Alligator Records, Chicago's leading contemporary blues label, might never have been launched at all if not for the crashing, slashing slide guitar antics of Hound Dog Taylor. Bruce Iglauer, then an employee of Delmark Records, couldn't convince his boss, Bob Koester, of Taylor's potential, so Iglauer took matters into his own hands. In 1971, Alligator was born for the express purpose of releasing Hound Dog's debut album. We all know what transpired after that.

With Alligator label prexy Bruce Iglauer recording some 20 or 30 tracks over two nights everytime the band went into the studio, there were bound to be some really great tracks lurking in the vaults and these are it. Noteworthy for the great performance of Robert Johnson's "Crossroads," (previously only available as a Japanese 45) but also for the "rock & roll" inclusion of "What'd I Say" and Brewer Phillips' take on "Kansas City." No bottom of the barrel scrapings here.

It wasn't until the 1980 Victims of the Fury album, seven years into his solo career, that Robin Trower would employ former Procul Harum bandmate Keith Reid to provide lyrics (with Reid probably the only lyricist in history to get band status). Though this is officially a Robin Trower release entitled B.L.T., the marquee giving Jack Bruce and Bill Lordan equal heading above the double-sized name of Robin Trower, the project is shouldered by all talents involved and inhibited by a dreadful cover photo of a white bread sandwich: bacon, lettuce and tomato with -- if you look closely -- raw bacon. All concerned would have been better off titling this a Jack Bruce/Robin Trower project with drummer Bill Lordan...

A neo-beatnik songwriter who grew weirder and wilder in the '80s, earning a cult following that only grew larger as the years passed.  In the work of American songwriter Tom Waits, swampy blues, Beat poetry, West Coast jazz, Tin Pan Alley, country, 1930s-era cabaret, and post-Civil War parlor songs meet neon-lit carnival music, and the wheezing, clattering, experimental rhythms (often played by makeshift musical instruments from car radios to metal pipes and tin cans -- hence his love of Edgard Varese and Harry Partch) form a keenly individual musical universe.

Heartattack and Vine is Tom Waits' seventh and final album for Asylum. As such, it's transitional. As demonstrated by its immediate predecessors, 1978's excellent Blue Valentine and 1977's Foreign Affairs, he was already messing with off-kilter rhythms even in the most conventionally structured blues and jazz songs, with nastier-sounding guitars -- he plays a particularly gnarly style of rhythm on this entire album. Five of these nine tracks are rooted in gutbucket blues with rock edges and primal R&B beats. By this time, his singing voice had deteriorated to a gasping-for-breath whiskey-and-cigarettes growl that could make words indecipherable from one another, but his jazzman-inspired phrasing more than compensated... In sum, Heartattack and Vine reveals just how much Waits had grown during his tenure with Asylum. Though not perfect in sequencing -- the alternating juxtaposition of rowdy blues and heartworn ballads gets old -- almost every song stands on its own as a dusty gem.

A gritty and down-home 21st century blues-rock duo out of San Diego, California.  little hurricane formed in 2010 when guitarist and vocalist Anthony "Tone" Catalano answered a musician's call from drummer and vocalist Celeste "CC" Spina on craigslist. Catalano, originally from Santa Cruz, California, and Spina, originally from Chicago, Illinois, shared a common interest in both the blues and vintage musical equipment, and their ragged, passionate sound evolved almost instantly.

...Little Hurricane continue this progression on Same Sun Same Moon, stepping even further away from the repetitive lyrical traps they fell into on their first record – all while exploring new musical territory. Same Sun Same Moon is an interesting record with no simple label or category – and that’s a big reason for why it’s enjoyable to listen to.

The follow-up to 2014's dreamy post-folk gem Some Heavy Ocean, Marked for Death finds Emma Ruth Rundle both dancing with and exorcizing a slew of personal demons via a brooding blast of icy alt-rock and doomy sludge metal. A far heavier, both figuratively and literally, affair than her weighty debut, Marked for Death can hardly be described as a mood stabilizer, but Rundle is able to contrast that lyrical vulnerability with huge, empowering blasts of sonic might. Those moments are more often than not preceded by stark declarations of existential grief, most of which seem predicated by a recent breakup or loss of a loved one. Her fluid voice -- a beguiling amalgam of Chelsea Wolfe, Tori Amos, and PJ Harvey -- can go from broken to soaring to feral in a single measure, and when paired with her atmospheric guitar pyrotechnics, the effect renders much of the first-person fretting moot...

An Anglo-American duo that plays fiery garage rock with blues grit, new wave cool, and loads of feedback.  The bluesy punk duo the Kills consist of vocalist/guitarist VV, aka Alison Mosshart, formerly of the Florida punk band Discount, and drummer/guitarist/vocalist Hotel, aka Jamie Hince. After Discount ended in 2000, VV began exchanging tapes with the London-based Hotel through the mail, but both of them felt hindered by this method, so VV crossed the Atlantic so the duo could write faster. In spring of 2001, they issued a self-released demo that showcased their gritty, sexy sound and earned favorable reviews from such quarters as TapeOp Magazine.

The Kills experienced -- or should that be survived? -- an eventful five years between 2011's Blood Pressures and Ash & Ice. Alison Mosshart moved to Nashville and worked with the Dead Weather as well as on her career as a visual artist, while Jamie Hince split with wife Kate Moss and suffered an injury to his left hand that required him to learn how to play guitar again. The process of recovering from a broken hand and a broken heart is apparent on the duo's fifth album, the title of which suggests the remnants of a night out -- or a nuclear winter -- and also reflects the trip Hince took on the Trans-Siberian Express in the wake of these events. The results capture the isolation and exhaustion that follow a breakup with remarkable honesty. Instead of melodrama, Mosshart and Hince explore weariness and loss via the sounds that seemed so vibrant on their previous albums...

Boss Hog have always been a band content to work on a time-line that would puzzle most bands, perfectly willing to go five years between releases as they attended to their other projects. But 2017's Brood X arrives over 16 years after their last proper album, 2000's Whiteout, as Cristina Martinez sets aside her duties as a working mom and Jon Spencer takes some downtime from his Blues Explosion. If Boss Hog sound a bit different than they did at the dawn of the 21st century, that's to be expected, but Brood X (and the 2016 companion EP Brood Star) reveals that they've changed very little conceptually; their dirty mixture of punkified blues, raw funk, and stoned but committed show band swagger is a bit less swampy, but it will still make you feel good and greasy after a few spins...

Comedienne, iconic 1950s movie sex symbol, and appealing interpreter of flirtatious vocal ballads.  Although film actress and Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe has been the subject of a large number of albums, she rarely stepped into a recording studio to make a commercial recording and only appeared in five real movie musicals (with a few other musical performances in her straight films), making for a total record and soundtrack output of less than three dozen titles that are recycled endlessly along with bits of movie dialogue and radio and TV appearances on the frequent reissues.

A hugely influential and original blues musician in the early 1900s, often crossing over into jazz.  Blues guitar simply would not have developed in the manner that it did if not for the prolific brilliance of Lonnie Johnson. He was there to help define the instrument's future within the genre and the genre's future itself at the very beginning, his melodic conception so far advanced from most of his prewar peers as to inhabit a plane all his own. For more than 40 years, Johnson played blues, jazz, and ballads his way; he was a true blues originator whose influence hung heavy on a host of subsequent blues immortals.

...Ez most nagyon elektronikus, popos lemez lett, gitár szinte nincs is rajta, ami élőben is eléggé átalakítja a megszólalásunkat, de szerencsére Nagy István gitárosunk zongorán is nagyon jó. Jelentősen más irányba tolódtunk el, az előzőnél sokkal vidámabb az új album. „Legyen tánc!” – ez volt a mottónk. Boldogság és az alternatív hangulatból való kiszakadás jellemzi. Volt olyan lemezünk, ami lényegében teljesen élő volt, ez most nagyon elektronikus, Ambrus (Tövisházi Ambrus, a zenekar alapítótagja és producere – a szerk.) elképesztő munkájának, a megfelelő hangok megtalálásának és a stúdió-próbateremben töltött sokezer órának az eredménye. A dalok általában mindig ugyanúgy születnek, kettőnk között indulnak el, ebben nem volt most sem eltérés. Ambrus átküld egy zenei alapötletet és arra elkezdődik a szövegírás. Ezt általában én és Tariska Szabi indítjuk, de van, amikor már rögtön érezzük egy dallamon, hogy ezt Hujber Szabinak vagy Dévényi-Hajós Kristófnak küldjük el. Már érezzük, hogy ki mire harap. Ezúttal is volt olyan szám, amire három szöveg is született, végül az enyém lett a végleges, de Tariska Szabi arra írt szövege meg kapott egy másik zenét. Amikor a zene és a szöveg kezd összesimulni és szerelembe esnek, akkor ahhoz jönnek még további finomítások és úgy alakul ki a végeredmény. Többször a zenekar dúsítja fel ezeket, mindenki a maga ötleteivel. De alapvetően Ambrus szerzi a zenét és hangszerel...

...A magyar nyelv szokatlan a zenekartól és elsőre igen meghökkentő is. „Annak, hogy ez az első magyar nyelvű EP, az az egyik oka, hogy korábban nem tartottam magam érettnek a feladatra, hogy magyar dalszöveget írjak, mert nagyon könnyű magyarul giccsesen hangzani. Nekem dalban mindig jobban ment angolul az önkifejezés, de nagyon sok verset írtam már magyarul, egészen kicsi korom óta – jelent is meg pár – de amikor megénekeltem, valahogy sosem hangzott elfogadhatónak. Most jött az első olyan szám a Steril formájában, amire úgy gondoltam, hogy vállalható és megállja a helyét a magyar nyelvben”. – mondta el Árvai-Illés Emese.
A dalok kicsit talán lassabbak az előző lemezhez képest, de mind hangulatban, mind igényességben abszolút egy szinten vannak. Egy apró érdekesség – ami szerintem az EP csúcspontja -, a nyitó Fekete c. dalban Celine Righi brácsázik. A játéka gyönyörű, nagyon jó ötlet volt egy ilyen szép vonós hangszert beletenni, abszolút nyerő...

...A Realistic Crew egykori egyik fele, Kalotás Csaba ma már leginkább filmzenék (Viharsarok, Társas Játék, Paul Bowles: The Cage Door Is Always Open) szerzőjeként ismert, ám most megjelenik - egy Kamikaze Scotsmen-átdolgozással felvezetett - első saját, szerzői albuma is, ami valójában több, mint nagylemez. A K6is12 egy fotós-zenés-utazós projekt, 12 hónap fényképeken megörökített úton levésének 12 tételes, instrumentális, gyönyörű zenei lenyomata. Kalotás Csaba éppen egy éve kezdett bele ebbe a K6is12-be, ahogy mondja: „egy éve pont ezen a napon kezdtem el ezt a projektet. Aznap lett meg a jogosítványom. Aztán 45000 kilométert utaztam, autóval, gyalog, repülőgépen. Ennek az összesítése ez a tizenkét zene és a tizenkét epizódra osztott képek.”...

Tania Saleh is a Lebanese singer/songwriter who has been paving her own path in the Arabic underground musical scene since 1990. Her voice is wise and true, a soft mix between the traditional Arabic music she was raised on and the western sounds she chose to follow. She writes about the daily worries of a troubled society, of love and hate and what’s in between. Her music follows the rhythm of her daily life and mirrors her changing mood, creating a boiling pot of tunes, feelings and love for innovation.

Axel Krygier is a musician and composer from Buenos Aires (Argentina). His music does not bear any simple definition, it is rather a fusion between the characteristic sounds of South America (cumbia, tango), European folk melodies (Klezmer, Balcan) with groove, dub, psychedelia, twist and countless styles, as Axel Krygier's sounds are a constant surprise.

Inspired by the French prehistoric documentary Lascaux: Le Ciel des Premiers Hommes, Argentine maverick composer/musician Krygier’s fifth album is his first concept work. He uses a dizzying array of musical genres to tell his tale of Big Foot’s journey from the Stone Age to the Information Age. Though the vocals are in Spanish, anyone can enjoy the musical delights to be found here. Among genres one encounters on this journey are B movie lounge music (on the title track), disco, rockabilly, and he even pays homage to Italian maestro Ennio Morricone with a spaghetti-western theme. And that’s just the tip of the musical iceberg on this world-music cornucopia. With his deft ability to morph from one style to another between tracks, it’s easy to see that Krygier’s résumé includes music for films, plays and dance performances...

During Chick Corea's freelance period after Return to Forever broke up and before he formed his Elektric Band, the pianist collaborated with many of his favorite musicians. This two-LP set contains eight duets with vibraphonist Gary Burton (highlighted by "Senor Mouse," "Bud Powell" and a remake of "Crystal Silence") along with one solo performance apiece by the two masterful musicians. The music is often introspective, but there are some exciting moments.

Premier percussionist and drummer often considered the finest modern jazz drummer of the '70s after Elvin Jones and Tony Williams.  At his best, Jack DeJohnette is one of the most consistently inventive jazz percussionists extant. His style is wide-ranging, and while capable of playing convincingly in any modern idiom, he always maintains a well-defined voice. DeJohnette has a remarkably fluid relationship to pulse. His timing is excellent; even as he pushes, pulls, and generally obscures the beat beyond recognition, a powerful sense of swing is ever-present. His tonal palette is huge as well: No drummer pays closer attention to the sounds that come out of his kit than DeJohnette. He possesses a comprehensive musicality rare among jazz drummers.
