The group features bassist Jonathan Bremer and keyboardist/tape delay artist Morten McCoy... It's an organic, spectral atmosphere, the kind that begs to be heard in surround sound or through headphones in one extended session. A highly adept singer and writer who possesses a resonant baritone and four-octave range, Kurt Elling has won a global fan base, numerous awards, and countless accolades for his distinctive brand of vocal jazz. A collaboration with guitarist Charlie Hunter, SuperBlue finds vocalist Kurt Elling exploring a sophisticated funk and soul sound. Hunter, who plays here and also produced the album, is primarily known for his fusion-informed jazz and adventurous, funk-influenced projects like Garage a Trois. However, he has also made significant contributions to albums by forward-thinking neo-soul and R&B artists, including D'Angelo and Frank Ocean. It's this deep grasp of those funky, groove-oriented vibes that he brings to his work with Elling on SuperBlue. Also contributing are Butcher Brown bandmates drummer Corey Fonville and bassist-keyboardist DJ Harrison, who bring their own hip-hop sensibilities to the proceedings... SuperBlue certainly straddles the line between electric jazz fusion and groove-based neo-soul, with a heavy leaning toward the latter. While there are some superb solo moments here from Hunter, not to mention dazzling sections of vocal gymnastics by Elling, the focus is less on post-bop improvisation and more on a song's overall vibe. For Elling and Hunter, the choice feels purposeful and right for the funky, organic nature of these songs. SuperBlue is an ebullient and creative production that further underlines Elling's dynamic and endlessly adaptable vocal skills, regardless of genre.

A deeply personal album for Schorr, Force of Nature is a hailstorm of an album sure to go down in blues history.

Specializing in a raw hillbilly punk-blues style that roars like a tweaking modal chain saw, Left Lane Cruiser is a band led by slide guitarist Frederick "Joe" Evans IV. Their music has the swampy feel of North Mississippi hill country blues à la Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside, with a good dose of snarling garage punk tossed into the mix. While the band would sometimes expand into a trio, they record the bulk of their work as a two-piece, and the tough, funky roar of their music arrives fully formed on their 2006 debut Gettin' Down on It...

2017's Claw Machine Wizard is Left Lane Cruiser's ninth album in ten years, and if you've been following their body of work, you should know what to expect before the first tune kicks in. Left Lane Cruiser are all about raw, dirty blues-rock, full of distorted guitars and pounding rhythms, and they aren't about to change their formula a decade into the game. But Claw Machine Wizard does sound just a bit less raunchy than their past few efforts, and contrary to expectations, that turns out to work in their favor. Don't worry, this album is still industrial-strength stomp-down blues-rock, but Jason Davis' engineering and mix add a bit more clarity to the group's attack, and the result boasts a bit less grime and a bit more groove, which helps these tunes shake long and hard... 

Also known as the Reverend Shawn Amos, Shawn Amos is a singer, songwriter, and producer with a style that alternates blues, roots rock, country, and gospel... After establishing himself as a solo artist, he also became known as a multi-faceted label and marketing executive, among other enterprises, while continuing to release music...

After the release of their 2017 album Death Express, Little Barrie suffered the tragic loss of drummer Virgil Howe, and the remaining two members of the group, guitarist Barrie Cadogan and bassist Lewis Wharton, took some time deciding whether they wanted to keep the band going. When they did choose to make more music together, they called in drummer Malcom Catto of the London jazz group Heliocentrics. The trio began jamming in the drummer's basement studio, liked what they came up with, and turned their ideas into a set of songs. Recorded simply on vintage equipment, the seven-song Quatermass Seven album crackles with energy and shines like a gritty diamond as the three players delve deeply into grooves so deep they feel bottomless... It's a heady mix of vintage sounds, just like the band usually put on tape, but a little freer and tougher thanks to Catto's jazz background, the urgency of Cadogan's singing and playing, and the sense that the emotional stakes are a little higher...

Circles Around the Sun is a contemporary instrumental rock band that formed with the specific purpose of creating intermission music for Fare Thee Well, a series of reunion concerts played by the surviving members of the Grateful Dead during their 2015 tour. Those shows celebrated the band's 50th anniversary and served as their official send-off, while Circles Around the Sun was designed to reflect the Dead's spacy and grooving overall feel...

By the end of the '90s, artists realized that CD and CD-R bootlegs of live performances were in high demand, which meant that they could profit by officially releasing certain "special" live performances. Portishead's one-night stand at New York City's Roseland Ballroom, released as PNYC, certainly qualifies as one of those "special" occasions. Performing with a 35-piece orchestra, Portishead runs through selections from its two albums, favoring its second slightly. On the surface, it doesn't seem like the orchestra would add much to the performances, especially since the arrangements remain similar, but its presence makes the music tense, dramatic, and breathtaking... 

Which means, of course, that PNYC is much more compelling and essential than the average live album.

Tindersticks were one of the most original and distinctive British acts of the '90s, standing apart from both the British indie scene and the rash of Brit-pop guitar combos that dominated the U.K. charts. Where their contemporaries were often direct and to the point, Tindersticks were obtuse and leisurely, crafting dense, difficult songs layered with literary lyrics, intertwining melodies, mumbling vocals, and gently melancholy orchestrations...

With a title like Simple Pleasure and songs like the disarmingly up-tempo opener "Can We Start Again?," at first listen Tindersticks' fourth proper album seems buoyed by a guarded optimism totally absent from previous outings; dig deeper, however, and it's all a come-on -- frontman Stuart Staples still inhabits a netherworld where nothing is ever simple, pleasure is an illusion, and starting again merely means making the same mistakes yet one more time. Nothing truly changes, which has been Tindersticks' point all along, of course -- hopes are still meant to be dashed and hearts still meant to be broken, and Simple Pleasure is neither the time nor the place to begin pretending otherwise. Staples' songs remain the very essence of romantic despair, stunning in their funereal beauty and devastating in their tormented desperation...

Like many a great band, Sleater-Kinney inhabited their time so thoroughly it took an extended hiatus to realize the extent of their legacy. In many respects, they were the defining American indie rock band of the second half of the '90s, the group that harnessed all the upheaval of the alt-rock explosion of the first part of the decade and channeled it into a vigorous mission statement. It was not incidental that Sleater-Kinney were an all-female band -- prior to S-K, co-leaders Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein both started playing music in Northern Pacific riot grrrl bands and their feminism and queercore roots were deeply embedded in their rock & roll...

Expectations for Sleater-Kinney's fourth album were stratospheric, with the raging, tuneful feminist catharsis of Call the Doctor and Dig Me Out having garnered near-universal critical raves and outlandish media hype. Afraid of falling into a predictable rut, though, the band bravely pushed its range of expression into more personal, subdued, and cerebral territory on The Hot Rock. That means the record isn't quite as immediately satisfying as its two brilliant predecessors, but it does reward those willing to spend time absorbing its nervy introspection and moodiness. Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein push relentlessly for more complex interplay, both in their vocal and instrumental work; even the gentlest songs might break into unexpected dissonance or take an angular, off-kilter melodic direction...

A Nulladik Változat egy 1989-ben alakult magyar alternatív, dark rock, illetve folk-rock együttes. A rendszerváltást követő underground zenei élet olyan szereplői mellett létezett és koncertezett különféle klubokban és fesztiválokon a zenekar, mint a The Perfect Name, a Vágtázó Halottkémek, a Sziámi, a Kispál és a Borz és a Pál Utcai Fiúk... A zenei stílust a zenekar indulásának időszakában jellemző alternatív, borongós – dark, illetve új hullámos – hangulat jellemezte, lassú és dinamikus dalok egyaránt megtalálhatók a zenekar repertoárjában. A Nulladik Változat zenéjére olyan zenekarok voltak hatással, mint a The Cure, a Joy Division és a U2. Fenes Tibor lírai, szerelemről, elidegenedésről, városi magányról szóló szövegei albumról albumra koherens érzésvilágot jelenítettek meg. Az 1990-es évek közepétől – Szuhaj Péter zenekarba kerülésével – a zenében helyenként közép-európai (magyar és balkáni) népzenei elemekkel bővültek, illetve kaptak nagyobb hangsúlyt, a dalszövegekben gyakorta ezoterikus, illetve spirituális elemek bukkantak fel. A Nulladik Változat több mint két és fél évtizedes fennállása óta, a kísérletezések – és a tagcserékkel is járó változások – révén mindvégig stílusában megújulni tudó, ugyanakkor elveiben egységes zenét játszik...

Játszottak az akkori népszerű F.O.S és a V.H.K., ef Zámbó Happy Dead Band előzenekaraként. Garamvölgyi Béla festőművész performansz ötletei után önállóan megtöltötték az andrássyi úti Fiatal Művészek Klubját és számos akkori művész klubot. Az alakulástól végigkíséri a zenekar életét a változás, mely mind a tagok személyében, mind a zenei repertoárban megfigyelhető. A Korai egy olyan audiovizuális élményvilágként aposztrofálható, melyhez az aktuális tagok és közreműködők saját ízlését, hangulatát adva egy folyamatosan megújuló, mégis a pszichedelika gyökereiből táplálkozó performansz születik...

Often referred to as the Devil’s Violinist, the Paganini of Voivodina, or a child prodigy, once he is on stage with an instrument – be it the violin or the zither – Lajkó is capable of doing anything, of guarding his audience to a world that opens up only to those born with a special talent. Félix Lajkó handles music rather impulsively. There is no need to define the style or genre of his music, since it is exactly about the opposite: transgressing styles, accepting the inexplicable.

The WMCE (World Music Charts Europe) has published its top 150 album of 2013 list. Out of 913 nominated records the new zither album of Félix Lajkó – was the leader both in August and September – called ’Field’ has ended up at the prominent 5th place!

Sally Nyolo is a Cameroonian artist who lives in Paris. Her music is inspired by the traditions of her home country. She plays bikutsi music among other genres and sometimes sings in endangered languages. She used to be a member of the group Zap Mama. She won the Radio France International World Music award in 1997, and since then her popularity has grown. She is one of the most famous singers from Cameroon.

Sally Nyolo's second Riverboat Records album is inspired by the moment before a tiger attacks - hushed in the long grass, senses alert, eyes wide, ears pricked, quiet purr, humming low. The title track 'Tiger Run' simmers with a musical mood akin to this idea: listen out for gently warping guitars, feather-light percussion and Sally's demure husky vocal. The tiger cat acts as a totem throughout Tiger Run, flexing its claws as the main source of inspiration. In conversation Sally Nyolo credits the animal for guiding her to compose music that strives toward a sense of power infused with lightness and agility...
