Doyle Bramhall II put his solo recording career into hibernation following the 2001 release of Welcome, choosing to concentrate on his thriving career as a sideman and producer...  Bramhall channels all this experience into Rich Man, his first album in 17 years and also his best. The key to the success of Rich Man is how he loads up the album with thick, funky rhythms, pushing soul over blues over the course of its 13 tracks... By closing the album with a slow, churning rendition of "Hear My Train a Comin'," he consciously reconnects with blues-rock, but early in the record he's riding mellower Southern soul grooves and concentrating on tight songwriting. And that's the trick of the album: it starts expansive and keeps expanding, taking in all the sounds and styles he's played over the last 17 years.

Cedric O. Burnside is an American electric blues drummer, guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is the son of blues drummer Calvin Jackson[3] and grandson of blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist R. L. Burnside. Amongst many others, Burnside has played drums, either live or on record, with R. L. Burnside, Jessie Mae Hemphill, John Hermann, Kenny Brown, Richard Johnston, Jimmy Buffett, T-Model Ford, Paul "Wine" Jones, Widespread Panic, Afrissippi, and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.

It's always an event when a new Cedric Burnside album is released, for many different reasons. First and foremost, to remind us all of the huge contribution that the Mississippi Hill Country sound has given, in the last half a century and beyond, to the fundamentals of Blues in its entirety, through artists like R.L. Burnside, Mississippi Fred McDowell or Junior Kimbrough, for example.
Another good reason is that Cedric Burnside is one of the very few artists left in the world capable to recreate perfectly the Hill Country sound and atmospheres, thanks to his instinctive, inner ability to adapt the mood and the vibes of the Hill Country Blues to his personal tales about life, loss, fears and hopes.
Living temporarily aside the Cedric Burnside Project, the Mississippi Award-winning multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter has decided to go solo on his brand new album, called Benton County Relic, a record where Burnside digs even deeper than he has ever done on past records, from a lyrical perspective, into events that impacted his personal life in the last couple of years. Events that the American artist has been able to translate, lyrically and sonically, through twelve brand new songs of an impressive depth of intensity and raw honesty, two aspects that have always been at the core of Burnside's musical vision.

Billy Branch earned the throne of king of Chicago Blues harp during the last quarter of the 20th Century, then held it during the first decades of the new millennium. One of the keys to his enduring success is how he didn't merely keep traditions alive, he made sure to blend in elements of funk and soul into Chicago blues, a trick that brought new audiences into the fold while helping the music breathe. In this light, the 2019 album Roots And Branches: The Songs Of Little Walter-recorded with the Sons Of Blues, as nearly all of his albums are-doesn't seem quite so obvious as it might initially appear. Little Walter's influence on Chicago blues in general and harmonicaists in particular is immense, so a tribute album doesn't seem necessarily necessary, yet Branch knows that traditions are kept alive through revivals....

Hendrix-influenced guitarist who started recording while still a teenager. Blues guitar phenom Eric Gales was born and raised in Memphis, learning to play at age four from older brothers Eugene and Manuel in imitation of their upside-down, left-handed style (a tradition actually passed down from their grandfather, Dempsey Garrett, Sr., who was known to jam with the likes of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf).

Usually when a band goes from a quartet to a trio, that means their sound has thinned out just a bit. That's hardly the case with 2018's Everything's Gonna Be Alright, the second album for Alive Naturalsound Records from blues-rock combo Handsome Jack. With the departure of guitarist Phil Allport, lead singer and guitarist Jamison Passuite is now handling all the six-string chores for the group, accompanied by drummer Bennie Hayes (replacing previous timekeeper Chad Salmeri) and bassist Joe Verdonselli. However, while Handsome Jack's 2014 effort Do What Comes Naturally sounded loose but potent, with a clean and naturalistic vibe, Everything's Gonna Be Alright seems a bit more tricked up. These sessions find Passuite pushing the bluesy honk of his vocals a lot harder and the rhythm section adds a funkier undercurrent to the rhythms, and if the guitar work is more spartan, it's more decisive and pushed up higher in the mix...

Fabrizio Poggi is a singer and harmonica player Grammy Awards nominee who has received the Hohner Lifetime Award, and has been two times Blues Music Awards nominee, Jimi Awards nominee, and during his long career has recorded twenty two albums. He has performed in the US and Europe with The Blind Boys of Alabama, Garth Hudson of The Band, Steve Cropper, Charlie Musselwhite, Ronnie Earl, John P. Hammond, Marcia Ball, Guy Davis, Eric Bibb, Flaco Jimenez, Little Feat and many others.

Despite its hardscrabble title -- a sentiment mirrored by the deeply etched black & white cover art -- 2016's Blues of Desperation is very much a continuation of the bright, varied blues-rock heard on Different Shades of Blue. On that 2014 album, Joe Bonamassa made a conscious decision to pair with a bunch of Nashville songsmiths to help sharpen his original material, and he brings most of them back for Blues of Desperation, too. The tenor of the tunes is somewhat heavy -- there are lonesome trains, low valleys, no places for the lonely -- and the production also carries a ballast, something that comes into sharp relief on the Zep-flavored title track but can be heard throughout the record...

Multi-talented Kevin Selfe and his band, the Tornadoes, have been wowing audiences from their adopted home base of Portland, Ore., for the better part of a decade, but should make waves nationally with Buy My Soul Back, a thoroughly modern album that delves into themes that regularly run through the blues.
Originally from Roanoke, Va., Selfe discovered the blues late in life, when he was a student in meteorology at North Carolina State University. His roommate, a bass player, introduced him to the works of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Elmore James, and, by the time he graduated with honors, changed his path in life from TV weatherman to dyed-in-the-wool bluesman.

San Antonio-born, Austin-based guitarist, singer, and songwriter who specializes in fiery Texas blues rock. Austin-based guitarist, songwriter, and singer Chris Duarte has often been compared with the late Stevie Ray Vaughan. It's heady stuff for the musician, who plays a rhythmic style of Texas blues-rock that is at times reminiscent of Vaughan's sound, and at other times reminiscent of Johnny Winter. The truth is, Duarte has his own sound that draws on elements of jazz, blues, and rock & roll.

Earlier in his career, Chris Duarte was often compared to fellow Texas guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Johnny Winter's name was tossed around as well, but Duarte has been at this professional blues-rock thing for a couple of decades now, and while he quite likely will never escape the Vaughan/Winter cul du sac, it's obvious at this point that he has his own varied spin on the whole modern Texas blues thing, spicing it up with, at times, a jazz feel and some light psychedelia. He doesn't wander far from that mix on Lucky 13, which he co-produced with Mike Varney, and for which Duarte wrote all the songs. Working with drummer John McKnight and bassist Kevin Vecchione, Duarte stays close to the power trio template, spinning off fiery guitar lines everywhere and, particularly when he gets a bit of that Jimi Hendrix vibe going, sounding like he's stepping right out of the late '60s...
