" Catalano answered a musician's call from drummer and vocalist Celeste "CC" Spina on craigslist. Catalano, originally from Santa Cruz, California, and Spina, originally from Chicago, Illinois, shared a common interest in both the blues and vintage musical equipment, and their ragged, passionate sound evolved almost instantly.

...Little Hurricane continue this progression on Same Sun Same Moon, stepping even further away from the repetitive lyrical traps they fell into on their first record – all while exploring new musical territory. Little Hurricane apply their blues and classic rock influences to music that is brave enough to explore sounds commonly heard in rock, pop and alternative music. Same Sun Same Moon is an interesting record with no simple label or category – and that’s a big reason for why it’s enjoyable to listen to.

The follow-up to 2014's dreamy post-folk gem Some Heavy Ocean, Marked for Death finds Emma Ruth Rundle both dancing with and exorcizing a slew of personal demons via a brooding blast of icy alt-rock and doomy sludge metal. A far heavier, both figuratively and literally, affair than her weighty debut, Marked for Death can hardly be described as a mood stabilizer, but Rundle is able to contrast that lyrical vulnerability with huge, empowering blasts of sonic might. Those moments are more often than not preceded by stark declarations of existential grief, most of which seem predicated by a recent breakup or loss of a loved one. Her fluid voice -- a beguiling amalgam of Chelsea Wolfe, Tori Amos, and PJ Harvey -- can go from broken to soaring to feral in a single measure, and when paired with her atmospheric guitar pyrotechnics, the effect renders much of the first-person fretting moot...


An Anglo-American duo that plays fiery garage rock with blues grit, new wave cool, and loads of feedback.  The bluesy punk duo the Kills consist of vocalist/guitarist VV, aka Alison Mosshart, formerly of the Florida punk band Discount, and drummer/guitarist/vocalist Hotel, aka Jamie Hince. After Discount ended in 2000, VV began exchanging tapes with the London-based Hotel through the mail, but both of them felt hindered by this method, so VV crossed the Atlantic so the duo could write faster. In spring of 2001, they issued a self-released demo that showcased their gritty, sexy sound and earned favorable reviews from such quarters as TapeOp Magazine.

The Kills experienced -- or should that be survived? -- an eventful five years between 2011's Blood Pressures and Ash & Ice. Alison Mosshart moved to Nashville and worked with the Dead Weather as well as on her career as a visual artist, while Jamie Hince split with wife Kate Moss and suffered an injury to his left hand that required him to learn how to play guitar again. The process of recovering from a broken hand and a broken heart is apparent on the duo's fifth album, the title of which suggests the remnants of a night out -- or a nuclear winter -- and also reflects the trip Hince took on the Trans-Siberian Express in the wake of these events. The results capture the isolation and exhaustion that follow a breakup with remarkable honesty. Instead of melodrama, Mosshart and Hince explore weariness and loss via the sounds that seemed so vibrant on their previous albums...
